DF Suggestions / Re: Why is Dwarf Fortress on Desura, and not Steam?
« on: September 06, 2012, 01:30:42 am »
Super Crate Box is now on Steam. No microtransactions, no virtual item store... no f2p junk. It's just the way it was before it appeared on steam - pure freeware. Valve does not seem to have anything against publishing pure freeware.

Oh, and how many Steam subscribers would want to play DF that aren't already?

Irrelevant. Also many. I'd play more often. Many of my friends would try the game for the first time, just because it's easy.
Besides, why would you not want to have it on Steam? 45 Million users and you don't want to give them easy access?
Ok, maybe there aren't many who would donate to Tarn after playing DF on Steam - let's say one in a 1000?....O.K. One in 10.000? Ok. That equals 450 new dwarf fortress fans/donations.

But if Tarn doesn't want to then that's that but why? Has he said?

DF Suggestions / Re: Compute Shaders

Now, this Compute Shader stuff won't be available soon so yes, we won't see it for a long while.

You'll see it shipping from Apple probably in the first half of the year and they are already shipping compatible hardware. I'm sure compatible hardware is also pretty common in regular Windows systems shipping right now.

I don't expect Toady to go anywhere near it unless it's an effort similar to the OpenGL one, but it's really not far off.
As I understand it the hardware available today is capable of using Compute Shaders in software only. And the OpenCL effort seems to be on its way to be a standard supported by ATI/Nvidia.

Profit, know that I value your suggestion even if I don't agree with it but I have to comment on your last post:
But you know.. the free market usually works in real life
Probably not the best time to make such a statement. True, it usually works - until it crashes.
Yes I made that comment but please let's refrain from turning this into an economic/political debate :P

Although the Great One would probably have no difficulty with a galaxy simulation (it's only one galaxy right?) I propose a Blood simulation instead or Blood Plasma simulator to be exact. There we have good stuff like dissolved proteins, mineral ions, hormones, carbon dioxide, water etc.. and last but not least the blood cells themselves. On top of that we have all kinds of fun time interactions between all the gunk, white blood cells attacking viruses & bacteria, I could go on and on... (I couldn't actually)

Oh I almost forgot thrombocytes.

This way instead of having some useless galaxies floating about, The Great One could incorporate the system for use by our dwarfen brothers & sisters.

I also think donations are more efficient as a sign of gratitude and encouragement, than as debts that have to be repaid.
I concur.

Since I started the thread talking about Compute Shaders :P ...
It would only benefit people with certain graphics cards, and require him to implement multithreading.    Since Toady's currently averse to implementing even basic multithreading, I have a feeling that if we do see it, it won't be for a long while.
Now, this Compute Shader stuff won't be available soon so yes, we won't see it for a long while. That means that it will probably benefit many people who will by then have a dx11/opencl/whatever capable card.
And again - I don't know anything about programming but I found this to be very interesting:
"According to Microsoft, the main target applications for the Compute Shader include post processing, physics and AI amongst other things."
(from bit-tech.net http://www.bit-tech.net/bits/2008/09/17/directx-11-a-look-at-what-s-coming/5)

I'm not that concerned anymore though about the slowness of the fortress. See I tried that new OpenGL version yesterday and it was FAST. On my laptop. HI FIVE!

DF Suggestions / Compute Shaders

I know nothing about programming but this Compute Shader stuff looks promising to me and I was just wondering if The Great One had looked at this newfangled technology.

I for one would like to utilize my ridiculously expensive gfx card to make FASTER FORTRESS.

and then, i've made my vote FOR a suggested feature, but i would also like to have a vote AGAINST one, namely excavate. It seems to me that mining or digging is essentially removing material from the ground. Not having that part of the task is wishing to make stone simply evaporate by sheer terror of a copper pick.

Good Point. I second that.

Yeah, of course I want to know what people want.  That's what this board is here for.  We can try stickying this I suppose.  I'm not sure in general how else we could change the suggestion boards.  I don't think they are broken, but some people have different view on this.

Of course it's good to know what the people want - the only thing I'm concerned about is if I'm voting for some stuff that isn't possible to implemented in the near future.

I don't think the polls are broken, I would however like to be able to give more than one vote. I think the polls would be more accurate if you could rate maybe 10 items on the list, giving them 1-10 points.

I bump this some more since The Great One has not answered my earlier inquiry in this thread.

My suggestion would eliminate repeated suggestions. We could also have two poll threads running.

One with user suggestions like this one, stuff The Great One might not have thunk of yet.
The other with The Great One's list of stuff that He sees as candidates for near-future implementation.

If you were referring to arc order...

Please bear with me as I am very drunk on th3 white russian.

I was not referring to the arc order. More to the very many REQ's on the great T's list. Surely He Himself has to have a greater understanding of the all encompassing order of things.

It all comes down to this: Do you, Great Toady One, have an opinion on how these polls are conducted. Do you wish that we, the lowly users of your magnificent code will have a more direct (as we are trying to now) influence on the development - or would it be more wise to have you telling us what features are feasible implementable-wize in the near future?

Drunken Greetings from Hafnarfjörður, Iceland everyone!

Since you are here Toady I'd like to suggest this:

Since I have mixed feelings about these polls since you clearly have a greater oversight regarding the development of DF - wouldn't it be better if you would present us with a list of features so that we won't be asking you to implement stuff you have on next years schedule - just things you have already decided to tackle but haven't decided in what order to do them.

I'm not saying that every 0 post voter is legit but just so you know, when I registered on the forum not so long ago I did it because I wanted to vote on one of these things.
Edit: To sum up: I was once a 0 post voter.

Job priorities.

close second: mass building
even closer third (would be 1st choice but I understand that on this subject the Great T has spoken): framerate improvements.

Semi-Off Topic Question One: One vote seems kind of black/white to me. Why not 10 votes from 10-1 ? I'm not saying that would be better - only wondering what the pros/cons of the different methods are. Starting a new thread on this one is probably a good idea.

Semi-Off Topic Question Two: Can anyone point me to a guide on how to improve framerate using traffic zones or whatnot?

I'm not going to suggest any gameplay related improvements as such since I'm probably not the bigger picture that's in the Creator's mind.

Having said that, all suggestions here must surely be by definition gameplay related but you get my drift.

1. Multi-threaded program code
2. Framerate improvements
3. Resizeable viewport

p.s. would it make any sense to combine the framerate improvements+multithreaded code suggestions since they essentially mean the same thing, or what?
