DF Modding / Re: Any idea why my natural walls look like this?
« on: September 27, 2012, 02:11:03 am »
You probably replaced the tileset but didn't replace the raws. Those tileset packs usually change the game object data (the raw files), so to properly remove it you'd need to overwrite everything with a clean version. Also, if you're doing this on a world that's already been generated, you'll need to edit the raw files in that region's folder, since those files are duplicated for each world on world creation.

solar powered car?

can you get large batteries for your car? if not, you'll not be able to drive it at night.

"Large batteries"? I think you don't understand how vehicles in Cataclysm work.

Solar panels on a car will recharge any storage batteries (essentially fuel tanks but for electric motors) you have, while in clear/sunny weather during the day. You can still recharge a storage battery with batteries, and if for some reason you really need a lot of energy capacity, you can install two storage batteries. However, the basic electric motor consumes a small amount of fuel, so it's hardly worth it to add a second storage battery.

I made a nuclear motorcycle. It's pretty similar to the regular motorcycle, except with large wheels instead of wheels, an extra "frame" part behind the seat for an extra trunk space, a windshield on the handle, and some plating on the front wheel and handle.

It has a safe speed of just under 190mph. I was driving it at this speed across the bridge into town, and decided to see what would happen if I just didn't stop. I plowed through a bank vault, out the bank, and punched holes in and out of three other buildings before deciding (very stupidly) to apply the handbrake while just exiting a bar (that turn, I was still inside the wall punching through it). I lost control, jamming my cycle inside that wall, and flinging me most of the way across the street. Luckily, nothing on the motorcycle even broke, although some repairs were required.

I named it the Psychopomp. Seemed appropriate for a ridiculously fast fusion-powered motorcycle.

I also have the "Americana", which is this big vehicle with large wheels, two 2.5L gasoline engines (basically two car engines), and lots of spikes and plating.

Also: The "Electrobuggy", a sort of electric-powered tricycle with two regular wheels in the back and a large one in the front, with boxes on the rear wheels, powered by a regular electric motor and with a solar panel on the handle.

Next I either want to find a 6L engine and use that instead of the two 2.5L engines in the Americana, or, if I find another solar panel or two (I have three lying around), I'll use the large electric motor I have to build a bigger electric vehicle with more storage space.

You need to work on your punctuation. You use commas where commas don't go, and leave them out where they would help, for example. It would improve the grammar and make the flow seem a little less rambling.

Playing as a Felid, I got hungry as HELL and decided to nom on a corpse. Is there any way to get rid of nausea or do I just have to let it run its course?

Any method wouldn't be worth it. Just let it run its course.

"Dragonscale armor"? Huh?
I think he means the armor you make by enchanting dragon scales. Don't wanna sound like a douche but:

1) It's probably ungodly hard to find that armor on D:1
2) It's probably not even randomly generated
3) Octopodes suck anyway

My point was more that there are at least seven distinct types of dragon armour, and they aren't necessarily very comparable at all, so I had no idea which he was talking about.

It is totally possible to find them on D:1, though. I found pearl dragon armour like 70 turns into my game once.

Nope. You can't give individual orders.

You could change your game's color scheme to be lower-contrast or something.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Why does everyone use the default graphics?
« on: September 09, 2012, 09:28:09 pm »
To me, text graphics are more like reading. Maybe I don't want a visual representation of what a dwarf looks like. Maybe I just want to know "here is a dwarf" and allow my imagination to picture it however I please, without any particular art or graphical style getting in the way.

Why would using one tileset instead of another affect framerate?

Every screenshot or video I see on these forums use it. I can't stand it, the newer graphics pack is so awesome grass is green, dirt is brown you can see what things are, everything is not weird symbols.

Grass is always green. Dirt is always brown. Graphics packs are not responsible for that.

It's a marketing thing, and was part of the assignment.  During product testing, people from different countries sometimes prefer different covers and no one is sure why.  That's why some games end up with different covers or names from country to country.  I do think it's a bit weird too.

Oh, I get that. I just don't get why the distinction is "America" vs. "everywhere else".

I know this isn't your choice, but I really don't get the "American" vs. "Non-American" distinction, as if those are two meaningful categories, as if every English-speaking country on the planet but the US is exactly the same or the US is somehow special.

You can at least try. Plenty of people get over certain prejudices, and even if you can't, you can at least try to act reasonable and compassionate in spite of them.
