So, a friend of mine tried to get me into Rimworld. And...my main reaction was 'dwarf fortress does all this so much better', which uh, dissapointed him, but inspired me to start playing DF again.

So I'm currently on a glacial fortress, and have some Stupid Newbie Questions I've forgotten the answer to.

1. How do I force my dwarves to carve blocks out of ice so I can make my Ice Palace aboveground? Ice isn't on the rocks list. I looked under 'status' (z) then STONE, as well under the mason's workshop and DETAILS. I need my ice blocks!

2. I see the old 'certain ice stuff melts in summer underground regardless of the temperature or ice layer' bug/feature/I have no idea anymore is still there. 90% of my large start is frozen over (even in summer) glacier, and about 10% is another biome with trees and a frozen-even-in-summer stream. AFAIK, even if I choose another start, that stuff will still melt, right? I seem to recall the trick was placing stuff aboveground, and making sure you had a roof over it.

3. I'm using the 'Caveat Empor' pack with Phoebus graphics. I'm not sure why - I'm 100% sure I've used these graphics for years and possibly a decade or more...but .... the white highlight of the font on menus is...super white-grey and dim, and barely visible. There's barely any way to tell which item in a menu I'm highlighting. Is there a way to tweak that? Its annoying.

So, this is a dumb question; but its been a LONG time since I've played Dwarf Fortress, and as we all know, while you can get used to it, the interface isn't so much 'complex' or 'bad' as ....nonexistent.

Which is to say, I've been playing a fort for two days now and can't, for the !@#!#@@#! life of me, get the screen where it shows an individuals dwarf's skills and labors on/off to show. I can get the huge /dfhack/ list to show, but not the one toady designed. I thought I highlighted the unit and hit 'g' but that doesn't seem to be it, so I must be remember wrong. Anyone help me out? Sorry!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Stupid Interface Question: More Temperature Info?

Question - I can't seem to remember how to pull up the temperature of a tile in dwarf mode.

I started on a temperate ocean bordering shrublands and a glacier. Supposedly it had some nice, jagged cliffs conjoining the glacier and the ocean. The 'temperate ocean' is completely frozen over. Wonderful, I thought - time to play with ice. (which I remember from DF2012 was buggy as hell, but supposedly is less buggy now?)

Well, I remember that ice constructions used to melt sometimes (or be lava-proof) and ice furniture would instantly melt. I may be remembering wrong? I did some reading and some testing; ice constructions definitely don't melt anymore, and ice-furniture via mod workshops is...uh, interesting.

Anyways, I set up a number of ice doors (some of which are good a year later) an ice-bedroom (which entirely melted) - and an ice-tavern. The thing is, the order and the fashion in which these things melted is....random and odd. Like, half of a room would melt but not the other-half. Even when all on the same biome.

Now, knowing dwarf fortress, I'm guessing one of two things is going on.

1. Temperature doesn't work at all.

or

2. Toady has some intense mathematical modeling going on involving the temperature of the earth, which posits the atmospheric temperature inside caves as some sort of fixed point, and he has detailed enough modeling that there are hidden temperature winds/breezes going on causing some things to melt and some to not.

Again, knowing DF, its probably both.

But I'm curious to see whats actually going on. I don't think there's any way I can get ice beds to 'not melt'; the only experimentation I have yet to do is 'ice furniture inside but outdoors on the glacier', but I think my dwarfs would freeze to death, so I'm reluctant to try that.

Does toady still send out those reward drawings? I sent in my first donation (yeah, sorry!) not this summer, but late summer before that. It wasn't big; I can barely pay the rent. Somewhere between 8 and 16 dollars, I don't remember exactly where. I made sure it was big enough to warrant a drawing as I just kinda wanted to see one, and submitted it via paypal to avoid the post office. But I never saw a drawing or anything.

Do they still do them, or is there a bigger threshold now, or a backlog - how does it work?

I tried to find a forum topic on this - but to my amazing surprise, a search didn't reveal one.

I think we should give our reviews of the hobbit, and talk about dwarf culture within it, and how it stacks up to dwarf culture, and the things we can do about dwarf fortress - and what we have learned about dwarves.

Does anyone else find themselves with what I think of as "Cotton Candy Syndrome?" You ever dig right down to the caverns, and spot adamantine right away - and then fail to develop your other metalsmithing industries because you really, really want to just dive for that cotton candy?

Well, I find myself doing the same thing as I play DF. I have not played DF in at least 9 months because every update seems better then the last, and I keep thinking 'I'll play it after the NEXT update' - and I never play it.

Does anyone else have Cotton Candy Syndrome?

General Discussion / Motherboard Replacement Reccomendation!

Hey guys.

I am trying to replace my motherboard, but keep my CPU (I'm on a budget).I have troubles with the current motherboard, its never been reliable, has a max of 2 gigs of RAM, and has NEVER really been reliable about recognizing USB's, even with an upgrade to the power supply and using a powered USB bus. I hate the motherboard, so I need to upgrade. I have about a hundred bucks (perhaps a bit more).

 

My processor is an Intel Pentium D Processor 940 (4M Cache, 3.20 GHz, 800 MHz FSB).

Intel Pentium D Processor 940 (4M Cache, 3.20 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) I'm trying to find a motherboard (I mostly searched google and newegg) that will support this, but I'm having a lot of trouble.

I tried just searching for one of the chipsets (Intel Q965 - it seemed to be the most advanced) but had no luck. There are a LOT of motherboards out there.

 Can anyone recommend something for me? I'm trying to keep the CPU as I have been very satisfied with its speed and performance, especially on Dwarf Fortress, and I really don't think I'd get better performance out of a new one, especially on my non-existent budget.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Starting dwarves can lie, too!

So, the first thing I do is check my starting dwarves and name them. I have one named Dopy. He was one of my starting seven. He has two deities, and his only acquaintances are those in the game with him. I did notice, however, that he seemed to have skills that I couldn't remember having given him, but since I chose a profile before adding them, I wasn't sure.

So I set my other dwarves to making engravings. I like a well hewn fortress! Whats this, I see?

So I check his deity screen and one of his dieties "most often associated with fortresses" has inspired a necromancer, created a werewolf, and cursed someone with vampirism.

So, what is this guy? A vampire? A necromancer?

DF Modding / Mods that do not change difficulty

Are there any major mods that do -not- change the difficulty by adding insane things? Almost all of them these days just do some absurd things with difficulty (even the ones that claim to really just want to enhance vanilla df/add optional features) - in ways that I just don't enjoy. I -like- sitting on piles of goblin corpses; and I have a high enough FUN rate that I don't really want it to become even harder. I enjoy new buildings, enemies, things to build and ways of killing - I just don't want to see it get harder. I think farming/the economy/the invader difficulty is fine.

Anyone have mod reccomendations?

You know how on blogs you can write posts in advance, and have them post at a later date and time?

Now, I'm sure the new release will be out in a few days. Don't argue about the release! THIS IS NOT ONE OF THOSE POSTS.

.... BUT....

If Toady were to make, say, YEARS of posts and set them to automatically update, then die/be kidnapped by elves/be held indefinitely without trial due to NDA 2012, and we had no idea....

...

How many years do you think we'd all still hang around the forums waiting before we figured it out?

ALSO, FOR THIS REASON, PLEASE OPPOSE NDA 2012 THE WAY YOU WOULD SOPA ... ... BEFORE THEY TAKE TOADY AWAY!

DF Modding / Whats wrong with this raw file?

I edited this satyr-civ (from a real modder's mod; as opposed to me, who just privately tinkers) awhile back to be more to my liking. I don't remember the exact changes.  In any event, it doesn't work - all of the natural skill tokens get rejected. What did I do wrong? I'm pretty sure thats what I added.

DF Modding / Buildings Extracted?

I used to mod DF alot; but gave it up when DF 2010 came out; I've never figured out the new tissue system, or most of the new raw systems, really. I was only doing fairly low end stuff to begin with, tinkering, and so on. This leaves me in a bit of a quandry because most of the new mods are going beyond the scope of what I'd prefer, and its harder for me to 'frankenstein' together my own private mods, which is what I used to do.

What I do like about some of them, are the variety of useful, fun and cool buildings. But I'm not really sure how to just extract them from a mod, and I wouldn't want to leave anything hanging, so to speak. Does anyone know of any links or posts where this has been done already? I did a search but couldn't find them.

Trying to get a forgotten beast killed. In desparation, I assign a legendary miner to be a squad leader and command it to kill it.

The first damn thing he does is go put his pick in a stockpile then go to wrestle the @#!#@!@##@.

Sometimes, this game's !fun! is really just !annoying!. Any advice?

I wonder if it would be possible (through embark tricks or Adventurers hauling things to reclaim sites) - to get a secrets slab where your dwarves can read it!
