I'd say dig in and shut yourself off from the world ASAP...make preparations to let the caravans in. The marmots and goats shouldn't be too much trouble, just have a dwarf on military duty guarding the wagon till you get everything moved in.

With luck, the map will later spawn some more savage things like undead elephants but you may not be so fortuante.

I really love the idea of using magma flows to heat a bath

Also, why not have multiple rooms in your bath house, a frigidarium, tepidarium and a hot room (forgot the latin name) like the Romans did...your dwarves can move through the different temperatures.

Also, you can put heating furnaces underneath the pool, powered by wood stoves/charcoal if you don't have magma.

What variables should I edit if I want to have a disproportionate amount of evil areas? And precisely what range of numbers should I edit them TO? i.e. what exactly do the numbers mean?

We should have a contest to recreate various real-life castles or other locations for awesomeness in 3ddwarf.

Or better yet...how about that river in the Fellowship of the Rings movie with the two big statues of the guys holding out their hands? That would be mad epic.

The West Bank (Judah for those of you who grew up going to Sunday School) would be sweet as hell to embark in, all kinds of crazy hilltops to build on, natural caves so you wouldn't even have to dig that much, but not too many other natural resources so you have to rely on caravans, making it difficult - and I'm sure the massive amount of caves would mean all kinds of *men raiding your fort.

So is it possible to have a feature that appears on the surface (brook) as well as one that appears underground (magma pipe/hfs/chasm) on the same tile?

I really really wish you could bring goods to the depot before the traders are there...I never seem to have enough bins to contain all my crafts, meaning there's about six pages of hauling jobs and dwarves never seem to think those jobs are important even when the merchants are about to leave.

You could channel out an certain area and bring water into it, have ramps leading in and out of the area, and have some way of draining it, then just have "bath house" be a zone like meeting zone or dump, and have dwarves get happy by going in it.

Also the sand idea is cool. Like Muslims, dwarves can use sand if there's no water around...
