Nutmeg. It's an unpleasant and long-lasting hallucinogen. Now add DF. The only thing going for it is its general availability.

I actually have seen large earthenware sculptures made. Large enough they can't be moved unfired, and the kiln has to be built up around it for it to be fired in place.

Unfeasible, but with porous earthenware, possible.

Since you guys insist on dredging up the topic, how about some items that haven't been mentioned a hundred times over:
Horseshoes, fastening buttons, universities, dams, tidal mills, (incendiary) grenades, force pumps, cement/concrete, sausages, tooth implants, gilding, paints & veneers, and Artesian wells.

Granted, the last is due to limitations on how the game handles pressure and aquifers, and some of the others are minutiae, but nonetheless...
...you can be a lot more original here.

I forgot to post here about how much I enjoy this comic.
I kinda wish you were more regular with the updates, but the same could be said about over half the webcomics I read, so it doesn't bother me too much.

Keep up the good work!

Bridgebuilding is seriously out of topic here. Take it to another room.

yeah I figured they needed a weakness. I'm not providing an in-story reason for their iron "allergy", though. It will intentionally go unexplained.

Iron weaponry should leave really nasty wounds on goblins... like big, smoking burning scars filled with coagulated blood.
If you really wanted an explanation, though, you could call it a species-wide mutation in the hemoglobin gene. The mutation would cause red blood cells to catalyze metallic iron and turn it into free iron in the bloodstream. This would then cause immediate cell death in the wound and iron overload throughout the rest of the body.

If you don't want an explanation, then that's okay too.

P.S. I actually did research on this. It's still fantasy pseudoscience, though.

Started a fort, hit "Play Now" (for the Comp. medical skills).
Fisherdwarf promptly forms two grudges, including with the leader.
Accidentally assigned my leader/woodcutter as sheriff.
Fisherdwarf gets upset, tantrums, and kills leader's cat.
Leader assigns beating.
Fisherdwarf promptly hacked to bits.
Leader decides to hold a party in the dining room.

Moral: Don't be an ass to the guy with the ax.

DF Suggestions / Possible Solution for Unkillable Undead
« on: May 05, 2010, 06:29:47 am »
Undead and many forgotten beasts (such as those composed of stone or gemstone) are near-impossible to kill mainly because:
A: They lack living parts, and require decapitation, bisection, or bodily destruction (i.e. magma) to kill.
B: They are made of tough materials like bone, stone, and gem.

An easy solution for this is to lower the material strength of body parts as they take damage. This is a realistic simulation of deformation, cracks, and hairline fractures that develop with repeated blows. The more you hit it, the easier it becomes to break. Hit something enough times with a hammer and it shatters.
This way, repeatedly striking a creature in the upper body will eventually grind the torso into dust!

I got a legendary glassmaker in my third immigrant wave. The funny part is he's the third glassmaker I have. I have sand, but I never built a glass furnace. He just lounges around, mostly.

Bronzemurder is awesome. We could call Hollywood and make a major motion picture out of it.

Not to mention, Toady has mentioned that cannons are not part of DF canon.

My military commander was a legendary axedwarf, not to mention sheriff. He threw a tantrum, and killed a cat and wounded two dwarves. The first dwarf just got a gashed forearm, but the second lost an arm at the shoulder and a leg at the knee. Worse, he was my only medical dwarf, so he gets treated by dabblers. To make matters worse, as sheriff, he decides not to punish himself. Even more tragic, the cat belonged to him.

To top it all off, the first dwarf with minor injuries died of thirst in the hospital while waiting in line for treatment.

Good news, though! He's out of the hospital on crutches now.

I still have trouble believing that Jesus's mother would be a virgin afterwords.
God did it her.

PS: Apologies to those who hate TVTropes.
PPS: Also, apologies to those who find the above post sacrilegious or offensive.
PPPS: Apologies to those who want to end the current derail. I'll make some ASCII art for a ASCII game.

Granted. People post links to 4chan instead, and for some sick reason, you don't regret it.

I wish the next person would give me a link to a webcomic that they enjoy and I haven't read yet.
