I used regional prospector once or twice, never actually placed a fort that had anything just because I am a strange player who wanted a terrain challenge, like a flat, haunted area with 3 rivers  (*shudder*) for a humie challenge settlement.  Prolly should change my login name to masochist :)  Yeah, losing is fun.  I think.......

Gorjo MacGrymm of the Clan MacGrymm started off innocently enough around 1980 just after reading The Hobbit and LOTR when i was 10 and needing a new D&D character.  I wanted something appropriately dwarfy and I thought "...Thorin, Turin, Gimli, Gloin...uhh Gorjo!  yeah, perfect." and that was that.  About 5 minutes later he was exalted to the Gorjo the Grim status.  Funny side note, in the early 90's I joined on with a new phone company just after goverment deregulation in the US and they didnt ask for any ID as part of thier promotion, so, Gorjo the Grim (spelled just like that) had a telephone number listed in the phone book!  :)  I always laugh when i think of the data entry intern reading over that application and then entering it into the database.  The whole MacGrymm clan thing just evolved outta time, prolly from watching to much highlander (my grandfather was a highlander - not the immortal kind, that woulda been cool!- but the kind that came to the US back in the 19## teens).  Anyway, way more Info than necessary.

PS besides my forum name, I usually respond to f***er, A**hole, S***head, bastard, f***ing bastard and "you complete f***ing bastard." as well as many others :)

Images go in the avatar. Text goes in the sig. This makes the most sense in terms of compactness of display, since there's a lot of otherwise-wasted space in the avatar slot.

If you really need to show an image that doesn't fit in the avatar area, you can make a post for it. Other forums I've been on have often ended up having a gallery/art-oriented subforum for this kind of thing.

i second this exactly.

but even avatars bug me

probably a failing of my own

Good story.  i had a father get taken by a mood immediately following a tantrum he finished (during a terrible spiral following a bronze colossus doing bad bad things to my fortress).  he rushes into the masons shop and gets his materials.  he begins working furiously on his project.  Every few minutes or so during his work I would get a message about "Urist McInfant - dont 'member his name- has been hurt, maimed, torn, bashed, ripped limb from limb".  I can only assume some of the materials he needed for his great artifact of a "dwarf surrounded by dwarves" required REAL dwarf bits and such.  So sad

I think they got your questions answered, but there are a few more things to learn about military.

use [m] to list all dwarves.  from there you can [w] and assign weapons and armor types to each dwarf (miners are always unarmed, woodcutters will have axes of course).  many players like to remove the weapons from military units not on duty so that they spar via wrestling in the barracks, gaining strength and avoiding any major sparring accidents due to swords etc.....

also at the [m] page is another command [v] squad where you can set if they hang out at their station, chase down monsters, harass wild game etc.  carefull, or they might be chasing down a bunny rabbit when something really ugly comes along and beats the ever living f*** outta your fortress.....wait, that was MY fortress...:P  tradegy

lastly, at the [m] page you can [enter] to promote a dwarf to sgt, bossman, general, useless braindead f***stick moron, target numero uno, lazy-bastard, 'frag'im in the shitter' or whatever you like to call your military commanders (can you tell i was in the army?)  hit [enter] on the leader and then enter again on those under him in his squad.  NOTE:  you can have multiple squads jumped togetehr under yet more commanders, altho in the end this is for ease of use when BAD THINGS are attacking you and you NEED ALL you guys in the fight at 1 spot quickly, make 1 big squad and station them in the middle of the s***.

but speaking of tradegy - I got sick of those annoying dark gnomes running rampant scaring my poor wittle dwarfies so I sent my troopers out to deal with them, and once my guys were good and scattered chasin' the little gnomes (god i hate gnomes, all gnomes, in any game, most useless creature to exist-not), a bronze colossus arrived and proceeded to um....well.....be a colossus I suppose, and smash most everyone else flat before my troopers could reassemble.  Once they did, they were arriving in singles and pairs and were mostly useless fodder for the great bronze behemoth!  Luckily, (or not - depends on how you play), the fortress was declared a barony immediately upon the arrival of the colossus and her most pointless majesty baroness nonamegonnadiesoon appeared with her tax collector and personal guard of hammeres, who were also no match for the VERY nearby colossus.  I am still laughing.  She flew a LOOOOOOONG way.

For Dasleah if he is reading this:  my fortress was caller Amoshats which i of course read to be "asshats", thanks!

I have had the same thing happen a few times.  I think there were not any common factors between the events besides maybe diorite or mudstone.  Maybe the site was surveyed in the past by a legendary geologist and the new arrivals were coming to claim the riches when they saw "us".  I think they are plotting our demise, waiting for the perfect moment.  Thats why we should kill them, all, first, even the pets (especially).
