I did all the things you listed above (i believe) and still couldnt ever get [t] to work.
I tried to get the area cleared for the first caravan to arrive, but I had 15 different elevations between me and the nearest map edge, no ramps, full of boulders. Set 3 of my initial dwarves to clear the simplest path i could find for the wagon. It took so long i just turned off the game in mid summer, they were maybe 10% done with clear/road/chop/smooth commands
what am i missing?

ok, just figured this games BASIC system (uber heavy extra emphasis on BASIC with lotsa DUH! on the side). Basicly sat down all weekend trying to get to the caravan and be functional. Pretty much made every error you can. I doubt I stumbled across anyway new to spend 4-5 hours pointlessly, but of course this is me I am talking about.
1. Here goes;
2 caravans 2 turn arounds in 2 games. didnt even try to survive the winter without the initial caravan. no way without more suuplies and immigrants.
sooooo - the first caravan said "no trade depot" and I said "trade depot?! since when is there a traade depot in this game!" but of course there is. So now onto fort #2 and I am cranking pretty good, even with my 1 dwarf soldier/hunter getting murdered by a named unique wolf right of the get go (did i see a 'diablo roaming the earth'......oh no....wait.....nm -
). So the caravan shows up I am jazzed (after so many hours of staring at this screen all weekend that I think expire from torpitude) but then i get a "caravan has no access and turns around". . . . . . ARRRGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Amidst many cries of "Oh No! Comeback" from me and "Our leader is a stupid noob" or, even better, "Death to the boss! Storm the castle! Off with his head! You may be a millionaire" and other shouts from my hungry and tired stunties, I said...........huh? I looked, says now you need roads...with stone or blocks....HOLY S***! hwo the hell am i gonna get a 3x3 road to the end of the map through 30 mountian elevation changes, 5 rivers and god knows what other crap AND have time to craft and build those blocks?.......come on!
So.............................................................
please tell this idiot monkey how to get the caravan so he can get his 'nana!
Normally i dont ramble like this all scatterbrained, but as I said, i have been playing this game ALL weekend long, and i mean that with a litlle break or two for food and water (read make-water) breaks.
(sigh)
did this make any sense. . . .
:O
Lose lose lose all day long
lose lose lose while i sing this song
lose lose lose all day long
lose lose lose...........
YAY! DF!
I have been trading with dwarves for a good time, on year 4 now. Have a competent trader. We goto the depot, mark our wants and their inventory and settle at a boon for them in the name of 7*(gp whatever). The say, no thanks. Ok, I give them 157. No. I give them 307. No. I settle at 1294* for them extra in the end and he says he is tired of my childish games and storms out, not letting me buy precious food stuffs I need for the many many many (gah) hungry dwarven children infecting (yes, i said infecting - multiplying like a virus - and no, into infanticide....yet) my fortress.
Why the hell did he get so finicky all of a sudden? I literrally ended up offering everyhitng I had for the total sale (only 7000* total anyway). Anyone know what gives?

thats not what i have noticed. i am pretty sure that other dwarfves can get accidentallly shot. i am not positive tho, as i only notice the aftermath of said accidents and the gore left behind, not the accidents themselves. its possible taht some off duties were wrestling in the middle of the archery range, but i dont think so.
anyone else got any ideas on this?
and to quote the Great Maxwell Smart:
"I have a large yacht..........
ok.
Would you believe a small dinghy?"
but seriously, anyone have any definate knowledge on animal reproduction? Couldnt find any in the wiki, course I am stupid so that doesnt mean its not in the wiki. I am wanting to start a cattle baron fortress and am trying to figure out my bull / cow ratio. Can one big brahma do the ....uhh...(ahem) job? or do i really need lotsa bulls ( im fulla bulls-) for those hard to please cows?
