DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / War Dogs!

This may be kinda random, but I just  noticed that my wardog that took out a kobold thief now has a name despite still being 'stray'  I knew other critters could get named, but I didn't realize my critters could as well.  thought that was just awesome :)

Hello folks, it's me again... is there any reason why a well that insists it's active would have problems being flagged as a water source?  it's 2-3 z-levels above the water, but that's never been a problem before.  Wondering if the rock at the bottom ofthe wellshaft could be getting in the way....  cause it's a clear drop.  Any suggestions about the problem or a way to fix it would be awesome, cause I'm rather partial to this fort, and I'd like to be able to tend the wounded without going outside  :(

I've tinkered, I've learned, and I've enjoyed the game, but I still seem to have a hard time keeping things under control as the fortress grows.  I end up with most of my dwarves sitting around doing nothing.  And as  you might guess I'm not exactly a big industry builder.  I dunno, I guess I'm just not happy with how things develop.  bleh, I'm not even sure whatI'm askin for now... :S

I've noticed my dwarves spend a LOT of time running back and forth when they have a task, like they're confused about which way to go or what it is they're doing. Running up and down my hallways with a log on their shoulder for example instead of carrying it to the furnace...  Kinda leaves me scratchin my head because I can't understand why they're doing it.  It's not even a long hall :p

Ya'll probably don't remember me, I wouldn't be surprised, I wasn't terribly memorable... but I'm back ;)

And with a question... anyone know how to get Tweak to work with Vista?  Don't bother telling me Vista sucks, I know, but it's my only _legal_ OS atm so I kinda gotta work around it

DF Modding / Tiny tilesets

Why are tilesets so darn small?  It's a real pain to see anything on the 1280x400 ones, and some of the lower res aren't much better...

Can someone point me in the direction of a nontiny tileset?  I'm honestly gettin a migraine from eyestrain, had to go back to basic ASCII

It's yer not-so-friendly Demon/troublemaker again.

was considering a design scheme, and wanted to know what some of the rest of ya'll thought about it.
Using a ramp spiral to separate my living areas workshops etc.  each area getting it's own level and branching in a different direction than the others.  Not really sure how to even attempt a diagram anyone would be able to make heads or tails out of, though, so just kinda bear with me.

The first layer running to the north, second to the east, third south, fourth west, and then back to north again.  comments and suggestions would be appreciated, since I'm looking at the idea in an attempt to combat noise waking my dwarven sleepers.

Well... I HAD an Axelord....  guess he was desperate for a bath, cause he dove into the well/cistern.  3Zs deep and about 10x10.  (makes another note for his NEXT fortress, well needs to be farther away from the barracks as sparring dwarves will fall in  :p)

Any other recommendations for avoiding that kinda thing?  Cause now I got a tomb and no body to put into it (no way to drain the cistern)

Is it bad that the majority of my military are runnin around with old bone crossbows and seem to be quite skilled at obliterating goblin ambushes/assaults?

The longer I play the more I wonder why I have three AxeDwarves beating the heck outta my Fort Guard...  any recommendations for an expanded military?  I'm havin a hard time keepin everyone at work  :p

ok, a few things... starting with dwarves suffocating in apparently random places...  Like in bed, or in a coffin.  the question being HOW, or WHY??  Don't get me wrong, I'm glad these (apparent) idiots removed themselves from the genepool, but it's still more than a little confusing.

Secondly, I can't seem to train dogs with some fortresses... trainers just won't do it, and no, I'm not tryin to train pups

But I have to say ya'll have already been a godsend for teaching my brilliant little slaves... I mean dwarves how not to rush out into a fight and get turned into slightly oversized porcupines

BTW what is Happy Fun Stuff and why is it called that?  Or does HFS really stand for somethin else?  ;)

What is it used for?  I dunno how many forts I've started and this is the first time I've found the stuff.  can't smelt it, so I'm at something of a loss since it appears to be ore....

DF Suggestions / Ranged weapons

I don't know about firearms, but an extended selection of ranged weapons would be nice, especially if we can set the secondary weapon for our troopers.  Throwing axes, in particular would be nice.  Hurled weapons in general were a very effective tactic to soften an infantry charge or defenders you were charging.

I'm almost certain someone's already suggested this, but I didn't see it, so I figured I'd drop my .02 in
