General Discussion / Re: Childhood naivete
« on: April 02, 2009, 08:25:09 pm »
Wow. Just wow. Some of you guys hold on to such bitterness...

There's a difference between holding on to bitterness and realizing and trying to come to terms with negative aspects about your life and yourself. The bad stuff has just as much influence as the good. It is occasionally helpful to vent these, as you just did.
Im more in line with Kogan.  While childhood and HS sucked, I got over it.  Its called growing up and gaining maturity.  I no longer try to blame my problems on my parents or my teachers.  The problems are all mine.  Accepting that fact and dealing with it has made my life bountiful instead of bitter.

Of course' I am still an asshole.   :P

also, HS was more that 20 years ago, so, I have a lengthy perspective of life to weigh against it.

Edit:  I do wish I could have my innocence back.  Which, is what I believe this thread was originally speaking of.  I wish I could still do things like go nextdoor from my grandfathers mansion in brentwood to OJ's house (yes, the OJ!) and get his autograph again.  He signed it saying "Always do the right thing!" in 1974.  No lie.  That would be awesome.

OK, again, last try.  It is showing up as a physical device in my hardware.
Reformatiing my HD will wipeout all my current programs, so, no thanks.
How could a physical device that doesnt really exist show up suddenly on my PC as a physical adaptor?

I just opened up my laptop at home after using it at work all day.  Suddenly I have a brand new local network adaptor called TAP-win32 adapter V8.  I haven't installed any new programs recently.  It appears this is some Linux based vpn protocal.  That freaks me out.  Has someone hijacked my laptop?

if you know anything, please help.

Actually, I was trying to be sarcastic. The (poorly executed)sarcasm was aimed at the general idea of making a topic such as this one, so that everyone who posts here can join the club of "smart people", as only smart people would complain about dumb ones.

Well!  I haven't posted here so I must be......ahhh crap!

I have to second the earlier recommendation of Gene Wolfe, fantastic stuff.

I have really burnt out on fantasy now mostly, except for foe Stephen Erickson's Tales of the Malazan.  That stuff is unbelievable, probably from him being a RL archeologist/anthropologist in the Med/Middle East for 30 plus years.

Now I am deep into Sci-Fi mostly Space Opera, which of course, David Weber rules. I think the Honor Harrington series is the best reading i have done in many years.  If your a fan of Horatio Hornblower or of the series that produced "Master and Commander" (i cant remember the authors name, i think its O'brien tho) then you will love the Honor Harrington series.

Other pulp fiction is fun, like the Starfist books etc.

Oh, if you love combat, any kind, read John Ringo.  That dude rocks.  Eat anti-matter Posleen Boy!

I could prolly list books forever.

Last notion:  The Silmarillion was by far my favorite Tolkien book, so take that into account with my recomendations.  Also, any book less than 500 pages really isnt worth reading IMHO.

We Aries rule, Happy Birthday.  Mine was on the 22nd.

Approximately 1/12 of the whole world's population is Aries.

Being an Aries, I should argue with you about that!   ;D

"Break a deal !  Spin the wheel!  Raggady man!"
I live in Dallas and I am not surprised at all.
Correction:  I am surprised it hasnt happened earlier.
Second correction:  It probably has, under the guise of boxing or wrestling in days before the term "cage fighting" was coined.  Teenage boys fighting each other is a very old problem.

Sergius & Shoruke:  I see we are at an impasse, as apparently we are all refusing to even consider each others points and just keep beating our own dead horses over and over.  I am sure we think of each other isn't getting the point, which most often happens in religous disagreements, too much vested personal interest to overcome most likely.

That being said, Sergius, your last post didnt make much sense to me.  Not logically or such, just that it seemed like one of those times where our heads are thinking one thing and our fingers typing another.  I have those all the time!

we should all probably read more on Calvanism and one of its main counterparts, Arminianism, before we continue a discourse about predestination.  People who are, I think, much smarter than us have wrestled with that issue with far better results and arguments than ours.

anyway, God Bless

Idiom:  well, thats not quite exactly what i said but.......

Sergius:  I said in my original post ( i think, maybe 1 after) about how I am not an adherent to predestination.  But also, predestination and free will are anything but simple logic.

Also, "not even a God could" is a strange statement.  If He is omnipotent, He very well could do anything.  You cant define "G O D" as you do with only omniscience without omnipotence.  They are part and parcel.

Greek Oracles are just poor chicks sold by their family to some dirty/greedy men who get her hopped up on whatever is avaliable (sulfuric fumes in the case of delphi) and let her ramble and babble while they "decypher" the mysteries for the paying marks rubes yokels customers.

Oh, and about that tree falling, yes it makes a sound, but no it doesnt make a noise, and hands off my frakkin sandwich!  :)

@Gorjo: "yeah, i think I was thinking a little more abstractly than I was typing, or maybe vice-versa."

I understand completely.

Umm.  I'm going to contend with you on this point: "He quit doing that..."  God is as involved today as he was 2000 years ago, maybe more so.  And, indeed, God has no trouble getting directly involved.

-(e)EP

what I meant by that is He is no longer directly affecting the world, by doing things like Sodom and Gomorrah, as an example.  He withdrew from such things and sent His Son.  At least, thats my opinion.
____________
Shoruke:  omniscient, yeah i know that spelling, its an adjective.  I meant the verb.  I think its omniscience, not omnisciense.  Anyway, what  I meant without sarcasm is that human logic can't actually grasp what omniscient and omnipotent beings are capable of, because, by definition, they are unlimited and therefore undefinable.  By saying someone is omniscient and therefore knows all therefore He MUST know all ever isn't taking into account that fact that such a being could easily decide to close his eyes.........and be surprised.  Thats the rub.  Can God be surprised?  His being Omnipotent and Omniscient both confirms and denies that statement.  Thats why human logic fails.

anyway, thats how I see it.
