DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Magma and me...
« on: May 07, 2014, 07:01:33 pm »
It's a love/hate relationship...
However our most recent fling is putting me in a rather awkward position.  Use burrows (which I have little/no understanding of) for my metal working dwarves, and carving a rail system for moving supplies down to them and goods back up, OR...

Build a pumpstack roughly 150z tall...  Even if I use the 1x3 head-over-tail model that's a BIG stack and a lotta calculations, not to mention about 2 years of construction time if I do nothing else.  Oh and I still have no idea how to power a stack that big...   ::)

Ok, so I've ducked, dodged, and sidestepped the fort killers (bugs) so far and have acquired a magma pool.  Just a few questions about utilizing it before I incinerate my fort...

1.  I'm going to need to bring it up 8 Z-levels which means a pumpstack...
If I pull just from the surface of the magma will it replenish (I also have to push it across half the map once I get it above the cavern systems)  or do I need to drop down a level or two below the surface of the magma?
We're talking about a LOT of steel if I have to use metal, and don't have access to Bauxite or significant glass.  Suggested materials other than Steel so I don't have to delay my military industrial complex any further?
And lastly this pumpstack is going to need 80 power units and I have no idea where I'm gonna get that 12 Z-levels down and no where near moving water.

2.  Once I've gotten it in place will it cool if I turn the pumpstack off?  I don't want obsidian, I want magma forges.
If I don't turn the pumpstack off and the magma doesn't replenish... then what?

As you can probably tell, I get by without massive engineering projects in most of my forts.  Such has usually been the death of my fort as the liquid dynamics never seem to work the way I think they will...

DF Gameplay Questions / Now Hospitals??
« on: June 20, 2012, 04:02:20 pm »
ok, so I've established the military is buggy (with the ability to work around) and that I need clothing production within the first year to avoid having dwarven teeth lying everywhere when someone goes berserk with a silver warhammer...

So why are my dwarves putting ALL my thread in the hospital and how the hell do I stop THIS annoying bug?  (They've exceeded the limit I set at the hospital substantially and still grabbing more to store there)

DF Gameplay Questions / Is the military still bugged?
« on: June 19, 2012, 08:29:50 pm »
I only ask since I just watched my entire military get butchered because none of them were smart enough to wear helms, or gloves... or boots.  I checked the uniform I had put together, and they were supposed to be wearing the Bronze armor, and they'd grabbed the breastplates and wooden shields just fine...
Of Course, the fact that they never seemed to train didn't help matters either.  I had to lower the minimum active to 2 (with a full 10 man squad) just to get ANYONE to train.

Real shame, since it was shaping up to be a very nice fort before that little raiding party.  Guess the Gobbos weren't too happy that 3 of their thieves were run down and slaughtered.

A few pointers here as to WTF I'm doing wrong would be nice...  I don't mind losing, but I shouldn't have to slap a label of 'Here lies Stupid' over _every_ military dwarf's tomb

DF Gameplay Questions / I am NOT running a Menagerie
« on: June 19, 2012, 02:08:02 pm »
Is there any way to stop hordes of pet critters from arriving with my migrants?  Or slow the migrants while I'm at it?  I'm spending so much time carving out living quarters that I don't have any opportunity to dig for ore :p

ok, so I'm trying to get a single bar of soap...

Seven workshops later I have the rocknut oil in it's jug, two units of lye... and the soap maker's workshop is telling me this can only take place at a soap maker's workshop..............

I don't mind a game with a learning curve, quite the contrary, I enjoy them, but I don't like it when my own industries tell me they need themselves to do something... that just feels like sabotage.

DF Gameplay Questions / Fort Death

Thanks to the new hauling mechanisms that tell my haulers to take ALL the seeds with them when they go get... one seed.  And ALL my plants to get... one plant.

I'm all ears as to how to get around this new 'feature'  because it's a great big pain in my furry ass.

DF Gameplay Questions / Under Siege by... Dwarves?!?
« on: February 25, 2012, 10:51:42 pm »
That's right, I'm under siege by dwarven migrants.

The little blighters are like locusts and I cannot imagine how badly the mountainhomes must be run for them to ALL come decending upon my little 17 dwarf outpost.   :o

Spring 2nd Year:  My population more than triples.  42 dwarves decended on my little stone crafting operation... ah who am I kidding, I was just clearing the trash outta the freakin hallways :p

Now there is no way I generated that much wealth.  Been a year or so since I've really gotten into a fort, but i isn't like I've struck Adamantite or even gotten my metalworks _started_ I don't have enough diggers or carpenters to get these guys rooms, or even just bed in a repurposed storage yard!  Nevermind the other 30 who arrived with the onset of summer.

Seriously, did someone adjust the migrant calculations?  And to think I used to feel oerwhelmed when 20 would show up lmao.

DF Gameplay Questions / Military Blues
« on: February 25, 2012, 09:08:44 pm »
ok... will someone explain how this military interface is supposed to work and how to actually CREATE orders in the bloody schedule?  I'm tired of losing dwarves and livestock because the soldiers can't be bothered to station themselves where I tell them to even if I activate the flippin squad.

This is the least accessible interface I've ever seen (and I used to program in DOS)  so please, someone throw me a bone here.

DF Gameplay Questions / Soap?
« on: June 14, 2011, 07:10:03 pm »
Ok, I've got tallow and lye, even some ash for good measure...  still can't make soap.  Is this broken or am I missing something brutally simple?

DF Gameplay Questions / Activate the Military.... HOW?
« on: June 14, 2011, 01:38:13 am »
I've dug through the forums, and even did a quick search in case I missed something... but WTF is up with the complete inability to activate my military?  Losing may be fun, but I'd at least like to watch a FIGHT first >:(

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Stockpile question with .31.03
« on: April 15, 2010, 10:16:47 pm »
ok, two ore stockpiles one large one small.  The large one acting as a catchall for ore while the smaller recieves ore I'm about to have smelted... little problem however with my dwarves constantly running to the larger stockpile, looking around lost and wandering off, only to come back and repeat later.  nothing ever actually gets moved to the second stockpile.  Since bug reports have been farmed out to another site, I'm left asking here if this is something anyone else has encountered.  Thanks in advance, and if I come across too many more major issues I'll just go back to 40D :p

DF Gameplay Questions / woah buddy
« on: March 09, 2010, 05:19:04 am »
ok, I used to think I was pretty good with this game, nothin fancy but a pretty solid player.  I've been picking it back up lately to rehash my feel for the interface and management etc.  Now the more I try to stay ahead of the migrant swarms the faster I fall behind and I'm left kinda scratchin my head askin WTF I'm doin wrong.  I'm using the current version (as I was back when I remember being much better) and I'm not even getting a chance to scout around for ore before I'm getting migrant swarms that push me back into the cycle of bedrooms and trying to assign haulers.  This makes the usual push into the military a touch difficult :p

Maybe I'm just a little outta touch... I dunno.  I'll keep tinkering regardless, but I dun remember gettin 20-30 migrants in the first/second waves.  I don't even remember gettin half that

General Discussion / Saints VICTORY!!
« on: February 07, 2010, 10:36:13 pm »
Title says it all.  Helluva game, still have a headache from the first half, but it was ALL worth it to watch the guy everyone wants to treat like the GOD of football throw a pick and walk off the field trying not to cry like a baby.

You haven't lived until you've had to bail out the bottom floor of your fortress because your dwarves forgot to pull a lever to stop the waterflow up from the cistern.
