I've definitely made a 4 story drop as a sort of "Trial by Ordeal" ...

The goal was to see who lived and who did not. If you did not live, you were clearly impure and had no place in my society.

If you did, the second ordeal was surviving recovery. If you did not survive that, it was the will of the gods.

... but I had the luckiest living citizens ever!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Sieges. Bad or good thing?

Good, except for the mess. The game needs some SERIOUS dumping changes (like the ability to DUMP entire groups, or dump based on a keyword, like "narrow" or something) ...

... especially good since the sieges kill more than the Superbeasts.

I have an all wood fort (complete with an outdoor industrial complex enclosed in wood) ... and I wanted to see it burn, and a dragon wandered in to help me out, but NOOO... a Competent Marskman with a lucky shot pegs an eye and then his stomach as my band of 10 just-trained Axemen on border patrol wander up and finish the job while the dragon is vomiting.

*sigh*

:)

Yeah, it was the craftsdwarves' guild ... I made a bunch of crud, so hopefully that's enough... but I've already decide to run this fort into the ground anyway, 2 weeks of running it at work is enough, it's time to MAKE IT HISTORY!

It's just good info for the future  ;)

So if I just make some crafts, the mayor will shut up?  ;)

Negative. If they got removed, my mayor is on crack...

Pull lever, retract bridge, everything on bridge falls to death, if you blocked your entrance with it, the goblins/etc can't get in unless they can fly, and you can now shoot them in the face with bolts of doom at your leisure.

It was actually a bridge off a mountainside, but I've dug a 11 Z-level drop (it's HILARIOUS, when they fall off of it... the body parts come flying up the shaft for 3 or 4 Z-levels up... and some of them have sideward momentum so they land outside the trap... it WAS going to be 10 level drop, but I struck gold on the 10th level, so there's a nice open space on the 10th level...  :) )

Haha, so, I decide to incite some insanity in my work fort by building a giant bridge and dropping 20 champions to their potential death or at least... serious injury... and as most of them are friends with each other, well, yeah...

So, a lot of unhappy campers, and one of the survivors was nursed back to health, and I forgot to take him off duty, and so he was standing on a bridge with 3 other guys... goes into a tantrum, tries to start a fist-fight, is dodged... but the poor fellow dodges off the edge of the bridge and falls to his death.

The tantruming champion then, angry at killing a friend he just intended to slug, destroys the bridge he is standing on, falls 5 stories, lives... (albeit with a broken hip and upper leg) ... and is facing 2 hammerstrikes from the hammerer for breaking the bridge.

The most awesome part is the hammerer is asleep, so the dwarf has to lay there bleeding and vomiting, crippled... waiting for what will likely be his death sentence.

Good God I love this game  :)

So, I take it trolls don't drown?

I flooded the pit I had one trapped in, and there he is, dancing around in it... and he has been for two seasons, now.

I have a lot of autonomy, dual monitors, and a ridiculously overpowered machine (for what I need it for) ... it works out pretty well. I run DF, drag it to one monitor, and keep it under a terminal window. I tab over every so often to make sure the little buggers haven't offed themselves.

It's neat because normally I would've gotten bored with a stable fort, but running it at work allows it to develop a much longer history.

At its current population (192) ... it has hit the point where food is no longer increasing, but it is not decreasing either (though I am training 2 more cooks and more farmers, so that is liable to change) ...

One third of the population is military (66 champions and some other random stuff) ... but just one of them (with full legendary weapon, wrestler, shield, and armor) is enough to slaughter the entire goblin siege...

It's madness!

So, yeah, I need to tweak the goblin stats so that I can start culling my herd a little bit and getting epic battles instead of one champion running into a herd of 10 crossbowmen.

(I also got lucky, my 1st artifact was a suit of copper plate mail. Not too exciting on its own, but the legendary armorer my 1st year ruled... wound up with an artifact bone spear, too, which is neat (but not terribly powerful) ... and a QUERN AND A MILLSTONE!

(whose actual use is just dropping in a noble's room so that I can make the room a bedroom / office / dining room and have them not whine about what a toilet the place is, even though it is a toilet, they just have a wonderful millstone (unpowered) sitting in their room... nobles really are retarded)

(( I just got tired of killing them, because that requires me paying attention to what is going on in the game, which I can't do while I am at work... normally I just ignore them and let them go crazy and kill whoever or imprison whoever... ))

This became much more lengthy than I intended... (slow day at work  ;) )

Is there a way to just outright attack the elves?

I've been leaving a fort running in the background at work, it's been about 20 years, and I've decided that the ground must run red with the blood of the elven betrayers.

... but all I can do is cut down trees to tick them off, yeah? I just want to massacare their caravan  :(

On the subject of pumping, I actually had a fort with a nice waterfall from a brook, a nice 8 level drop...

... I set 4 pumps up, and just pump em year round, it's a great way to train the immigrants...  :)

My forts tend to have plenty of legendary pump operators...

They even "dry pump" in the winter... EHEH!
