DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Multiple chairs per table in dining room?
« on: July 09, 2008, 03:43:38 am »
Strange, i'm at 35 some dwarfs, still have the same obsidian 4 table 4 chair dining room made into loam or whatever, rarely (never) do i see dwarfs "filling up" the dining room and rarely (never) do i see them eating elsewhere, yet they are all incredibly inpressed with eating in this "legendary" dining room.

No, a "lift" in English is a lift.  A "lift" in American is an elevator.

They're both silly, because that's only half the functionality.
Please tell me you're trying to introduce the word "up-and-down-box" to the world.

Its more an "up-and-down-and-left-and-right-and-forward-and-backward-box" i was thinking about, or doesn't that exist yet? (i come from the future you see)
Personally i like "descender", makes more sense to dwarves anyways.

The tallest natural waterfall was a brook (obviously) of about 50 z levels high (if i remembered correctly and excluding underground rivers wich never end), the widest a 1 z level high mainriver (didn't count exactly how wide).

I do find it kind of strange obsidian mechanisms aren't magmasafe, i guess its done for gameplay reasons though.

What Toady should implement (only for my personal pleasure ofc, hehe, egoism is fun) is a mechanical way to move floors and rooms (basically lifts wich can move in each vertical and horizontal direction). If something like that would be possible i would make myself the Cube (classic low cost movie). I imagine pathfinding to then implode the universe though.

Fill the world with terrifying fiery lava lakes and huge underground magmafalls. Fill the world with warm water, waterfalls and joyous steam and mist. Fill the world with inspiring engraved ice, fill the world with precious obsidian for trade, encase most of it in glass.

Well, can't say that i really agree, i love huge mountain peaks (also love flat surfaces though, mostly don't really like hills) if it wasn't for the crappy FPS (read, impossible FPS, its already hard enough to have a flat 2x2 fortress smoothly running with 100 dwarfs). I once embarked on the literal peak of a mountain, an awesome impressive sight wich i will revisit once i've bought myself a new rig. An other time i embarked on a extremely high and flat ledge, about 30 or so tiles wide going from south to north, the edges were perfectly vertical and on the left of the ledge some 30 z levels down there was a icy forrest, on the right some 40 z levels down a glacier. It also had adamantine and an underground river comming in from the north. The thing that bothers me most with mountains are brooks, i don't like them.

I fail at forum

 It could be worse.

"How do I mine for fish?"

Which hopefully will be possible sometime in the future. Heck, I would laugh if Toady adds a rare gem that creates fish when mined.

Actually, i think its possible, well i did saw someone mining trees.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Cave River
« on: July 05, 2008, 08:04:59 pm »
One time after i embarked and began to explorational dig walkways the first one i dug went straight into a cave river, even better then that it breached just at the sort of chasm where the river ended. (so nasties couldn't get to me)
That was a nice surprise.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Problem with Fey mood

I noticed this with glass furnaces, they always seemed to "prefer" normal ones, nomatter where they got their mood, didn't know that they ever refused magma versions.

This page helped me with most/all of my mood related problems.

Maybe its already too late and he's become melancholy or something similar.

That is a very nice idea Luckymoose.

As far as i know the tileset does not have any impact on performance, so theres no framedrops of using Mike Maydays tileset.

I have to admit I thought this was a strange way for one to get one's kicks. Trolling around at the Embark screen has a rather unattractively small 'world' map and a far too narrow view on the region map.

But when I messed around and figured out how to export the map data and viewed the picture that generates, I was enthralled. Zooming in and out at will really helps me get into it, but perhaps I'm just some kind of freakish cartographile. I went ahead and made a new world, and was quite impressed to see a huge haunted sea and some very handsome mountain ranges, apparently complete with a number of handsome alpine mountain ranges as well. (My first world had a fair dominance of temperate to tropical and scorching climates with a few scattered glaciers and such to the south, and no overly cool mountainous area).

It takes every ounce of my willpower not to generate enough worlds to be statistically likely to get a repeat (or die trying).

I haven't even thought of that, i also feel like some sort of cartographile but i'm horrible when it comes to geography.

Islands gonna be so much fun. One thing i would also like to see is some mountain features (like a chasm) on tiles besides mountains because those areas are sometimes very interesting because they border different kinds of landfeatures. (a lake with a beach with a forrest with a cliff with a broke with a river for example, sadly, apart from maybe finding magma, there isn't much else)
