I'd love to see a design for a swimming pool that would keep water perpetually at 4/7 depth, so you could station dwarves in it and train swimming safely. It should be doable but it's too complex for me to figure out.

Have a pond of 7 tiles and dig out 4 tiles above it, pump those four tiles full with water (28/28 water) and drop it in the 7 tile pond wich would then normally result in a perfect 7 4/7 tiles. Is that a solution? (just thought of it)

edit: okay i just saw someone already made the same suggestion, sorry.

Who likes to simply generate worlds and examine them looking for unique places and such, or simply for the heck of it? I know, sounds kinda pathetic, but somehow i sometimes have the urge to simply do that instead of continueing a fort. Its rather addictive.
I mostly like to generate small maps (i think they have two volcanoes, dunno) as i find them to have the best balance and best chance to generate some extreme worlds without having to resort to the bigger maps (my computer sucks btw).
Some interesting worlds i generated includes one wich is devided by a huge (i thing terrifying/haunted) lake right across the map, with on one side goblins and humans and on the other one elves, i also remember that a huge part of one of teh two sides is mirthfull or something similarly good bordering the evil lake.
Another world (medium i think) has 2 huge mainrivers (sadly they don't cross eachother, dunno if that ever even happens) right through some very interesting areas, no problem finding any sort of feared fish there. One of the mainrivers even has a 1 zlevel high waterfall! Would love to find a mainriver with a 5 or above z level waterfall. I simply embarked all over the mainriver, just to check it out and one place was very interesting landshape wise. The mainriver there looked like an almost straight grandcanyon, awesome to built a fort connecting the two sides of the river.
Another world lacked in goblins, another one was extremely fracktured, and not only in mountain features encompassing lakes and such, but also in civilizations.
And many more.
Anyways, ever did just that, generating worlds for fun? (or am i really that sad?) And some interesting results coming from it?

edit: some typos, i'm extremely tired.

I'm no good DF player yet so i just avoid the justice system alltogether wich is kinda strange, hope Toady makes a) unpunished crime more detrimental to your fort (like some sort of crime infestation, in the end dwarfs simply aren't motivated to be lawfull anymore cause there isn't anything motivating them) and b) a justice system less detrimental to your fortress (unless you choose some SOB as your sheriff and such, wich also means choices like that should have even more impact on the rest).

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How did that happen?

Do you have the combat report from it? Would love to read what happened.

Btw, i have a mule that was hit in the head and upper body by a fire imp (they both are in red) and the mule now constantly falls in and out of consciousness and is stunned every day or so, luckily one dwarf had the heart to adopt the critter (with easy level up in animal care as a result)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: HELP! I lost some vermin...
« on: July 01, 2008, 12:54:06 am »
That's what I thought at first, but then why would they still be shown in the Status/Animal listing?

Even odder, after restarting the game (having exitted to post that query; the fortress is old enough to really bog my system down  :'( ) they miraculously reappeared in the Status/Stocks list under 'Small Live Animals.'   They definitely weren't there previously, 'cos I looked several times.  Now that I can (z)oom to each one I've discovered they're all owned by one of my Elite Marksdwarves.  Even though they're still listed as "Not Tame."     They also don't show up in that dwarve's inventory ... and I've also checked the contents of he coffer and cabinet in their room.  Hmmm... maybe they're stashed in his backpack as munchies?  Gotta check that...

I just want to know where they are so that I know they ain't gonna give anyone bad thoughts... as my uber-popular Mayor lost an argument with a waterfall recently and tempers are....  well...  very short.   ::)

Is your recordkeeper any good? (i would assume yes cause it levels up very quickly, just to be sure though)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Ow Carp, eh crap, NO SAND!?! (tweak Q.)
« on: June 30, 2008, 02:35:45 pm »
Hiya,

I started a new fortress just now, got everything nice and running, forges coming up (the whole reason I played this one!), and there seems to be not a tiny bit of sand!

Now I am the type of guy to kick out these little (well little, big) problems with tweak, but I do not know or cannot seem to find out how to create sand using tweak...

Are you absolutely sure? Can you see somewhere a sandy wall or something? Sometimes sand is found layers beneath the surface, my current fortress seemed to have no sand, until i simply found black sand when digging. Just reveal the map and look very closely, i'm sure you'll find it. (remember to not save the revealed map though)

What i do is dig, built doors, place doors, built x coffins, turn off all labors, turn hauling on when idly waiting, lock door behind whoever places coffins, rinse and repeat. My forts usually don't last long.  :(

Correctly working pressure plates plus the option that they invert the state of what needs to be switched or that they switch to positive or that they switch to negative regardless of the state of what needs to be switched. Same with levers. (think of the posibilities)

Question: can the tile feeding the magma to your forge be covered with bars or a grate?

I saved my game just before an ambush (accidentally). When i reloaded it up the first thing that heppens is the ambush is spotted and the mason who sees them is massacred and sent flying across the map.

I dont really care much... seeing how he was going out to FISH instead of building my second wall line. So I ingore his death and draft my military, all of who are relatively experienced wrestlers but have no armour, except for one dwarf fully fitted out in adamantine. I send the armoured dwarf out first and he kills a few gobbos, but I notice he is taking an exceptionally long time to do it, I look at him and he's unwounded but then notice in his inventoy he is holding neither the adamantine shield OR his spear (which I had assigned him to get).

Dumbstruck, I look through his inventory more closely and find that he is holding TWO backpack, one on his upper body (where it should be) and another... in his hand.... I turn on combat reports and am flooded with:

"The Elite Guard Commander strikes at the goblin in the upper body with his swordfish leather backpack."
"The shot glances away"

This continues for about 3 pages until ANOTHER ambush shows up.. this time with pikemen. The pikeman and hammermen all swarm on top of him and eventually cut him down.

I was... well.. there isnt any way to describe it. I couldn't believe he had chosen to carry a backpack into battle which contained 3 berries over a shield and spear.

Needless to say the next sequence of keys was Control-Alt-Delete-T-(Click)-Delete-Enter

I had one fight with a -narrow leather shoe-, actually she managed to kill of an entire building filled with goblins with nothing but her shoe, i think i did make her a proficient wrestler at embark though.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Supports vs Walls
« on: June 27, 2008, 08:45:25 am »
Ah thanks, I just found the table on the wiki and i never knew about levels beyond legendary (wich have quite an increase on the percentage of creating masterpieces, i asume this also includes architectural masterpieces). Highest is legendary +5 at 29000 xp, so better construct even more supports so that i'm sure he reaches that level before building permanent architectural buildings.

EEEEK! NO WAY!

first of all, farms need to be irrigated more often. sometimes it takes years, but sooner or later they need a fresh swoop of water. (if you keep it at 1/7 or 2/7 ALL the time, it works, too)

secondly using buckets is HIGHLY inefficient, and ties up the dwarves doing it. they could be drinking alcohol in the meantime, or even do something productive.

and last but not least... BUCKETS? in the name of everything that makes you drunk, buckets?!? i mean... we have mechanisms! and floodgates! and pumps! MACHINERY! with lots of moving parts!

and you want to use a retro-style bucket?

whats next? being nice to elves?

pfffffft. yes, thats it. i can only pfffffft at your suggestion.

:( i like elves for their wooden crafts  :(

 ;)

Does anywone roughly know the amount of supports that need to be built for a dwarf to attain legendary architecture skill? I'm currently training one via supports, but it does seem to take quite awhile from him to go from novice to one level above it.
