Other Games / Re: The Movies
« on: July 21, 2010, 11:21:54 pm »
Started playing today, it's quite enjoyable! The tutorial is adequate to get you started and leaves you alone after a while, by which time you're probably ready to find out the rest yourself. I like researching things to unlock new technologies and costumes. It starts getting a bit overwhelming when all of your stars demand a trailer, entourage AND need to spend time socialising, de-stressing, rehearsing and making movies, while the timeline ticks ever onward. The pace is a bit demanding for someone like me, who enjoys taking their time and watching things happen.

After 15 in-game years, I won my first award for Most Prestigious Lot. :) But I seem to be perpetually behind all the other studios in every other category. It seems impossible to catch up to their ratings, which makes me feel rushed into constructing/destroying buildings and constantly improving things. And while I'm doing that, my stars are slowly losing relationship points, complaining about their image, or demanding better trailers...

Overall, I'm enjoying it. But I hope there's some way to wind down the difficulty. It's not a hard game by any means, but I'm finding it difficult to keep up!

Going purely from 15+ year old memories, but I enjoyed the Mission Impossible games quite a lot.

There's very few games I actually remember from back then. Right now I can only recall MI and Dizzy. There was also an olympics track & field game whose full name escapes me, but that was some fun button-mashing. :)

Problem: I installed, but when I try to run it it tells me to put Disk One in. Disk One is in.

Grab a replacement exe from gamecopyworld, that's what I usually do in that situation.

Just out of curiosity, but is this inspired by Jef's recent Let's Play? :) I've been watching that too.

For some reason I completely passed up this game when it was released. I got it in my head, somehow, bizzarrely, that it was a Sims knockoff. I seriously thought it was a Maxis game. All I had ever seen of it were the actual movies you produce; none of the business sim side of the game, which is a genre I absolutely love. I thought The Movies was basically like the dressing room/char creation part of a Sims game, and nothing else. And so I've been completely ignoring it all these years.

Suddenly I see these little Youtube thumbnails of a new strategy-type LP and I'm thinking, "Hey, that game looks pretty neat!" ...and it turns out to be The Movies. A Lionhead game. Not Maxis; Lionhead. Not The Sims. :| ...What have I been missing?!

At this point, Jef can't get much more awesome for waking me up to all these great games. I can't wait to try this one out now.

Good luck getting yours working, Spartan.

One of my favourite games. It started to have a budding mod community too, but unfortunately the mod support was lackluster and it never really took off until well after the company's demise.

I'm calling this one a flop right now. I can't wait to see the train wreck that will be Darkspore.

This is already looking like one for the "not even worth torrenting" pile.

General Discussion / Boy cancels Fish: Attacked by Carp Marksman
« on: July 16, 2010, 10:24:55 am »
You thought DF Carp were deadly? Phah! They don't even use projectiles.

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3054085/Teen-speared-in-chest-by-float.html

FTA:
Quote

"TEENAGE angler Tom Mitchenall is lucky to be alive after he was speared in the chest — by his own FISHING FLOAT.

Tom, 17, had hooked a large carp and was jostling with the heavy fish when the line snapped sending the slender plastic float "twanging" back at him like an arrow.

Incredibly, the 8in-long plastic dart pierced Tom's chest and embedded itself in his lung which collapsed.

The riverbank "missile" missed his main artery by just an inch. Had it been cut he would have bled to death.

But Tom was rushed to hospital where surgeons removed the float from his chest and drained the fluid on his lung."

@Blacken: Thanks for that huge post! That's exactly the sort of information I'm looking for. A couple of very helpful tips I'll be sure to remember, too. Have you ever considered being a salesman? :P

@forsaken: I doubt I could provide a satisfactory answer to your question, but I appreciate you taking time out of your day to post here, regardless of your disinterest in the topic. :)

Let me tell you how I got convinced to Windows 7:

There was a pretty old game (Win98 era) that I couldn't run on Xp even with compatibility modes, but it perfectly runs on my Laptop wich has Win7 on it.

So I would say, go for it, you don't have much to lose with it.

Lol, that's the first I've heard of that happening. :)

@Sean: I've encountered the "Win XP Virtual PC" thing before. Would you say it runs reliably enough for me to forgo partitioning my disk for a seperate XP install?

Have you considered linux? I installed ubuntu three days ago in my netbook, and have been pleasantly surprised.

I understand the merits of Linux systems, but they aren't really for me. I prefer to stick to what's familiar. Learning a whole new way of doing things (even if it might be better in some aspects) is a bother. ;)

Another reason (besides the RAM upgrade) that I've been tempted by, is DirectX. I've been stuck with 9 for a while now and I heard about version 10 when it was first released, how games looked prettier and ran better. I feel like I'm missing out, especially since I have a PhysX enabled GPU and it's probably never being fully utilised.

Then again, I don't play THAT many modern games... no FPSers, at least. Motion sickness limits my range somewhat. :P

Life Advice / Convince me to upgrade to Win 7...
« on: July 07, 2010, 03:55:21 am »
I've clung to Windows XP for the longest time out of fear that many obscure or older games/applications would no longer function under a modern, 64-bit OS. But XP's life is drawing to a close, and we all eventually have to move with the times, right?

I recently upgraded my desktop to 4GB RAM, as an incentive to finally make the plunge, but I'm still not quite finding the motivation. The family PC has Vista, and my god, I hate it so much. All I know is that Win 7 is like Vista, only "better" somehow. Beyond that, I don't actually know much about it.

I still need convincing... perhaps to hear some of the features that I'd personally find enjoyable, beyond the utilisation of all that shiny new memory.

I'm a gamer at heart, with varied tastes. I enjoy old as well as new. I don't want to leave my 32-bit apps behind, if possible. Dual-booting is an option I've heard of, but never attempted, and my harddrive is kind of small for that sort of thing (150GB).

I guess what I'm really asking is... will I regret it? Or will I be saying "why didn't I do this sooner"?

Life Advice / Re: Too introspective

That sounds a little overboard. I've read that replaying events in your mind is very common, moreso in females than males, but I'd hardly call it OCD. I also don't fully understand your explanation of that experiment, or how it would help. We aren't talking about an obsession over inconsequential acts like picking up coins; that definitely WOULD constitute OCD. :)

Sometimes I get too inwardly focused and introspective.

I'll spend a good part of the day replaying some minor event in my mind, going over every single little detail to see where things went right or wrong.  My mood can swing wildly as I try to figure out if there's some lesson I haven't learned or if I'm sliding back into bad habits.

Does anyone else have a problem like this?  Thanks.

I do that a lot too. I find myself obsessing over some event, thinking how I should have said this or that. In fact, it happened just this morning when my folks were arguing over something stupid and I yelled at them. I spent the rest of the day replaying it in my head, coming up with all the witty remarks I could have said instead of just "ACT LIKE ADULTS!" xD

It stems from frustration and insecurity, methinks. It's difficult to repress. I try to take my mind off it somehow.

Life Advice / Re: Family Concerns
« on: July 05, 2010, 10:17:20 pm »
Tell your mother before deciding anything. She has a right to know that her ex-abusive-husband has secretly contacted her daughter and asked to meet you. This should raise HUGE red flags!!

I would not even entertain the idea of meeting him without letting my entire family know. I'm not paranoid, this is basic common sense. Please do it, Ren. It's a harsh world out there, and when you give people the benefit of the doubt, they will abuse it mercilessly. Protecting yourself should be your top priority when a suspicious thing like this happens.

If your life has been better without him, leave it in the past. Regardless of whether people can change or not, the real question you have to ask whether someone who physically abuses children ever deserves your forgiveness. Has he earned it? Or has he just turned up out of the blue, trying to win back your trust? Think about it.

Stay safe. <3

I'd post mine, but I don't plan on updating my firmware. Yet. Patience will pay off. I have to believe...!
