http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/10/amish_mob_broke_into_homes_and_cut_off_hair_and_be.php?ref=fpblg

This has to be one of the oddest stories I stumbled upon.

Five Amish men are being charged with aggravated burglary and kidnapping for breaking into other people's homes and giving them a hair cut. Even better, the name of their family? Mullet. The bail for their release is set at 50,000 dollars.

Who says nothing happens in Ohio?

So, decided to get back to programming so I have something other than my internship on my hands to deal with, and since I'd prefer a career in some sort of applied computer science. Still, I never found following tutorials to be very intuitive to learning something. So I had a little thought...

Why not work on whatever it is I feel I need more practice in, and post what I did over here? I mean, when has depending on the charity of strangers online ever been a bad thing? I can screw up, people can point what I did wrong, and I can learn and move on.

Slight heads up though, I'm not exactly known for sticking to anything, so this might die out tomorrow, or the day after, or something, but at least I'm doing something.

Anyway, here's the first bit of python scripting I've done:

Anyway, that's what I have for now, since I'm still learning the ropes of python. I'd still want to tackle input and output for a while, but I'll also be going over control statements quickly, then move onto classes and such.

Got a comment? Want to ask a question? Go ahead post. I might not be able to answer it, but I'm sure someone else here can.

Life Advice / Laptop speakers are incredibly quiet
« on: September 18, 2011, 07:00:07 am »
So I've been kinda struggling with this on and off. Every once in a while, I like to take my headset off to let my ears breathe, but then my laptop sounds like this. Even at 100% volume, that's much too quiet to hear anything other than ambient sound at best. I've turned on loudness equalization, but it seems to make it about this loud. Clearly not enough.

Is there any way to up the sound that comes out of these speakers? This is kinda silly.
I'm using Realtek audio drivers, if that helps.

Life Advice / Having two OSes on a computer
« on: July 21, 2011, 05:06:23 am »
Okay, so, I was thinking of installing linux onto one of my laptops, but want it to have windows 7 still on. I know it's possible to pull off having them both on there, but I wonder if there is anything I ought to know before I install ubuntu, something a newby to this prolly doesn't know.

Currently trying to partition the disk.

Since the sad thread has been discussing this, I figured it might as well have a topic. Not going to drag the entire argument so far here, but people more or less started listing off what each person did when it came to discoveries.

Life Advice / Notepad++ and libtcod
« on: March 13, 2011, 04:48:07 am »
I'm trying to follow this Rogue Basin tutorial on libtcod, and I keep getting the error that's described and fixed here:

So, here's my problem, I know that fixes the problem, but I have no idea what it's trying to tell me, most of this goes over my head. I understand those are meant to be batch files, but I really have no idea how to set those up, and, well, anything to do with batch files. I'd really rather have nothing to do with batch files, so don't expect me to google it, I just want to know if I have to stick those commands in a file and... well, do something with it.

Other Games / Anya's Minecraft server (USA-Canada)
« on: March 06, 2011, 12:44:12 am »
Me and anya have decided to run another minecraft server. This one is going to use both Hamatchi and a Whitelist, Hamatchi mostly since anya has trouble forwarding ports, but it might work well as a second layer of security. The server itself is low population, and fairly empty at the moment, so there is plenty of space to build right now.

The server is vanilla, and as far as any special features we plan on having is a goods exchange you might be able to do with the mods. Where you could exchange objects for objects, although we still need to iron things out. I'll post going rates when we decide on that.

Server rules are as follows:

-No griefing, this includes, setting buildings on fire and killing or hurting other players without provocation. We might later build an arena to have people duke it out, but for the time being, try not to do that.

-No cheating: This includes any methods of getting yourself items you haven't worked for.

Note: we'll add to the rules as we feel fit, but they'll be more geared so that everyone can enjoy themselves.

In order to join in, PM either me or anya, and we'll let you know the hamatchi information and whitelist you as soon as possible. Feed back is appreciated.

General Discussion / Superhero beats up car hijacker.
« on: January 06, 2011, 04:01:33 am »
I really don't know what to say: http://www.kirotv.com/news/26363364/detail.html

Yes, he runs around, beating up criminals, and even has a tazer stick. This is just, odd. And kinda awesome. And his secret base is a comic book store.

Edit: hold on there's more of them: http://www.seattlepi.com/local/430430_super19.html
And yeah, he didn't beat up the car hijacker. Just realized that.

Well, as long as it's in Europe, North America, Asia or Australia.

A fairly cool website nonetheless.

Life Advice / Which python is the best to learn?
« on: July 17, 2010, 02:45:59 am »
I have some basic experience in C++, and I want to learn python.

At this point though, there are two versions of it 2.7 and 3.1.2. I want to know which would be the best to learn, as well as why, keeping in mind that at some point I'd like to create a videogame using python.

General Discussion / Westboro Batist church pickets comic-con.
« on: July 16, 2010, 01:10:15 pm »
http://nerdbastards.com/2010/07/12/westboro-baptist-to-protest-at-comic-con/

Yup, the same guys that picket soldier's funerals, and the same guys that hold signs that say "God Hates [Homophobic slur]" are picketing comic-con. Why? Because reading Batman and Superman is idolatry, and will lead to the demise of the US.

Lastly, a quote from the Church leader:
Quote
The destruction of this nation is imminent – so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry.

Thoughts on this? I personally think that Fred Phelps is admitting that Batman and Superman are Gods.

General Discussion / Positive reinforcment, non-reinforcement and people.
« on: February 25, 2010, 01:28:21 pm »
First off, anyone that knows anything about training animals knows what this is about. Positive reinforcement is encouraging good behavior through rewards, and reward associated behavior. Dolphin trainers feed them fish, monkey trainers give bananas and so on.

Non-reinforcement is when the animal does something wrong, no reward or indication of reward is given. Monkey screws up, no banana, simple as that.

So here we go: does anyone think that this is a good idea to treat people this way? What about children? Anyone knows any stories?

I know for a fact that dolphins sometimes give their trainers a non-reinforcement treatment from time to time.

Life Advice / Pest control: ants.
« on: December 20, 2009, 01:07:51 pm »
Because of an accident I had months ago, involving gravity, soda and a severe defeciency in common sense as well as dark corners, my desk is now infested with ants. They suddenly popped up today, and I want to get rid of them, preferebly without using poison and fire (hey, this is my desk, the place where I spend most of my day).

Would getting rid of the source of sugar stop them from bothering me?
