Not sure why I didn't spot this before, but there seems to be a rather nice thread dedicated to helping coding newbies over in Creative. :)

Never leave viruses on your system just because "they aren't messing with me".

You'll regret it when you start realising all your passwords and banking details have been stolen.

A couple of years ago I began making an extensive effort to translate a PSX game that had never had an English release or fan-patch made online. After rediscovering my notes, I'm increasingly interested in trying my hand at making my own patch, but I have no idea where to start.

Are there any resources or tools people use for this sort of thing, or is it all brute force hex-editing of ISOs?

Thanks for any tips. :]

Dragon Warrior Monsters 2, procedural world generation?! :o I AM SO THERE!! Nothing gets me wetter than randomly generated stuff. :D

Err Animal Crossing isn't really a breeding game...

True enough, but it has a lot of other activities that could count as being sort of farm-sim-ish. It barely qualifies, but I believe it's worth a mention anyway.

You don't need to include it, since it's only an incredibly minor side-part of the game, but Dark Cloud 2 had some pretty fun fish breeding in it.

If Chao Garden counts, then that does too. ;)

Apperently the ban has been revoked now: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/03/11/ea-retracts-game-ban-for-forum-violation/

EA says it was a mistake. I call bullshit.

Heh, it was a mistake all right. ;) They're just now realising it, is all.

Also, how can you not have Dragon Quest Monsters on there? For the GBC and DS. I LOVE them.

Never heard of it before! :) But it shall be added.

Monster Rancher MMO raises an interesting issue; should I include MMOs in this list? I've played similar ones called Monster & Me and Fairyland Online in the past, and they're both focused on capturing and training monsters to do battle. They certainly qualify, but I'm not sure how many of them actually exist out there... this list could grow very big, very fast. :x

Two Playstation-based suggestions. First is Jade Cocoon. ... Second is Dragon Seeds.

Aha! Adding those also. Thanks. :)

Haha, oh man, you know what's funny? Creatures specifically put this whole idea in my head, I think. :) I've been hyped about the whole Grandroids thing lately.

They certainly fit the list (and will be added; thanks, diamok!) but schooler's right, they aren't the exact sorta thing I'm looking for in this case.

Nodding along in agreement with many of the complaints being expressed, especially EA's meddling and the sneaky secuROM shit.

But I still torrented the game, and I'm having fun with it.

Yes, it's very different to DA:O in many aspects. Worse in some ways, better in others. I don't really care to compare it, though. While I could not truthfully disagree with any of the arguments put against it, the truth of the matter (to me, at least) is that it's still a fairly entertaining romp in its own right, and at least deserving of a single playthrough.

The character interactions are still entertaining and they've increased the quality of the animations all round. People look a lot less stiff and awkward, which heightens the feeling of immersion. I'm actually enjoying the faster pace of combat this time, but I may not be totally unbiased here as I played a Mage in DA:O, and a Rogue in DA2, and found the Mage experience much more difficult/frustrating. Perhaps Rogues in DA:O are just as fun? I do plan on going back and playing the first game again once I'm done with this.

I definitely don't like the shops in DA2. They are annoying, even without comparison to other games. One thing I really hate, though, is how new enemies magically spawn-in near a battle in progress. That's a very, very poor gameplay mechanic which adds nothing but artificial difficulty.

Anyway, I don't think righteous indignation is worth missing a half-decent game for, no matter how justified the outrage. :) If it didn't have the name "Dragon Age", it'd stand on its own as a mediocre, derivative, but still passable and in many cases highly enjoyable game. Don't buy it, though. Torrent it, or rent it at most. EA certainly don't deserve to be rewarded for their nasty actions lately.

Persona is neat. I have P3P. Not sure I'll include it on the list though, it does have a form of combining/fusion of the Personas, but they are used more like magic spells for the main characters.

Princess Maker... I think I know which one that is. Technically it ticks a lot of boxes, but I'm not sure it appeals to me... but, it does deserve to go on the list, I think. :) Thanks for mentioning it.

What I'd really love to find is some kind of repository of example tasks or challenges, ranked by difficulty and/or assumed knowledge. My biggest problem right now is having any idea how to apply the theory stuff I've been learning into a practical application. Admittedly, part of that is a motivation issue; I'm sure I could think up many little programs to build, but my brain just gets scared at the idea of starting out with no guidance and I end up going back to reading about it, rather than actually doing it. It's the daunting task of getting over that first hurdle, when you have no experience or the confidence of past projects to build upon. Once I get the ball rolling, I'm sure it'll start getting easier!

Life Advice / Re: How do I get Fallout 1 to run on my system?
« on: March 11, 2011, 01:46:04 pm »
Damn, wish I could remember how I was playing Fallout on the same OS a few months ago. I vaguely recall the problems you mentioned, but I don't think the solution was too difficult to find.

All I can suggest is to try setting your desktop to 16-bit colour. There's a way to do this, too... ugh, why didn't I save these links? Wait, I think I'm confusing this with 24-bit. I distinctly recall that Win7 has trouble with one of these modes, so if you can't do one, try the other!

Sorry. I'll hunt around a little bit and post back if I remember or figure out anything.

Edit: This post sounds promising. http://www.sevenforums.com/gaming/8870-fallout-2-a.html#post109168

The Sonic Adventure games have Chao raising, and from the description of Chocobo Stallion you gave, it sounds very similar. However, you have to actually play the main game to get into them.

There's also Elona, which has monster ranches you can setup and do stuff with, but I'm not sure how in depth it is, and it would take a quite a bit of playing the main game to get enough money for a ranch.

Ah yes, Chaos! Knew I had forgotten something. :) Thanks, I'll add it to the list. I always wanted to play those games just for the Chaos, but in the end it wouldn't be worth it, hehe (not that Sonic Adventure was all that bad).

Also, I'm glad to hear about the HM games being (mostly?) endless. That's awesome and very encouraging. I've actually played the original SNES game quite a lot and really enjoyed it. Any opinions on newer titles that people consider to be the best of the bunch?

I've had the itch lately to play some sort of monster breeding/ranching game, or some variation thereof. Could someone suggest any recommendations? I'll also try to make this post somewhat informative for other people looking for similar games, so here's my list so far. :)

The games in this genre I've heard of/checked out (Key: Farming, Racing, Battling, Breeding)

FB Harvest Moon series (SNES, GB, GBA, PSX, PS2, PS3, PSP, N64, DS, Wii)
BB Monster Rancher series (PSX, PS2, GBC, GBA, DS, PC)
FBB Shepherd's Crossing (PSX, PS2, PSP)
FB Viva Pinata (360, PC, DS)
BB Pokemon series (duh) (Gameboy, GBC, GBA, DS, N64, GC, Wii)
RB Chocobo Stallion (PSX)
B Creatures series (PC, Mac, PSX)
BB Dragon Quest Monsters (DS)
BB Dragon Warrior Monsters (GBA)
BB Jade Cocoon series (PSX, PS2)
BB Dragon Seeds (PSX)
RB Gallop Racer series (PSX, PS2, PC)
RB G1 Jockey 4 (PS2, PS3, Wii)
B Azure Dreams (PSX, GBC)
BB Shin Megami Tensei: Demikids (GBC)

Honourable mentions:

B Black & White series (PC, Mac)
Princess Maker series (SNES, Dreamcast, PSX, PS2, PC)
RBB Dark Cloud 2 (PS2)
RBB Sonic Adventure series (Dreamcast)

...I think what I'm looking for is mostly along the lines of Monster Rancher or Shepherd's Crossing. Chocobo Stallion is also excellent.

I'll go through my list and tell you what I think about each; please comment and make any suggestions for what I should try out!
This list is actually growing kinda big now, and what with all the new additions that I haven't personally experienced myself, it wouldn't be much use to comment about them. :) So I've eliminated this section for now, but I might add it back later, and just give a short synopsis of each game listed, for quick reference.

Thoughts/suggestions? Anything new I'll add to the list. Thanks in advance!

Regarding Tylui, snake oil salesmen piss me off.

Mazonas, so sorry to hear about your kitty... please don't ruin your financial life for her, though. :( Think about what is best, not only for her, but for you as well. If there is no cure to her condition, then prolonging the struggle would not do either of you any good. Life has a way of dealing us shitty cards at times, but it's the hand we have to play. Do the right thing, and even if it's difficult, you'll have no regrets later on.

He has said that he didn't want to spend forever travelling to have lunch with everyone (although he didn't expect anyone to donate that much either).

5 isn't a limit, though. More than 5 people have donated that much, they just didn't do it fast enough to get the lunch reward. :P
