Other Games / Re: Atom Zombie Smasher

The game is cheap, and awesome... It's on steam now too.

I'd recommend playing a round or two, then going into the modding section.  Modding is really just jiggering with the init file for damage levels and stuff.  I toned the scores way down, upped the size and number of everything (cities, troops, civs, zed, building HP).  It's kinda easy now, but it's a lot of fun to barricade off a city and shell zombies.

It's easily worth the price of the demo

DF Suggestions / Re: Reuse dwarves from abandoned fortresses
« on: March 13, 2011, 08:02:59 am »
i think toady mentioned doing something like retiring as overseer of a fortress and starting afresh.

i think that while !!fun!! is fun and all at a certain point your just that awesome that to start a new fortress you have to kill the old one off which is indeed kinda bullshit. though the idea of the King moving to every new successful outpost you make is really derp-derp so the option to retire should be at Duke.

Or just rethink why and when the king shows up in forts in general...  It's easy for a human to make a better fort than the RNG, now, but that might change.  Also, rather than competing with the RNG for possession of the king, you'd be competed with your last fort.

Well there was most likely a law against the use of crossbows in wars between christians. As wikipedia puts it:

Quote
Can. 29 of the Second Lateran Council under Pope Innocent II in 1139 may have banned the use of crossbows against Christians.[59] The authenticity, interpretation and translation of this source is contested.

You mean the church(filled with the second sons of nobles) said that the weapon a peasant could use to kill a noble shouldn't be used in battles where Christian nobles could be killed?

Also useful for finding dwarves in a field of camouflage.

Awesome

A paddle boat would need steam to ram with real force.

I know that the original naval rams used long oars, and the switch from oars to sails was a big reason they stopped being used.  For a real low riding boat, oars are hard to imagine, but foot power should be able to produce an equivalent amount of power.   That said, the first submarine used oars, so oars aren't unimaginable.  That's 1600 something, so well out of the date range, but notice that the technical hurdle was air purity, something that dwarves have no small amount of extra experience with.

How is using a 'D&D writer' as a source for inspiration worse than the myths that are already being used?

Besides, I thought I was pretty clear:  There's some doubts about how/whether to use dwarves on water, here's somebody who did it, take a look at their ideas, see if it sparks something.

Every outdoors cat I've ever known has gone after anything smaller than itself, including roaches, birds, and lizards.

Look up what a powrie is; it is cooler and more dwarfy that way.
Toady doesn't copy.

I'm well aware of what a powrie 'is', in the myth sense.  What does that have to do with paddle U-boats?

DF Suggestions / R.A. Salvatore's Powries as seafaring Dwarves/Goblins
« on: March 12, 2011, 10:19:04 pm »
Powries are really more of a goblin race, but in the DemonWars world, they take the place of Dwarves.

They are a primarily seafaring race, they use 'barrelboats', which are basically paddle(footpower) driven u-boats with ramming prows.

(They've also got the red cap stuff going for them, but that's neither here nor there.)

Not necessarily the way it SHOULD be, but it's a neat source to mine if you're looking for an excuse to have dwarven seafarers.  (Or if you want a flavor for goblins)

Srsly Thanks!

tadhydras sound awesome, especially with the ability to use the growth system to make them actually different shapes  (multiheaded snakes?  Medusi?  a big ball of heads?)

Don't you think making them hall a load of siltstone back to their treehouse, Jack and the Beanstalk style, is punishment enough?  Except this time, there is no beanstalk... The elves just got rock.

and you can turn off all their civilian labors or keep them always active, if you want.
