DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: building an awesome storage tower
« on: October 31, 2008, 06:28:00 pm »
Well now that you can make large sections of floor and walls it's infinitely easier than the old days of single square constructions.  Heck, I plotted out a huge aqueduct system in about 5 minutes, where it would have taken 5 days before.

Wait... you can?

Christ, all that work on that tower...

Yeah, I scrapped my old world, this new one has everything I need and more :D I have a chasm to work with now, though I'm not sure how I'll incorperate that into my project.

but unless you need some high pressure stuff

I do, I want to make lava geysers that alternate or fire off in a line or something. I'm not sure about how I want to organize them yet.

Sorry to bring a dead thread back to life, but what happens to the projectiles after they're shot if they don't cross z-levels?

What kind of flux, and how deep were you digging?
Marble, and I dug down about 13 zlevels

Platinum metal is magma-safe (but native platinum "stone" is not, so no mechanisms) - also, a surprising amount of equipment for working with magma doesn't actually have to be magma-safe - you can use pumps made entirely of wood, for instance.

I actually have a couple all-wood pumps up at the moment, that isn't the problem.  I need a shitton of bauxite mechanisms to complete the design I have lain out. I plan on having the map completely flooded save for a couple spots for caravans/sieges to enter and a bunch of alternating magma fountains.

I've never experimented with obsidian making, but couldn't you drop lava into the ocean to form a wall?  On the other hand it might just make a shower of rubble and debris.

If that did work though, you could completely wall off the north part of the ocean from the south, and dig a small trap in an artificial bay of your own.

Dig through any sedimentary layers you have. It comes in large clusters so if there is any it should be easy to find and cover all your needs.
You don't need that many of it - just the Mechanisms on Magma-Floodgates. Everything else can be made of steel.
If you don't find any, you will have to make it without any safety-floodgates :o

Therein lies another one of my problems on this map... I can't find any metal, let alone iron.  I found a cluster of copper and a cluster of platium and that's it so far.  I've been practically strip mining the map and I can't find anything.

I might have to scrap this world and try to get a better mountainhome/embart site.

Darnit though, I thought this site was perfect... I have a volcano, and river, flux, and no aquifer. :(

There was a race of goblins somebody posted in the modding forums. So much worse than ender's goblins.  If you can find those you won't be worrying about the game being easy anymore.

Can you import bauxite? I'm currently working on a megaproject that will involve a huge tower with lavafalls which I plan on using to flood the entire map with.  The problem is, I don't have bauxite on my map, and I don't see any way to request it in the trade liason screen. Is there a way to get any?

Well those dragons are probably real to the true dragons....cuz a real dragon cant get strangled by a cheese maker

Bonus points if you find that reference about the cheese maker

I recall the name being Bink...
I also remember something about raisin cheese.

In my experience, the sieges where my dwarves actually saw the gobs didn't turn out to well.  That's usually because it means the gobs got past my trap room....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't creatures (including pikes) have to kill a fair amount of dwarves to get a name?

I've never had a megabeast. Ever.

I had a fort go 24 years once, and still nothing.
I feel like I'm missing out :(

I wouldn't think it'd be easy to automate, but if you can pull it off, congratulations.

Also, to chained animals breed? I know caged ones don't.

I think caged animals do breed, at least if they're in the same cage.
