DF Gameplay Questions / Re: When does the action start?
« on: May 16, 2008, 05:21:00 am »
I stopped reading this thread like a third of a page ago, so I'm sorry that this isn't a direct response to things, but like.
It seems like the problem perceived by folks is that the game is too easy.
It seems that the standard solution is to place somewhat arbitrary restrictions on one's self.
It seems that the counter-argument to this is that the game should provide them for the player.

But, like. The game is moddable.

As said, Toady shouldn't have to be bothered with the minutia of balancing. The game's in alpha, more is coming, etc etc.
We as the community of users have every ability to MAKE hard mode--distributable, standardized, quantified, totally NOT arbitrary hard mode. Make it a big thing. Start a wiki and a committee. Do releases of new files.

It's not the same thing as just 'no plump helmets' or other restrictions we place on ourselves. I mean really, why not? Moddable alpha. It's like a blank canvas made of nifty.

I don't know quite if I'm coherent, or if I'm restating anything, but I just invested like fifteen minutes into this train of thought and don't want to lose it. So I'm posting it even though I probably look silly. I'm going to go to bed. I'll edit it tomorrow if necessary, but right now, it's after 3 and I keep trying to dig channels with the 'build cabinet' command.

tl;dr: WE SHOULD MAKE HARD MODE AND THEN EVERYONE CAN BE HAPPY K? :3
Edit: I lied about waiting. Post was filled with eye-twisting extra whitespace.

This forum is supernaturally friendly, helpful and welcoming....It's unnerving.

Am I on the same internet?

That'd make sense. I'll give it a shot next chance I get.

Oi, that was quick--thankee.

Hmm. I'll cancel the orders out and see what happens.

Edit: Oh!! Can't make animal traps after all. And I opted to use traps in lieu of cats...uh-oh.

Thanks for your help! That solved it. =)

DF Gameplay Questions / How darn long does procrastination last?
« on: May 13, 2008, 04:56:00 pm »
My woodworker is 'occasionally given to procrastination' and needs to quit sitting on his beard and make those darn animal traps before the lizards eat all our food. We'd also like some chairs for the dining room.

How long are we going to have to wait? Any predictions?

DF Suggestions / Re: Dwarf Fortress MMO???
« on: May 20, 2008, 07:50:00 pm »
I'd play an online Dwarf Fortress. It'd eat my life.

I'm not sad if it never comes, though. I'd not go so far as to suggest it.

MAYBE something that allows for multiple users on their own network? So you could have a joint effort, or have rival fortresses on opposite sides of the world map. That'd be maybe nifty.

But I like it how it is, with the solitude. =)

And the undead sharks.

DF General Discussion / Re: Toady's programming abilities.
« on: May 16, 2008, 04:52:00 am »
I'd add on to the fawning praise, but that seems very cliche.

Instead, I am going to offer a blood sacrifice tomorrow night. He is, after all, a mortal god. I do not think my neighbor will notice that her cat is missing for quite some time, so all in all, it's all simply dependent on if Toady will accept offerings of cat blood.

Also, I am dreadfully curious. I understand that Today is a PHD in Mathematics--which scares me to death, personally. What I wanna know is where he studied, and what his background in programming is. Like, outside the practical stuff that we all love and stay up with until 3am instead of studying for midterms. Self-taught? Because if he's self-taught, I'm entirely inspired to give self-teaching another shot.

And if not, I'll totally try again anyway, because he and his work are just that awesome.
