DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Should be a quick one
« on: January 21, 2009, 12:53:22 am »
Fishing takes a loooong time at low levels of skill.  That's probably the problem.  I've never actually tried catching live fish, but since you mentioned a fisherdwarf, I assume it works the same way as regular fishing.

Edit: I noticed that wasn't really the problem at all.  If he's not standing by a fish source, maybe the problem is he can't reach a fish without swimming.  Try setting up a 2-3 full cistern.  I had turtles and things show up whenever I did waterworks.  Since he can walk right up to them, that might do the trick.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Roads

Unfortunately, no matter what you do, simple pack animals will always spawn wherever they like and ignore your fine road.  Maybe if you put in long drawbridge chains blocking off three entire sides of the map... Hmm.  Might have to try that.

What I find amusing is when the wagons show up near my road, the donkeys show up on the other side of the map, and the liaison shows up on one of the remaining sides.  "All right, Merchant Playbook Scenario #45!  The Three-Pronged-Flanking Maneuver!  Go, go, go!  For mugs and narrow beak dog leather thongs!"

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Goblin outpost liason?
« on: January 19, 2009, 04:27:26 am »
Short answer: No.

Long answer: Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Less assish long answer: The dwarves conquered a few dark fortresses, inducting some goblins into their civ.  One got elected to Liaison status.

I do like that severing, grabbing, and soiling of entrails was something that nearly happened automatically because all the code was in place and just waiting for the guts to be pressurized.

I wouldn't want my dwarves armed with muskets!
Urist McMusketeer has been ecstatic lately.  He has had his weapon blow up in his hands lately.  He has accidentally shot a comrade lately.  He has accidentally been shot by a comrade lately.  He has lost a friend to tragedy.  He has suffered serious injuries lately.  He has eaten in a legendary dining room lately.

Also, nerve damage.  I guess so you can roleplay that one Bond villain who couldn't feel pain.
Or Thomas Covenant.

Hmm. ¤White Gold Ring¤.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: multi-story buildings...&^!!@#@!(*!
« on: January 12, 2009, 09:59:20 am »
If you want to make stalactites, you need to work from the bottom up in two stages.  That's the only caveat.

If you want to use bridges, build them first, then build the upper layer(s) that will support your stalactite(s), then build the stalactite, then deconstruct the bridges.  If you're using floors, you just need to make sure to deconstruct them carefully in stages, and make sure it's the last thing you do.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Noble boats?

I don't know if this is fixed yet, but back in 38, frozen water supported things a little oddly.  If it melted such that things were unsupported, they'd stay up just fine until I quit and reloaded the fortress.

If that bug is still there, you could get the same effect by only saving while the water was frozen.  "You dare to mandate lace agate floodgates in the middle of summer?  Taste the wrath of SAVING!"

How about a little fire, Urist!

Hot Pepper Sauce Surprise
Serves 2
You will need:

    * 150g iceberg lettuce
    * 30ml hot pepper sauce

Instructions:

   1. pre-heat the oven to 230 C
   2. barbeque the hot pepper sauce
   3. spoon the hot pepper sauce onto a warmed plate
   4. put the hot pepper sauce in the fridge for 2 minutes
   5. saute the hot pepper sauce
   6. fry the hot pepper sauce
   7. fry the iceberg lettuce until browned
   8. bake for 70 minutes and serve hot

Well, that'd surprise me, at least.

Self-raising Flour Bake
Serves 5
You will need:

    * 110g port
    * 10g self-raising flour

Instructions:

   1. pre-heat the oven to 210 C
   2. throw the port away
   3. toast the self-raising flour
   4. bake for 20 minutes and serve hot

This is a dwarven flour biscuit.  The ingredients are minced dwarven flour and dwarven wine that I forbid during the cooking.

Sausages Pie
Serves 1
You will need:

    * 70g ham
    * 2 carrots
    * 3 sausages
    * 4 pork chops
    * 80ml cod liver oil

Instructions:

   1. pre-heat the oven to 180 C
   2. barbeque the cod liver oil (Mm.)
   3. put the cod liver oil in the fridge for 2 minutes (Okay.)
   4. eat the ham (Yeah, the barbecuing worked up my appetite.)
   5. add one tablespoon of the cod liver oil (To the ham I'm eating?)
   6. fry the cod liver oil (Right.)
   7. microwave the cod liver oil (Um...)
   8. flambe the cod liver oil (Well, it is flammable...)
   9. put the cod liver oil in the fridge to set (Sure, I'll buy that.)
  10. flambe the cod liver oil (Again?)
  11. throw the cod liver oil away (...)
  12. stir-fry the pork chops (Okay, now we're cooking.)
  13. sauté the carrots (Mmm, now that I like.)
  14. add the carrots (Yup.)
  15. sauté the sausages (Sure.)
  16. bake for 80 minutes and serve hot (Allez Cuisine!)

So we have a snack, waste some oil, and then make... a pretty decent meal.

DF General Discussion / Re: Post your: Mad plans
« on: December 30, 2008, 02:37:21 am »
I've tried creating dwarven Rapture off and on.  My last attempt, I actually drew up plans on grid paper for the large brass lighthouse that would be the only aboveground structure.  That plan was cut short by carp.

This thread needs to be left for dead.
Sorry, the residents of the forum are too evil.  Even dead, rising to the top gives a good excuse to whip out a pun.

-Cats are never butchered.  Arguably it's more cruel to stuff them into a cage until they either die of old age or get hauled off to some human hovel, but I couldn't kill a cat unless it had multiple red wounds and was collapsing all the time.

-Space gets used.  If I've mined out a vein of stuff and it's not really useful anymore, it becomes the hallway for a new habitation sector or mausoleum.  Rooms get carved out of the sides, the whole thing gets smoothed, the whole nine yards.  Likewise big pockets.  A magnetite pocket gets smoothed and sectioned off for whatever purpose I need at the time.

-Engravers train to legendary with smoothing before they even TRY doodling.

-Lethality is a last resort.  But if you make me be lethal, then by Armok you will NOT walk into my fortress in one piece.  If a siege somehow gets through my 10/20-tile long hallway of cage traps, the next nine traps are 90 giant axe blades followed by a cage of war dogs.

-Artifacts have pride of place.  If an artifact can better the lives of the rabble, they can have it.  If not, it gets put in a dedicated stockpile in my founder's room.

DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress & Dreams
« on: December 23, 2008, 02:36:16 am »
I just had one last night.

Rather than being in DF, I was just playing it.  I thought nothing of this until I realized that after I designated a square of microcline to be dug, all the visible microcline was dig-designated.  Looking around a bit, I then noticed this long vein-shaped designation where I'd started digging out some metal.  Then I woke up and was like "WHOA! Auto-designating veins!  But it's a little buggy, I'd better post a bug report.  ...Wait.  I'm in bed.  Must've been a dream.  ...Wasn't there a DF dream thread in General?"

As to your problem, try not tying them up first. The impression i got from people talking about it is that tied up animals don't mate, but will give birth if already preggers. So leave them untied for a couple dwarf years and see if that helps.

I'll try it, but I doubt that's the issue. My roped-up camels, horses, cows, and dogs are littering like some insane super-littering... guy.
