DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Silhouettes (DF Fanart)
« on: November 16, 2008, 02:05:09 pm »
This is awesome beyond measure, but I'd like to see the implementation of the Team Fortress 2 silhouette mantra: Making every silhouette different and distinguishable enough to be immediately recognized at a glance.

It really adds an awesome touch of personality to silhouettes.

Of course, I'm no artist or 3D designer, so what do I know?  ;)
I think that was Matt Groening's aim when he set out to create the cast of the Simpsons, too.

... But the aforementioned do not work in the same way that this does, being that the creatures being modeled have no pre-defined individual personalities.  :p

Well, they sort of do, see.
Masondwarves are crazy and make enormous statues and walls out of undefined pieces of stone.
Soldierdwarves are bloodthirsty bastards that just as soon rip enemies a new anus as they do die in droves.
Gobbos are little sneaky bastards that somehow treat disabled dwarves with respect yet do not show mercy to newborns.
Kobolds are cute little weirdos with kleptomaniac tendencies.

Things like that, eh.

DF Community Games & Stories / Re: Rapevenom: The Curse of the Pyramids

{The journal seems to be less weathered at this point.}

The fortress has ground to a standstill. We cannot dig anything out, as our picks remain in the river or in the broken hands of Spelguru. There isn't enough dwarfpower to clean the fortress up. The cats are killing all the vermin and creating miasma clouds everywhere. A massive firestorm was sparked by the exploding corpses of the humans. There is foul work afoot. Humans don't usually explode like that.

The animals are still overpopulating. We are stuffing them into a single cage and hope to sell them to the caravan that comes in a month. We do not expect any immigrants to come soon. For now, we will have to be contented with two and a half dwarves running the fortress.

The dogs seem to gather around the Death Room. They are drawn to the psychic imprint that Markavian's death had on it. Maybe it IS a nexus of power now.

The pyramids are resonating...

{The journal has been acknowledged by Mayor JT to be an artifact of history and fate. It will be guarded by Champion Squad forthwith, and only Philosopher NullAshton will have access to its sacred text.}

I do hope some of this money goes to Toady.
Or, at least, that it had his consent in the first place.

{Oh, it turns out that the torn pages are just glued onto the later parts of the journal. That's odd.}

-avian died today. I have plans to replace him, since we need another mechanic. Sure, the deathtraps need building, but damn if I'm going to let him adopt all those animals. Seriously, what kind of upstanding dwarf has TWENTY pets and a wife?

I don't think he's suspicious of that death room he built. I mean, he DID put all the weapons into the mechanisms and assured me that the door was impenetrable. Did I say death room? I meant "Nexus of Power", yes. Of course.

{The torn pages... Are even more torn. Further investigation into the journal is mandated by Philosopher NullAshton.}

{The journal appears to be torn, weathered, and otherwise roughed up. The words 'Alligator', 'Cats' and 'Dogs' are the most prominent scribblings that can be deduced.}

-ter Hollywars fucking drowned in the river. "Oh, look at me, I have a pick and there's a designated stairway right next to me. No, I think I'll just drown."

It doesn't help anything that we can't even get the war dogs into the cages. I swear, those Plasteel pyramids that we built can't be good ways of focusing this latent power in the earth.

Oh, and Spelguru is in a coma. That's always good.

{From here on, the pages seem to be in noticeably better condition, as if the writer did not want the previous content to be seen...}

In one of my latest fortresses, I was making an above-ground barracks/fortification tower/megaproject. I also built a moat.

So in the middle of the construction, I'm suddenly not happy with my bridge roofs (roofs made out of bridges) because I realize that they won't show up in 3Dwarf. So I deconstruct them and a bit of the flooring in between them.

The floors crash down, through the 3 z-levels of the above-ground fort, through the moat through the food stockpile, through the bar/block stockpile, and into the great hall.

A dwarf dies in the process, and the recently-opened lava channel is thundering towards the new hole in the moat.

I don't know how I did it, but I managed to seal off the moat and rebuild everything before the lava death arrives, at the cost of the food stockpile.

4 in-game months later, I accidentally cave in a cliffside.

It, again, punches through the lava moat, into the refuse stockpile, and ends up in the weapon stockpile. Only this time, the lava moat has lava in it.

The firey death invaded my fortress. I just gave up, dug direct passages to the magma pipe, sealed off the exits, and watched as my fortress descended into madness. A dwarf went insane from the get-go, tore apart a child, and threw himself into the lava.

The rest of them huddled in the main hall, maybe thinking that the lava would not reach them.

It did. It killed them all.

Except for one dwarf, who went into a fey mood and managed to get into his room a second before the lava death sealed it off.

He ended up starving to death shortly after.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Fortress Names
« on: August 27, 2008, 09:01:52 pm »
My latest fort's name was RNG'd to be "Somberbanners". The group name is "The Closed Guild". The civ name is "The Humorous Ropes".

Civ name is probably explained by the fact that the civ attacked goblins right after the goblins attacked the elves. Let me just say this: 130 dwarves sieging a dark fortress inhabited by only 2 goblins is quite humorous.

The group name is probably because of my tendencies to kill all the immigrants that arrive after the second wave. Sure is elitist around here!

The fort name, well, I lost 30 immigrants in a single goblin ambush. I'm not sure that's somber, but it certainly was amusing.

I remember this same thing happened with N (a little physics game with a ninja and a... Well, if you respect yourself, you'll look into it).

If you ran a media player in the background (WMP, Winamp, and VLC worked fine), then you'd get a noticeable FPS boost. The developers' excuse was "Well, maybe the Ninja likes music".

DF General Discussion / Re: Not so Legendary Deaths.
« on: August 26, 2008, 10:05:51 pm »
I had a Champion who had managed to SINGLE-HANDEDLY (or, double-handedly) massacre 5 goblin ambushes, 3 goblin sieges, several dozen Zombie deer, foxes, elk, and wolves with nothing but his two trusty masterwork Steel Battle Axes, and his full masterwork steel plate armor.

And then... The goblins learned how to make crossbows.

Needless to say, I raged.

DF General Discussion / Re: Why is the development so slow?
« on: August 26, 2008, 10:03:22 pm »
Are people not allowed any dissent from the opinion, "Toady is god.  Let us worship him."  Gimli is not (since so few of you seem to have checked) a new poster deciding to do some trolling.  He is a long time follower of the game who is disappointed with the lack of visible progress since his last visit.  I would assume, at the risk of being foolish, that he was expecting actual game play changes when his brother told him to check out DF again.

So just cut him some slack, and let him voice his opinion.

This isn't a "You said something bad about Toady, so you must be idiotic" type of response.

It's more of a "You honestly have the guts to complain about a FREE game that ONE person is making, without even donating?" type of response.

There's a difference between kissing butt and standing up for independent developers.

DF General Discussion / Re: So I got this .rar file
« on: August 26, 2008, 10:00:44 pm »
I have WinZip, WinRAR, and 7zip installed. I'm too lazy to uninstall WinZip and WinRAR and then set all the compressed packages to automatically be treated as a 7zip file.

I am bored, however. I might do just that.

I don't worry about the tantrum spiral. My military dwarves are either so badass or so terrible that they all die instantly or win epically, respectively. You heard me.

But yes, the last time I had a really big military, the dwarves were busting out babies nonstop. As soon as a baby turned into a child and then into an adult (2 years), a new baby popped up.
