DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Your starting build?
« on: February 28, 2009, 05:25:16 pm »
half warhammer
half shield

seems to be the only way I can survive my first wolves.

137
I don't have the new one.  Maybe wait for warlord to finish his turn or see if Qloos or Duke 2.0 have it.

138
Migrants!

1 Woodcutter
2 Animal Caretakers
1 Furnace Operator
1 Weaver
1 Fish Dissector

And about the guildhall plans, they are ridiculously huge.  Boksi's Hall would be the size of half the town, though it looks small on paper.  No need to resubmit them though, as I just use them for a reference on the proportions of things.

139
I got the 'Rusty has died of thirst' announcement and had to search out the body. Ah well.  Vieto can take on the apprentice or wait for an immigrant with some skill to show up.

140

Nish: We have enough hands now to finish your hall.

Boksi: And about time, now here's my booze for barter.

Nish: How about that roast there instead?

Boksi: This little roast? When all this drink is up for grabs?

Nish: Right, that will be my fee. We'll begin in the morning!

Tradebeard: Aye boy, you're right.  There is a dead dwarf on the roof.  Bricked himself into the chimney from the looks of it. But I recognize those shoes.. what tragedy this day brings!  Rusty is dead!

-The dwarves gather for Rusty's internment, the Haulers Guild carries the body to an Orthoclase coffin-

Reg: Fitting that we bury him here, in the magma channel. He worked so hard to found this hall, and now he rest in its fiery belly.

Vucar: And what of his Guild?  I'd place a bet that his apprentice Ingish has never touched an anvil.

Reg: Who can say, or know.

-The human caravan arrives-

Tradebeard: At last.  What kept you last year?

Coni: Would *you* travel for two months into the wilds, just to buy a handful of rock figurines and rat skulls?  Speaking of which, lets see your best wares.

Tradebeard: Well.  A shame you missed last year when we had goods to sell, I'm afraid..

Nish: I have something that might interest them!

-He pulls out a fine roast, oozing with syrup and sugar.  The trader's eyes glaze over with hunger and the trading commences-

-Nil speaks up at the fountain-

Nil: My friends, as you know there have been a few accidents recently.  Nutsy will recover from hers but we may not be as lucky next time.  Danger abounds and as poor Rusty learned the hard way, facing it alone can be tragic.  I have four war dogs, waiting for masters.  With a trusted friend at your side you can once again feel secure.

Other news:

Nish bought 3 iron bucklers for the Fighters, in exchange for a guard posted ouside the Construction Hall. Nish also bought 6 barrels of milk.  General supplies were bought for the whole fort.

Allright the assignments are in:

Tacticians get Bowyer, Ranger
Construction gets Woodcutter, Peasant
Traders get Craftsdwarf (forgot to mention him)
Fighters get Lye Maker and Cheese Maker, may they make cheesy lye out of our foes.
Haulers get a peasant
Fishers get Fish Dissector
Farmers get a Cook and Brewer
Glassmakers get a Cook

The Traders Guild is up for improvements, mainly a proper living quarters and a workshop floor.

I just discovered DwarfManager, that should take a lot of the headache out of switching these guys labors.  Thanks for the layout Boksi, it will be scaled down a bit but still up to specs.

Report:

Nutsy was sent to mine down to the magma.  She was hit by a fireball upon entry.  Luckily she destroyed the imp and was carried to bed.  Vucar Vodlolor is very upset for her condition, it appears they are lovers.

The dwarves have decided to erect a common hall in the center of town, where Guildmasters can meet and the unfortunate can find a place to sit with their meals.  Nothing extravagant, mind you.

The Trappers have assembled quite a menagerie, and have begun taming beast and chaining them behind their hall.

Thee Guilds have seen great improvement in the last season.  The Construction Guild has smoothed a fine dining hall and placed an alabaster statue above their entrance.  The Glassmakers and Metalsmiths guild used their common interest to erect their main halls and magma rooms.  The Construction guild did a large part of the masonry and has been promised glass windows and worked metals.

The Traders guild has done quite well with its artistry.  Their newest recruit has been spinning silk webs into rope and bags.  They have funded several sections of road to be built in the town.

Nil has set two traps in the shaft to the magma pool.  The Haulers have agreed to pump magma into the new channel once the imps have been dealt with.

New migrants:

Bowyer
Woodcutter
Ranger
Fish Dissector
Cheese Maker
Cook
Cook
Brewer
Lye Maker
Peasant

DF Community Games & Stories / Re: Nilarzes, The Dwarven Insane Asylum

I've been getting to know some of my fellow companions a bit better. Ametsala, our smith appears to have some sort of spear fetish. Spears aren't really my thing, but it seemed to spark an interest with Smid. Three days ago he asked Ametsala what he liked most about spears and he hasn't shut up since.

'Spears are sooo great'
'Yeah and I love how one end is pointy'
'And you can hold them!'

Fortis Melbilgeb founds the Fishers Guild!  He is eager to have safe access to the underground pool.

new recruits:

Trappers get bone carver
Farmers get planter
Haulers get peasant
Fighters get fish dissector
Traders get craftsdwarf
Metalsmiths get soap maker

The dwarven caravan came.  Tradebeard did quite well with the transaction, we now own an anvil, copper ax, new cage, assorted seeds, barrels, yellow zircon, and more cat meat.

The Glassmakers funded an anvil for the Metalsmiths in exchange for a magma source beneath their guild and help erecting their hall.

145

-The Guildmasters gather around the well-

Vucar: I have important news!  Our geological report has revealed some useful underground features.

Rusty: Magma, praise the miners!

Nil: Whats this?  Trolls? Snakemen?! Creatures in the magma?!? And I with no cages ready!

Tradebeard: At ease Nil, there is time for many preparations.  And as the humans never did show, I suggest we begin work.

--------

Now that we have fish Fortis will get the first fishery dwarf.

excellent.  I will use the proceeds from your prepared meals to buy an axe then.

Creative Projects / Re: Sci fi ascii game brainstorming.
« on: February 27, 2009, 01:56:27 pm »
Thanks for all the good input guys.

As for programming I've really only messed with python.  The NumericalPython library is a pretty fast implementation of multi dimensional arrays though.

Most my game work is actually 3D, where the physics library handles all the collision detection.

I'd like to imagine a hypothetical game where the ascii graphics were more of an independent represetation of the game entities.  So maybe the collision bodies are polygons running in the background and the display tries to represent what happens in ascii.

Rashvir Rashgurkeskal has joined with the Farmers Guild!  She likes to eat plump helmet spawn.

Anyone know the translation of her name?  Deathstar Deathsomething..

The Glassmakers Guild gets 1 gem setter
The Construction Guild gets 1 untrained peasant
The Tacticians get a Dyer

Currently the Farmers have the most members at 3

Regarding your layouts;
I'll adapt the designs to fit, when it comes to that.  No problem in thinking big but remember we are still a poor settlement and a lot of Guilds are clamoring for improvements.

General Report:

The human trader is due any day now, but we have some decent wares; prepared meals from the Farmers and copper ore crafts from the Glassmakers.

We have no anvil, nor axe.  Dabar of the Fighters could use a weapon, she's already a great wrestler. We are at war with the elves and face the usual menaces, though the untamed wilds are secure enough thanks to Nil.

We have yet to search for the magma, but will begin taking samples of the surrounding bedrock.  Rusty has suggested that we drill down into the rock face to the southwest.

The Trappers Guild now has; 1 Giant Eagle; 1 Deer; 1 Fox; 3 two humped Camels, and 4 new puppies.  They plan to build a kennel over the summer.

Nutsy has been busy making bone crossbows and bolts, when she has had a break from mining duty.  She plans on erecting an archery target in the guild.

Those who requested dwarves in the future, I will remember.  I've also set the pop cap up to 30 and turned the desert into sand.  I will try to keep the dmfa map updated: http://www.mkv25.net/dfma/map-4806-staticbasements-sum-453

Long last the Prime Rampart, Staticbasements, and the Shaken Guilds!

149
Cool, I got an Eagle. They can be tamed, right?

Updates are coming alot faster than I expected.

The fort is running at 200 fps, a bunch can happen when I unpause it.

How about a hunting eagle?

150
The second everyone has a bed, we get more migrants:

Rusty Rulducim founds the Metalsmiths Guild.  She likes Iron.

Interestingly, our group was genned with the name The Shaken Guilds.  I love it!

More migrants are up for grabs, feel free to join into one of the established guilds too.

Other News:

We have found the aquifer and installed a well.
The Fighters Guild has been started with equipment racks and a cabinet.
The Glassmakers Guild found a large native copper vein in their digsite.
