DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Where are Cave Entrances?

Where are they? I havn't seen them since DF 2010 came out, and they were suddenly giant ant mounds. I have never seen a hole in the top of those mounds yet. Or on the way up or down. Could someone provide a screenshot?

So, invasions are fixed but goblins are still dying in world-gen for me. Anyone know whats going on and how to fix it?

I havn't tried the DF fantasy  music pack, from:

in awhile. Has anyone gotten it to work on the new version? Toady's guitar drives me nuts! I can't seem to get it to work. I deleted the old song_game and replaced it with the new one. No music at all.

DF Gameplay Questions / Freezing and Season

I can't seem to find any rhyme or rthymn to when bodies of water freeze and unfreeze. Sometimes they'll start frozen and -never unfreeze-, sometimes they'll unfreeze and flood half the map, and sometimes they'll just never freeze.

In general, I've noticed:


1. Temperate biomes do not necessarily (or even usually) freeze, even when farther towards the glacier areas

2. Cold biomes do not necessarily unfreeze in the summer


Anyone know how I can avoid playing a full year to figure this stuff out for specific sites?

DF Gameplay Questions / The Curious Case of the Vanishing Booze

So, my embark points are set to 5000. Don't criticize, perhaps its a royal expedition. In any case, I usually start with at least 3-4 hundred booze, and 10 male cats. But by the end of the first winter, I'm always in a tantrum spiral, unless I have water on hand.

Where is my booze vanishing to? I can clearly see in the stocks that its all going poof!

DF Modding / Digging Designation Cancelled

So, I've been trying to get the dwarves to stop canceling their digging task when they detect damp dirt. I can get the game to stop pausing by modifying announcements, but I cannot get them to stop cancelling. I fiddled with it quite a bit, even trying to remove that line from the announcements. The game refuses. When the new version came out, I asked the maker of the old 'Just Dig It' utility if he would update it for the new version, and basically got the answer 'no'.

Does anyone know of any way to circumvent the constant cancellations? Its rather annoying!

I know its been covered endlessly before, but I'd like to restate how completely annoying brokers are. One job. ONE JOB the -entire year- and, since you can't keep them from being elected expedition leader, instead of trading they go take a break, have a meeting, take another break, drink, etc. ....and by the time they are done, the caravan has come and gone.

And, short of letting some unskilled !@#@# practically give all your stuff away, there's not a damn thing you can do about it.

So, I added Indiv_Controllable to the Ant Men, because I want to try out playing as an Ant Queen and be absurdly badass.

Sadly, I just absurdly suck. I was imagining some badass Alien-Queen sized beast, but instead I'm just naked and defenseless. Anyone have any tips for how to make my Ant Queen the feared vermin she should be? I thought I'd just steal some bronze armor then go train wrestling, but while I got the armor the first beast I encountered (a cougar) killed me.

DF Gameplay Questions / Elf Trader Insanity/Issues

So uh. I have half of the map walled off from the other half. The stupid elf trader came on the half that my depot was not on, and stayed until he went insane.

I have now carved up a hole in the wall to get his stuff, which is....42 pages of items. Yes, 42 pages. My new major industry is 'hauling items out of the warthog pocket plane', apparently.

Am I due for an elf invasion because of all of this?

So, while I can't give the specific history of the site, due to me accidentally leaving on "World History Starts Obscured" in worldgen...I have found an awesome new type of reclaim to play on.

The Non-Dwarven Ruin!

The site in question was one I found in adventure mode. It seems to have been the victim of many, many wars between goblins and humans, each of which seem to have built their own style of buildings on the property at different times. There are three goblin towers on the site, many intact human buildings that seem to have been abandoned...not /that/ long ago, as they still have fresh food but looted shops, and older, completely ruined human buildings.

Its a new type of challenge for me. I have to figure out how to deal not only with the three goblin towers, but the widespread human buildings. I've spent my entire first year using all of my dwarves to build a massive wall around the site; otherwise it would have suffered the same fate all the other inhabitants obviously suffered.

Amusingly enough, the first group of wild animals I found...mountain goats...spawned on the snow-covered roof of one of the towers.

This should be fun! Had to find it in adventure mode first though.

Has anyone verified what happens if a playable civilization is given the Layer_Linked tag? Does it cause any errors? What happens? Because frankly, there are many, many interesting possibilities here, not just for playable entities, but expansions of existing animal civs.

DF Gameplay Questions / Wierd Food Issues?

I modded the game to let me embark with 5000 points. I brought everything I could ever possibly want, including 'yes' amounts of food. Its winter 1, and I'm now out of food. I've had a cook cooking for the past half hour, but I still have no prepared food stockpiled. I've had two cooks going for the past 5 minutes, and still no prepared food. I clearly have food to cook.

At one point, a moment ago...one of them canceled cooking due to not having anything to cook, but I have 400+ drinks to cook, and 30 or so fish I just caught.

DF General Discussion / The CatSplosian: Reality at work?

We all denigrate the Catsplosian, but has it occured to anyone that this is what actually happens in real life? This is why people spay and neuter cats. Because you really can end up with colonies of dozens of cats even in the smallest suburban towns. I happen to know that the small town where I live  has at least half a hundred strays, even though I don't hardly ever see any cats on the street...because thats not how colonies of cats work.

In any case, they are clearly an invasive species that breeds and breeds and breeds and breeds until...people do drastic things like spay or neuter them.

So. Catsplosian: Bug...or ....Dwarf Fortress going SKYNET ARMOK on us?

It seems like I have no options when I embark now, basically you -have- to take the default options, because you have no points for anything else.

Is there a way to use modding or init changes to increase the number of points I have? I want some real options again.
