I (vaguely) remember the blowback being more about how crummily the faction was implemented as opposed to the principle of it being the big bad. Though saying that I can see why it'd be worth complaining about.

Store page dropped some pretty obvious hints at Nagash but I again doubt they'd just put the big bad as a pre-order thing.

I would say that it's unlikely that the store page would hint at the Preorder like that. My bet is that this is referring to the mysterious ninth lord in the game. My money would be on Belakor actually. He fits perfectly as the leader of a Chaos Undivided army, is constantly trying to get more power, and is stated to be older than the Elves.

Wasn't the big bad of WH1 (chaos invasion / warriors) the pre-order bonus for it?

(That said I don't really know enough about Belakor or Nagash to have an opinion on the matter.)

A lot of prisons these days are basically company towns dialed up to 111, true.

Considering how much we seem to be drifting back into robber-baron days, not too surprised to see the company town make a return.

Ah, couldn't recall which one that was.

There are actually several (at least). Brief kerfuffle last week when Andy Harris of MD accidentally left his concealed-carry on his person and set off the detector, then tried to pawn the gun off on a colleague. (He later blamed staff for not reminding him he was carrying, which is. Yeah.)

Schumer and McConnell reached an agreement to delay the trial itself until the 8th (i.e. next week), partly to give Trump's team time to figure out a defense, and partly to give the Senate time to confirm more cabinet positions before getting stuck in the trial for a while.

As to the $2k thing, is the objection about the amount of money or the timing?

For the former, the $2k was a discussion before the $600 agreement was reached so I don't think it's completely out there to be talking the additional $1400 now. (That said, I do think once the December bill was reached they should have changed their talking points / framing.)

For the latter, they really doing it pretty much as fast as they can - remember that the Senate didn't technically flip until the 21st of January, crafting the reconciliation format needed to do filibuster-free votes requires jumping through hoops that takes some time, and that they don't have the votes to nuke the filibuster. At this point it'll likely be another several weeks (late February or March) before they can get the reconciliation bill fully passed. Reconciliation is an awkward process.

(Though yes, they were a mixture of naive, lying, and/or 'truthinessing' to say it'd happen immediately. It could if there was R support, but that's a pipe dream.)

Bro don't get political
1 drink later
'Henry, we've got to nuke them,'

From the memoirs/biographies I've read Nixon doing drunk orders/demands was not uncommon. Usually in the middle of the night, too. Eventually became just choosing not to hear various orders.

Only nuked two inhabited cities so far!

wait shit

I think that predated the modern system, but also that was partly the heady days of a new toy (never mind a world-destroying one).

Honestly, two nukes over the last 70 years isn't too bad a record. (Knock on wood.)

Edit: and per the expiration note, that's an active topic in US military discussions. Obama was relatively pro-'modernization' despite his other positions.

I'd pipe in, but MSH covered it thoroughly (including the 00000000  password for quite a while).

As far as we know while on paper it's a somewhat distressing setup, in practice it doesn't seem too bad?

How quick the tune changed. I thought they’d wait at least a few months before going “nah, Trump didn't encourage the assault on the center of government.”

Only took McCarthy a few days on that one, then he moved to 'Aren't we all responsible, really?'

Back to more 'normal' Ameripol topics, House minority leader McCarthy made the pilgrimage to Mar-a-lago today to kiss the ring of Trump, pose for a picture together, and together issue statements about how Trump and Republicans will save America from the Democrats. To quote Rep. McCarthy:

Quote
Today, President Trump committed to helping elect Republicans in the House and Senate in 2022. A Republican majority will listen to our fellow Americans and solve the challenges facing our nation. Democrats, on the other hand, have only put forward an agenda that divides us — such as impeaching a President who is now a private citizen and destroying blue-collar energy jobs. For the sake of our country, the radical Democrat agenda must be stopped.

And, to quote Trump:

Quote
They discussed many topics, number one of which was taking back the House in 2022. President Trump’s popularity has never been stronger than it is today, and his endorsement means more than perhaps any endorsement at any time.

President Trump has agreed to work with Leader McCarthy on helping the Republican Party to become a majority in the House. They worked very well together in the last election and picked up at least 15 seats when most predicted it would be the opposite. They will do so again, and the work has already started.

So we had... about three weeks since the 6th, or just one week after inauguration, for things to return to 'normal'.

(And, on beers, the big names aren't great but there's a great diversity of options and smaller brewers - and plenty of foreign brews available too. Kind of like a microcosm for America, complete with most of the big-name brands actually being owned by a handful of multinational titans.)

So it seems like they will push ahead with the Olympics in Tokyo/July come hell or high water.

A critic of the plan commented
Quote
"Basically the IOC and [the Tokyo organisers] are now doing a Donald Trump and ignoring reality.”

I vaguely recall Japan acting just like this last year until they abruptly changed position. Issue this time is that if they delay another year it puts them alongside the winter games.

Culturally speaking, among older Japanese at least the 1964 summer games (the last time they hosted summer) are a really big deal and were a huge investment in the country - they had been similarly preparing for the 2020 games, so they likely feel hugely invested in this for good or ill.

Not that I'm arguing Biden actually can/will fix these issues, but it's not like the government can turn on a dime. He has put some more pro-labor people in significant positions (including at the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, the gatekeeper of all regulations that traditionally has only been a friend to corporate under Dem and Repub alike), but actually changing regulations takes time, which in turn takes time to yield corporations/groups changing their behaviors.

A large portion of the EOs already signed are changing overall stances or beginning review of prior (or new) actions - only in limited conditions can EOs directly & immediately affect the real world.

In other news, Pelosi will be sending over the article of impeachment on Monday, which I believe means the trial starts on Tuesday.
