DF General Discussion / These are very tolerant elves...
« on: July 28, 2008, 12:34:43 am »
While trying to get some damned elven traders off of my map (they carpet bombed the framerate for some damn reason), I took the obvious immediate means to eliminate them: trade them some leather items.

You know what? They were pleased with the trading!!!

What in the name of all that is fruity, uppity, and elvish is up with that?

I'm going to try trading a log to them next. (edit) Hmmm, yes, the log managed to offend them, but not the leather clothing. That is... queer.

I've been watching videos on the Periodic Table of Videos while I play, lately.

Chemistry nerds are the best kind of nerds.

This.

Rick Astley looks so very out of place there.

I like that it actually has "mechanisms" in the name.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: GHAAAARGH!!! PARTIES!
« on: July 27, 2008, 02:32:11 am »
Ive actually found that parties are the worst thing for a fortress short of a flood of water or lava.

Build nice wide hallways for the main traffic of your fortress, the most well trafficed of them drop some platinum statues in, dont even designate them anything. Make a nice huge (say 20x20) dining area and fill it with seats, tables, and carved (engraved) areas. Those two things alone (along with optional private bedrooms) are the best way to keep your dwarves in "always extatic mood".

"My wife has been hacked to pieces, and I was forced to eat my own cat... nothing could wrench my soul from this state of despai... HOLY DAMN THAT'S A NICE STATUE! My life is complete! I'm so very happy!!!"

The lesson here is that if we would place one large aluminum statue in every homeless shelter of the world, they'd all be rolling around ecstatically on the floor, too enraptured in their own bliss to remember to eat the free soup or claim some new, clean, free donated clothing.

They act like Macaques  8)

they make grim trade goods though

They charge into a complete massacre and get their skins made into shoes while their meat and tallow is cooked into a solid biscuity ingot of pure atherosclerosis?

What's so magical about electrum? Electrum isn't very special. Hell, its popularity in the past was largely due to people being too primitive to know how to smelt pure silver or gold from naturally occurring mixtures of the two. About the only remarkable thing about electrum is the name sounds pretty cool.

Leafless trees wouldn't grow, though!

What would look positively evil is an old, gnarled, oak tree sort of shape, covered loosely with large, daggerlike needle foliage.

DF Bug Reports / Re: Population Cap Not Working? 39e

Well I've just had my own first problem with pop cap not working, since (with a population cap setting of 20) I had over 20 dwarves when the dwarven caravan came... and shortly after it left I received another 8 immigrants that I had clearly set as being unwelcome.

Perhaps your mayor just wants to lay in bed next to her dining table and endlessly shovel cakes into her engorged, distended stomach?

Is her name Oprah?

DF Bug Reports / Re: Demon gets around (39e)
« on: July 25, 2008, 10:41:11 pm »
In order to, say, fly over a channel, fliers need to be able to have a non-flying path to their target on the other side of the channels. Crazy, yet true.

Giant Eagles and such, which just fly around randomly, aren't held back by such restrictions, at least when just... flying around randomly.

This would seem to bring up an amusing conundrum in that the demon cannot leave the pits if it specifically wants to go someplace or do something outside... but if it decides to take a jolly wandering flight it may find itself leaving them at some point along the way.

This is terrifically arcane... demons who cannot leave their prison unless they aren't trying to.

Lol

You talk like you think he takes his reviews seriously

Well it's also just plain easier to take cheap shots at, say, Halo 7

Yahtzee is not a serious reviewer, he's an entertainer. He doesn't do thorough, even-handed analysis of a game's merits and downfalls, he just vomits out first impressions as a stream-of-consciousness narrative peppered with sarcasm.

His reviews are a series of kneejerks about things the viewers are most likely to relate to, agree with, and enjoy a good, mean joke about. They're also about games that a big fat percentage of people watching are likely to be familiar with, for the sake of entertainment value.

Not only is a review devoid of potential to do any good for DF, but a DF review is devoid of potential to be worthwhile to his publisher. Were I him, I wouldn't bother when there's someone out there spending untold millions on another AAA title that I can tear into the myriad flaws and shallowness of to the cathartic delight of the viewers.
