General Discussion / Re: Wow. Less than 170 days left . . .

Democracy is a system of government, a country can be a democracy regardless of how well it conforms to your standards of what's right and wrong.

Congrats that has nothing to do with what I posted

you can be a democracy and still be oppressive

Also I find it odd that people wouldn't talk to the Hamas government because they're terrorists, but the Olmert government could rack up a death toll much higher than a decade (or more)'s worth of Hamas attacks in "Operation Cast Lead" and not be terrorists and still be worthy to talk to

supporting oppressive governments like ... Israel ...

WTF?  Israel is the most [classical] liberal democracy in the Middle East, and were it not for Iraq the only democracy.  Despite suffering constant attacks from Palestinians Israeli citizens enjoy unprecedented civil liberties, both for a people at war and for a people of the Middle East.  Whatever liberty interests you, be it religious freedom, gay rights, women's rights, economic freedom, or the right to vote Israel is the only country in the Middle East that covers it all.  And they preserve all these liberties unapologetically under a constant rain of shrapnel from artillery shells and suicide bombers courtesy of their age-old foe the Palestinians.
There's always SOMEBODY with the "Oh Israel is the only democracy in the middle east" line.

Seriously. You don't know jack shit.

Also, "constant rain of suicide bombers" lol. Looks like someone hasn't been reading any news from there for the past couple years.

If you think Israel is oppressive you have been inside the West Bank.
Fixed that for you.

Waterboarding does no permanent physical harm and causes neither "pain" in the classic sense nor lingering ill effects.  Most damaging to your case though is that terrorists can end their coercion at any time by simply telling what they know.  That doesn't rise to the legal definition of "torture", at least not in this neck of the woods.
How are you such an expert on whether waterboarding is painful or not? Also, the problem with "terrorists can end their coercion at any time" is that a) it's still torture and b) a bunch of the people we pick up in Iraq and Afghanistan and subsequently waterboard, ARE NOT TERRORISTS. The majority of the Guantanamo Bay suspects, for example, were just dudes that happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, or were essentially sold to us for reward money.

Jude, the Southern States where hands down some of the largest money makers in the union at the time. The only reason the north even won that war was  the fact that the Norths Naval Superiority allowed them to blockade southern ports, and that the European powers where too busy to jump at the chance to defend their cotton supplys and fracture the US.

relevance?

The revolutionary war was absolutely started by America. I don't want to have to repeat American History class for everyone, but suffice to say, taxes and the "Boston Massacre" don't really count as an attack on our soil. That's of course discounting the fact it technicly was Britains soil at the time.
Yeah but once we used our natural right of self determination and said we were our own country then Britain didn't want to listen and started fighting us

hence defending

wait what the fuck...why am I referring to America as "us"

Quote
As for the South not doing anything for America today, that's just blatant ignorance.
we could already have universal health care and gay marriage, to name the first two of a million things that pop into my head

what a fantastic analogy

I don't know about you, but I'd prefer a military that targets and attacks threats before we've got enemy forces on our shores.
Ah, big fan of the Dick Cheney school of foreign policy I see. Glad it worked out so well for you

@ Aqizzar: I didn't read  that story, but are we looking at another My Immortal here?

The last time America defended basic freedom wasn't that long ago. You could argue about our current wars, but the Gulf War is unarguably defense of territorial sovereignty.
Oh, that's totally true. Although you absolutely can't make the case that we did it because our motives are pure, or something. Otherwise there are countless other situations in the world where we would/should/could have intervened and did not. If your country does something good, but for selfish/manipulative reasons, and your reason for serving your country is because of morality, then where does that leave your moral case?

In case you don't know, I'm referring to things like us not doing jack shit about Darfur, supporting oppressive governments like Saudi Arabia and Israel and many others, sponsoring overthrows of legitimate governments...based on this, you can't make a case that defending America is defending morality. Any attempts to equate any country's cause or interests with morality (but especially so for a superpower/empire like America) lead to an impossible moral quagmire and only serve the purpose of jingoism.

@ Civil war comment: Yeah we could have just let the south go (and hell, probably should have, for all the good it's doing us having them in the country now) but once it was decided not to, they went on the offensive and penetrated into Union territory. So any battles fought there would qualify as defending the US. So would the revolutionary war, I'd say.

Oh?  So we weren't defending our country by fighting the axis powers, who had already bombed us and threatened to take us over anyway if they weren't stopped overseas?
It's really a stretch to call it "defending your country" when no attempt is being made to invade your country

Fighting off the bombers at Pearl Harbor would have been defending the country

Quote
We weren't defending our country when we entered (and helped to break the stalemate) of WWI when the Zimmermen note was intercepted?
See above

Quote
We weren't defending our country when trying to track down terrorist groups in the middle east?

No

that's part pre-emptive offense and part revenge; defending the country would be thwarting their attacks, which is presumably going on, but by other agencies than the military

In a purely single player game the term "cheating" loses all its meaning, especially in a game that's meant to be modded so much. It's the same as Morrowind.

Anyway, crossbows, plump helmets and traps are all cheating!

Looks interesting. The wikipedia article blows though, there's no description of gameplay and it's just a list of all the units in the game.

In my opinion, Huxley's Brave New World is far more relevant to us today than 1984. Especially if you're American or a member of most capitalist modern societies.

I believe that people should do whatever makes them happy.

That is the most horrible moral tenet I've ever heard for so many incredibly obvious reasons

Life has no point if your not happy enough to enjoy it.

Way to miss the point

According to your philosophy, if raping children, then chopping off their limbs one at a time while cooking and eating each one, makes me happy, then I should do that

Also, lol at people equating "joining the US military" with "defending your country"

the last time the US military defended the US was about 1863 ish

The people who remain employed during a recession are people who have worked to become irreplaceable (or just aren't replaceable enough at the moment to make the loss of productivity and efficacy worth firing them).
That is pure mythology and one of the most laughably ridiculous things I've ever heard

Man I remember the blizzard of 96, I was little enough and the snowdrifts were big enough that I had all kinds of tunnels going on. Also, they plowed the snow into a bigass mountain on the corner, it was like 10 feet high, and we built a throne on top and a slide going down. It was the shit.

And no not really I don't feel like debating but good luck getting out of the military if you decide you don't want to be there. I wasn't kidding about them completely owning you, like, in the sense of property

I love arguing. One of my favorite sayings is an Israeli one "Two Israelis having a friendly discussion sounds like four Americans having an argument." I really identify with Israelis in some ways.
