Use DF Companion so you can have Dwarves vs. Goblins/Elves CTF matches.

You're going to drain an entire river just to get a few bolts of cloth and a bin? :|
That isn't a good enough reason?

^^^^ This is why dwarven children aren't engravers.

I would approve of this but I think that we shouldn't have immigrants or dwarven children. If you want more dwarves you should carve them out of the very rock they mine. They are children of stone, not of flesh.

DF Modding / Re: Tile editing question
« on: May 18, 2008, 03:41:00 pm »
I have a question about tile edit as well:

If I make an underground pocket of water marked as subterranean will I be able to spawn tower-caps? I have a fortress on a glacier and I've run out of logs and the caravan doesn't seem to want to bring me more than 6 or 7 each year (no access to elves and humans) and would like to setup a tree farm but care of being on a glacier I have no underground water sources. At the rate things are going it's gonna be a long time before I have beds for all of my dwarves, and sleeping on ice is not something they seem to be keen on.

GFPS or FPS? I don't care if the GFPS drops to nothing, but when the FPS drops to 30 or lower and it takes 10 minutes for a dwarf to walk down a hallway it's just painful.

Those damned legendary goblin archers get me every time. I usually build a tower for my marksdwarves but they quickly become towers of carnage filled with dwarven offal. Followed soon after with a fortress of dead dwarves.

Also FPS. when it drops below 30, I just give up.

On that, I've built a cistern as follows:

code:

# - wall (rock, this is all several layers under the ice)
_ - floor
 - channel
+ - door
x - zoned designated as a dump
7 - magma/lava

bottom
#######
###7###

middle (cistern)
#######
##___##
_+___##
##___##
#######

top (water dump)
#######
##___##
_+_ x##
##___##
#######

Now, as you see I have a dump right next to a hole, which makes my dwarves toss things down into my cistern, on a glacial fortress this means ice ("water"). While this is a much more simplified version of what I built, this is pretty close to how it actually is. Anyways, I figured that dumping ice rocks down into my cistern, which with the hole placement means the rocks end up 1 level above the magma, would end up following the classic "ice 1 level above magma melts and turns into water" bit, but instead the ice just disappears after awhile (as if it sublimates) and I am left with an empty cistern. It seems like it should work, but instead it doesn't and I am left with an empty cistern and many of my military dwarves dying of thirst when they have only minor wounds. I guess I should have just built magma-resistant pumps and done things that way, but I was sure this was going to work. It seems like the only way to make water on a glacial map is to pump the magma up to 1 layer below the ice layers and melt it that way.

Yeah, anything else is fine but I seem incapable of finding rock crystal so whenever a noble requests something with crystal glass I load up companion and set them up to get butchered into dwarf meat. Nothing like a superior roast made out of that damn Baron who made unreasonable requests and set stupid mandates.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Water Pumps and Artefacts
« on: May 18, 2008, 11:02:00 am »
Moods and artifact creation as a result of them is completely random. I just had a carpenter go fey on me and build my first artifact bed ever, usually I end up with crafts, or veils, or various other useless things that just sit in my stockpile waiting to get traded away, it's a matter of chance and time.

That said, you can always get DF Companion and force strange moods upon your dwarves, but what they produce is still completely random.

As for hooking up multiple screw pumps together that is something I still haven't gotten to work right and as far as I can tell distance does not affect power.

The elven caravans are always target practice for my ballistae; the diplomat, when he dares show his pointed ears inside my fortress, becomes my personal pincushion. It is the only way to deal with such an unreasonable people.

Back in the coffin? They're in my refuse stockpile now. Had to forbid them before they got turned into a Dwarf Skull Totem and Dwarf Bone Bolts.

E: Nevermind, after I reclaimed them some nice dwarf who wasn't fixing on making bone bolts did walk them all the way back to their coffin.
