DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: April 26, 2010, 01:43:43 pm »
Finally got a good start, nice walled in cavern settlement, good industries movin along, about to bring some magma into the smelters...funny, should've seen a caravan by now.  And why haven't i gotten migrants in the last six seasons?  I go to check the civ screen

...and i'm apparently out of dwarves.  No more migrants.  On the civ screen, my dwarven civ has "no important leaders".
More dwarves will never come, we are all that's left!

goddammit.

any soap in the fortress?

So it seems generally acknowledged that the underground is going to be much more lethal now than in previous versions.  Also, there's now an EquipmentDwarf position to help designate armor assignments, etc.

This brings to mind an actual question that i don't think i've seen answered:

Can you assign your civilian dwarves armor that they'll continue to wear even if they're not "active" in the military?

Having your civilian dwarves wear leather clothing around seems like it could increase their survivability in a very reasonable way...  Anyone know?

A week!  A week!  one small, week, such blessedly short duration!  Be still my heart.

Quick poll, does knowing that it's ~7 days to DF2010 make the waiting
a) easier
or
b) harder
?

choose one.

Yea, I've noticed he tends to update the devlog every two days instead of every day. It could also just be that he is really busy with the final stretch of the release.

it's that second possibility that's making me fidget.

6
I feel like the devlog hasn't been updated in a while, and that makes me antsy

if 40d was 9/6/2008, and it's 3/9/2010, does that mean we're over 1.5 years without a release?

For a community supported program(mer), that's simply astounding.  go toady!

On the other hand, if you were to graph DF's complexity vs. time between releases, i bet we're around the point it gets scary steep.  Wonder if there's a plan...

Hehe nope, ive been programming for 12 years, ive only recently started learning sdl. :)

[...

Ive done multicore coding before, i know its very possible and easy to do(if you know what your doing that is), but it does take alot of work to setup. But its not that hard.

Ok, if you've been programming for twelve years, then you know that there's a big difference between "setting something up" and "retrofitting existing code." One is straightforward, maybe even simple.  the other is a signficant undertaking depending on the complexity & design of the original.

...and if you've got that kind of experience, then you should have an idea of the complexity & design of the DF codebase just based off the bug reports we're seeing.

Better yet, if you've been in the industry, you know that the two worst words in the world are "legacy code"

And we know Toady's legacy is already secure! :D [/pun]

BTW, hats off to Baughn for his incredible work on this thankless task.

GOOD JAEORB

because if there's anything magma can't do, it's move quickly.  nothing says "flood the world with fiery doom" like taking about 4 years to do it.

I also notice Footkerchief has been noticably quiet on whether or not he's one of the early testers :)

if i may engage in a bit of inductive reasoning...

1) Floating gaseous creatures
   a) ...from deep in the caves!
   b) capable of being lured outside.

2) the new raws have "soul" tags
    a) ... which currently serve as "containers" for the mental attributes.

3) poisons!  contaminants!

from 1, 2, and 3, i will make an inductive guess that a new type of FUN we will encounter is... MIND FLAYERS! :D

I wonder how he chose the testers?  he said they were "old hands"

maybe he sorts everyone by their forum post count & picks the top 3 or something.  Talk about galvanizing community participation!

Am i the only one who thinks dwarven epidemics sound absolutely terrible?  I mean, these dwarves are so goddamn dumb.  Anyone watched in vain as all of your dwarfs decide now's a great time to get a drink, sleep, or go on break when you really need that lever pulled before the advancing orcs get -- oh, too late.

Having the traders bring the mumps for the 8th time and lay out half the dwarfs in the fortress and bring things to even more of a standstill just, ugh.  That doesn't really sound like fun.  or Fun.

Who was that who said that every time he gets up and doesn't see a devlog, he dies a little inside?  Yeah...

Also, correct me if i'm wrong, but Toady hasn't been taking his end-of-month weekend days since December, right?  I'm gonna start really worrying about him burning out if this dev cycle takes much longer :(

GO TOADY GO.

...which means you will have about 500 statues of triangles, cheeses, donkeys, and that shitty artifact leather thong littering your courtyards so that you could get 10 -statues- of dwarves for your mausoleum.

the beat goes on, i guess?  Something to be said for leaving things to the imagination, lest we demand control of our newfound specificity.
