the dorms will only spread to the walls if you have the doors put in.  That said you can designate each as a bedroom and a dwarf will claim an unclaimed room as his own when he needs to sleep, afterward it'll stay his unless you destroy it or remove him from it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Magma and me...
« on: May 07, 2014, 09:14:58 pm »
I've already got a dry moat... it'd be a lot more impressive full of magma...

Ok, I'm sold!  Now to get the materials together.  I'll build the stack first, then the generators.  Figuring out how to pull the magma up past the forges without flooding them or leaving them unpowered should be an interesting challenge.  Either I'll get it to work... or I'll have a magma filled fortress!  ;D

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Magma and me...
« on: May 07, 2014, 07:01:33 pm »
It's a love/hate relationship...
However our most recent fling is putting me in a rather awkward position.  Use burrows (which I have little/no understanding of) for my metal working dwarves, and carving a rail system for moving supplies down to them and goods back up, OR...

Build a pumpstack roughly 150z tall...  Even if I use the 1x3 head-over-tail model that's a BIG stack and a lotta calculations, not to mention about 2 years of construction time if I do nothing else.  Oh and I still have no idea how to power a stack that big...   ::)

They've been doing this for well over a year.  bout 14 months back I was accused of having pirated a game I couldn't even stand the _reviews_ for.  They said they'd turn my Internet connection back on if I signed a confession...

I just told them they'd turn the connection I was paying for back on right then or they could discuss their evidence with my lawyer in the morning.  I was back online 15 minutes later.

Simple fact is, they can't PROVE it was you without seizing your hardware, and even then they'd better actually find the data on the drive.  Why is this necessary? because MAC and IP addressing can be spoofed, or private networks hacked.  At which point I am not culpable under U.S. law for what someone else did as they were effectively stealing my network usage.

In short it's a lot of bluff, bluster, and just a hint of real threat.  Unless you're running a software bootlegging operation they're unlikely to actually attempt to acquire evidence.  You can trust me on that regard, since they have PLENTY of reasons to want a thorough look through my computer.

A simpler question...  Is someone constantly hauling the barrel/pot back and forth to the farms to collect more of the plants?

I get this alert all the time for that reason specifically.

Maybe, but it's the first potential bug I've seen that works in my favor instead of screwing me over.  Which would put it high on Toady's list to fix as opposed to the others, I guess.

DF Modding / Re: Middle Earth Mod - release 3.1

I'd certainly be interested in playing.  fairly useless at modding (no focus/patience for it)

interesting... in that case I could have made the things outta bronze, or copper and saved a lotta work.  I'll chalk it up for the next stack I have to build.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Keas!

once needed almost a whole season for the traders to finish unpacking because Keas would come harrass them.  had never seen any of the birds before they showed up, and never saw any after they left.  Very strange.

DF Suggestions / Re: New clothes wearing layout for fighting.

I'm more disgusted by my military's inability to wear iron boots, personally.  I'd like to see the current flaws in the inventory/uniform system ironed out before Toady goes making it any more complicated.

Course, I think the game could use a LOT of cleaning up in general.

Dear Dorfs,
The Armorer isn't making pots and pans.  put your freaking armor on!  And Where the heck are those idiots with the crossbows??

12
well it was a nice go, but the fort is dead, raiders arrived just as I was starting to get my steel weapons handed out and before I'd even started on the armor.  Doesn't help that my military still doesn't _train_.  Really getting tempted to just push the magma flows up to the surface and glass everything.

Might have been a different fight if my marksdwarves had bothered showing up.  mobilized and stationed them at the bridge, never saw any of them.  Sleazy little ballbiters.

13
Thanks mate, if a dorf can generate the push then all should be well.  This should be simple enough that I can't burn down the fort after all!  lol

Ok, so I've ducked, dodged, and sidestepped the fort killers (bugs) so far and have acquired a magma pool.  Just a few questions about utilizing it before I incinerate my fort...

1.  I'm going to need to bring it up 8 Z-levels which means a pumpstack...
If I pull just from the surface of the magma will it replenish (I also have to push it across half the map once I get it above the cavern systems)  or do I need to drop down a level or two below the surface of the magma?
We're talking about a LOT of steel if I have to use metal, and don't have access to Bauxite or significant glass.  Suggested materials other than Steel so I don't have to delay my military industrial complex any further?
And lastly this pumpstack is going to need 80 power units and I have no idea where I'm gonna get that 12 Z-levels down and no where near moving water.

2.  Once I've gotten it in place will it cool if I turn the pumpstack off?  I don't want obsidian, I want magma forges.
If I don't turn the pumpstack off and the magma doesn't replenish... then what?

As you can probably tell, I get by without massive engineering projects in most of my forts.  Such has usually been the death of my fort as the liquid dynamics never seem to work the way I think they will...

The rush of gasses is the hard part to avoid, at least that's what used to kill my miners when I'd get that far ;)

If you carve a channel that will meet with the upper edge you can extend the flow rather easily.  If you want to tap into it someplace lower...  good luck.  Never had much luck with that myself.
