Life Advice / Re: The next 24 hours

Good luck, but don't force anything. She may appreciate your friendship; don't go and ruin it over such a thing as that funny feeling in the seat of your pants. :)

Ahh. I tried that, but I was clicking the outer areas. Yup, a doubleclick inside the border of the 'inner' window area does indeed toggle it.

633
Oh thank science, that worked. Thank you very much! :)

I'm curious, though... how would you even access this 'simple' mode? It happened to me by accident, but judging by how easy it was (relatively) to escape it, I would have assumed a similar action could put it back that way too.

God dommot, I just realised I posted this in Other Games. Totally meant to post it in Life Advice, but clicking Other has become such a habit for me lately... Uhhh, in lieu of being able to move it myself, I guess I'll just lock it. :P

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Earlier today I had a really bizarre system crash involving cascading error popups that would not close and kept multiplying. When I attempted to use the taskmanager to close the popups, one of them apparently did what you see in the screenshot- it neutered my taskmanager, such that there's no menu, no tabs... just a resizable box that I can drag around the screen.

Pretty sure I'm not virused, I've done a sweep with Malwarebytes and I have MSE always active, but I'll do some additional scans just to be safe. In the meantime, not even a reboot has helped.

I'm not sure what to Google... if anyone recognises this, or knows of a way to 'reset' the window, I'd be extremely grateful!

Hmm, I got a few. Gotta label them with the game names though, because I hate these threads that don't tell you what the games are.

I may or may not have been responsible for this house fire. Uhh, sorry.

But the beginning struggle is a major part of the gameplay. I don't understand the desire to skip that journey. Once my character basically becomes undefeatable in typical city/lab exploration, I get bored.

Other Games / Re: A Terraria Server in Need of RolePlayers

They can word their rules however they like. People will play it, or they won't. I'm not sure the intention of this thread was to gather suggestions for improving the "friendliness" of the server.

That is not to say I don't think discussion should exist here; just, I don't see the point of browbeating them into managing their server differently. Their server, their rules.

Just my 2p, as someone not at all interested in playing this, and equally uninterested in backseat-moderating their content.

Life Advice / Re: Venturing into the world of smartphones
« on: June 29, 2012, 02:32:04 am »
I'm recently looking to get my first smartphone too. I've had an old Nokia clunker for the past decade, so I've never known what it's like to take pictures with a phone, or even look at them on a phone. My phone can do two things: call people, and text people. Text-only texting, no less.

After some fumbling, I've decided to shoot for a Samsung Galaxy S2. Primary reasons for this decision were the big bright "amoled" screen, which will make a whole world of difference when using my phone for non-phonely activities, which I plan on doing a lot, just because I can. It has excellent technical specs: 1.2GHz dual core processor, 16GB storage, 8 megapixel camera (which frankly I have no idea if that's any good) and makes me weep because I remember owning a big heavy PC that was half as powerful as this. The Android OS is the best choice as far as smartphone OSs go, for someone like me who enjoys open-sauceness and customisability.

And the best thing about the S2? Its price is going to drop like a rock in the coming months, due to the very recent release of the S3. Hurrah!

Life Advice / Re: Help Dealing with Ex-Fiance
« on: June 29, 2012, 01:52:56 am »
Keyword here is "ex-fiance". There should be nothing left to "deal with". Having ended the relationship, you cannot simply go back to being friends. Love does not work that way.

And don't make this a gender issue, please. It makes you sound like you're desperate to shift the blame onto some uncontrollable factor. You need to take responsibility for your actions. I'd give exactly the same advice to a girl in your situation.

Don't drag things on in the fantasy dreamland hope that things can be 'fixed'. The sooner you realise this is irrepairable, the sooner you can move on and let her move on with life.

Why would I do that? I want them to not exist so my search terms aren't screwed up. :P

Other Games / Re: Virtual Pet Sites

I hate - no, I loathe virtual pet sites. Their prolification and inexplicable popularity makes searching for ACTUAL virtual pets practically impossible. Or virtually impossible, you might say.

Many times over the long years have I attempted to indulge my inner AI fascination, hunting down obscure Creatures-esques programs, experiments, or fully-fledged projects. "Google," I say, "show me your finest selection of simulated life. Dazzle me with the beauty and complexity of digital life that can act and think and feel and fear."

But instead of finding examples of autonomous living animals and advanced AI agents that broaden the horizons of simulation technology, I'm instead bombarded with page after page of shitty "virtual pet" templated websites, filled with shitty art of ponies and dragons and tiger-whale-mammoth hybrids, that you "take care of" by buying shitty pictures of plastic hairbrushes and teddybear toys that, somehow, keep them "happy", while exploring a shitty picture of a "world map" consisting of shitty pictures of inexplicably magic fountains that give you free bars of chocolate, and post offices staffed by tie-wearing unicorns, so you can play shitty Flash puzzle games that look like they belong on Facebook in order to win fake gold coins that you spend buying auctions of pixie dust to transform your shitty starter pet into a demonic fiery behemoth with smoke and flames billowing around its portrait, which of course makes no difference to its stats which are mainly put to use in shitty "arena" battles with other users who've spent over $9000 real life money buying stat-boosting items and turning their pets into game breaking demi-gods. And this is apparently what the WHOLE INTERNET thinks of as "virtual pets" because I'll be damned if I have ever found more than a HANDFUL of real, actual websites concerning actual virtual pets that aren't fucking tamagotchis.

I spit on these damned sites and I hope they all burn and suffer hardware failure, and that everyone who's ever built one gets their hands severed by spinning =steel large serrated disks=.

So yeah, that's what I think.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: New World
« on: June 24, 2012, 02:37:38 pm »
I'm afraid I can't suggest settings that would deliver exactly the environment you're looking for, but I would like to take a moment to highly recommend the Perfect World utility for generating worlds. It is an extremely powerful external application, allowing you to fully randomly generate a world to your liking. You can set Perfect World to handle all aspects of worldgen, or leave some to DF. It can generate the ratios of desert/swamp/forest/plains/hills, as well as create randomized heightmaps for the topography, and then generate realistic rainmaps and volcanic maps from that. There's also a trick you can use to maximise that volcano count, whilst spreading them far and wide and not causing the entire world to be saturated with volcanism.

I use it for 34.11 and honestly I just can't ever go back to the regular worldgen these days. It's really that spectacular.

645
For the sake of full disclosure, I'm running 34.11 with the Modest Mod, a custom race, and the Language Unlocked mod. Tileset being used: Jolly Bastion 9x12.

My errorlog.txt has remained empty during these tests. map_rejection_log.txt is showing a pretty typical selection of map rejections for all of the tested maps, with more rejections occuring on those maps made smallest (65x129 and 129x65).
