DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Killing a mountain
« on: October 18, 2008, 03:21:00 pm »
Just go with the stairs and channels method. It's 100% safe and is reasonably fast. What you need to do is turn the part of the mountain you want gone into up/down stairs, with the exception of the top layer (which should be down stairs) and the bottom layer (which should be up stairs). Starting from the top, designate each level for channelling and don't designate the next one until the current one has been completely removed. If you do it right (and it's hard to do it wrong), no dwarves will get stuck or injured.

Yep, one other good reason to do this is that its very fast and easy to designate.
Simply completely designate each level with downstairs and then completely designate each level again with up/down stairs. (the lowest level of what you want to "kill" will obviously have to be up stairs)
Then just wait until the miners complete their jobs and then you have to channel layer per layer from top to bottom. (upstairs level will have to be cleared of the upstairs via remove upstairs/ramps)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Really annoying.

I don't believe there is.
The problem lies in that those items belong to said dwarf and isn't allowed to be touched by others, so if the owner itself can't get rid of those items, then they won't move, unless you can come up with a highly complex "water pushing" system.

DF Gameplay Questions / Miner has created an artifact, wutrutalk'nbout?
« on: October 18, 2008, 03:02:13 pm »
Is there a way to disable the skill mining as a mood inducing, artifact creating skill?
Imo, mining shouldn't count as being an artifact creating skill, its wrong i tells ya, just plain wrong.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: My eskimoes need more ice.
« on: September 22, 2008, 10:49:36 pm »

If you go for the pump approach, you will need a way to make ice on many tiles, not just the one output tile. The best way I can think of is to make a large ice-making plant based around a ton of pumps, with more emphasis on a lot of one-tile ice spots.

Because I know no way of making a massive cistern filled with water that alternated from freezing to melting.

Magma? Exactly how i'm not sure about.

Other Games / Re: Fallout 3, stupider than I imagined.
« on: September 20, 2008, 09:41:25 pm »
Come on people, every time i read the "but you haven't played it yet" argument i somehow picture this certain animal banging its head repeatedly against the same stone over and over again. Seriously, wake up and smell the napalm. And although that might sound like a good thing seeing that we're talking about Fallout, no, i ment it in the worst way possible.
We're talking Bethesda here, Bethesda that even can't do their own games well, no worse, Bethesda managing to butcher their own games over and over again. How many times does it take to come close and deliver, maybe, 50% of the fun and depth of that one game you made, what was it, freaking 12 years ago? Can anyone look right into my eyes and tell me with a straight face that there is "a" chance, "any" chance Bethesda might be able to make a) a good game b) a decent RPG and c) you know what, forget about c) "a respectable Fallout game". Not even with the best intentions can i believe in that. Seriously, look deep into yourself, doesn't matter if you are a fan of TES, doesn't matter if you're a fan of Fallout, doesn't matter if you aren't a fan of anything. Look deep into yourselves and tell me there is a chance Fallout 3 might actually turn out to be ok. And then try living in horrible shame for getting anyones hopes up for what obviously is an utterly lost cause.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Always running 1000 rivers?
« on: September 20, 2008, 02:48:45 pm »
[EROSION_CYCLE_COUNT:1000]

That's what it's running.  It's not trying to generate any rivers, since you've set those to 0, it's just running erosion for a thousand ticks.  Which, I think, will get you a world composed entirely of plains.

The good thing about this is that if you have some lone mountain tiles that have been eroded to almost a plain, you have very a good chance of finding many/all mountain features on a very tight spot.

Being run over by a wagon still tops everything though.

Just got an awesome idea, encrusting Dragons.
(I'm not kidding)

Skeletal carp.
"OMG, THEY CAN RUN OVER LAND, AAARRRRGHH_MY KNEES_GURGEL_DEATH".
Marauding elephants next to a river filled with hippos.
Chunks flying into the river galore. I like to imagine the elephants spiking the bodies and swinging them into the gaping mouths of the hippos.

Ok, they didn't "nearly" wiped out my starting seven, they utterly demolished them.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Fire
« on: September 17, 2008, 06:58:46 pm »
Unfortunately fire imps yeild no usable meat or bones when buchered.  Is there anything you can do with body parts?

On the contrary. Fire imp bones are quite valuable, their meat is to, although once it did "boil" in my butcher shop and even after preparing the meat it still kept on boiling in the stockpile. (could have been rather dangerous, with all the booze about, or can't it explode from boiling meat? dunno. Or was it their fat instead? Can't remember)
Also, their skin is quite valuable after being tanned.
