DF General Discussion / Re: DF IRC Problems
« on: March 19, 2009, 11:39:10 am »
Worldirc had some issues, and Newnet is split in half while I'm writing this, So I guess migrating elsewhere might be in order. Choosing one official channel sounds like a great idea, but I don't really know enough about irc networks to say which one would be good.

Actually the phylactery is taken entirely from Slavic myth only somewhat simplified (As well as the whole myth about Liches, which is essentially simply a powerful sorceror who put his soul away in an attempt to be immortal) . If you had read the legend of Kochei you would be aware of this.  D&D made only a few original critters and the liche isn't one of them.
As I mentioned, while there have been people who put their souls inside objects to escape death, they weren't called liches and they generally weren't like the DnD monster. Other people, aside from Kochei the Deathless (I don't really know anything about him beside the name), are Dorian Gray, from The Portrait of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde; and Sauron, from The Lord of The rings by J.R.R Tolkien. And then there are lots of examples written after DnD, which may or may not be inspired by it, such as Voldemort, Davy Jones, and undoubtedly others.

DF Bug Reports / Re: Hovering dwarf?
« on: March 19, 2009, 08:58:29 am »
That sounds feasible. The seasonal autosave could have frozen him in air after someone threw him while sparring. Known bug, then.

I'm not sure if Dwarf Companion works on Wine, and even if it does, I'm not sure if I want him to come down. It seems he is basically immortal at the moment, but since he's one of my own dwarves, that shouldn't cause too many problems. Except of course the fortress is indestructible unless I abandon it, but that doesn't sound too bad. Maybe I'll just build some kind of a shrine around him, and call it magic.

Most importantly, can we mod in a contagious zombie disease that turns its victims into shambling, rotting monsters that crave the flesh of the living? And if we can, can we make the viral zombies fight the magical zombies?

And liches are a weird case. It looks to me they were mostly invented by the dreaded role-playing games. There were occasionally people who placed their soul inside an object to escape death, but they weren't called liches, and they usually werent skeletal wizards who for some reason can still regenerate their skeleton. So, will our liches be like Sauron, Voldemort, Marquis de Carabas or the standard DnD monster, what will they be called, and can the player become one in adventure mode? Are their bodies still alive and can they die? Just how do you make a soul jar, just how do you destroy a soul jar, and what happens if you bind your soul into, say, a building, a sword or a lungfish?

Oh my... I was unable to get it until I got a nice drink... And now I am laughing :) :D XD

However noone commented my first work yet. :(
Oh my socks, I didn't get it until you pointed out there was a joke. And now I can't choose whether to laugh or cry.

Oh, and your dwarf looks OK. It looks a little like every bit was drawn (or at least colored) separately, and pasted together, but otherwise it's very nice. The gold idol glitters like a very glittery gold idol.

DF General Discussion / Re: Underground Stuff in April
« on: March 17, 2009, 03:25:26 pm »
Naturally occurring underground forests, large underground caverns for no reason, antman hives in the chasms... There was a really long thread about all this in the suggestions forum. Several threads, I think.

On the whole undead thing, there are countless ways they can work. Just zombies come at least in varieties of necromantic zombie, spontaneous necromantic zombie, viral zombie and voodoo zombie. And there many ways to approach these. In short, our souls are different.

Not that there's anything wrong about arguing how the undead are supposed to work. Personally I await with curiosity how exactly they are going to turn up in Dwarf Fortress. Judging from some of the power goals, we are going to have fun with them.

If golems turn out to be soulless, unalive blobs of clay/iron/meat not unlike robots, but still able to learn, I think it'd be really cool if it could "grow" a soul, some kind of ghost in the machine, over the centuries, gain some personality, and perhaps eventually really become a sentient being. And then set out on a quest to find the Fairy Queen and become a real boy. That is, if we are going to have golems at all.

DF Bug Reports / Hovering dwarf?

One of my champions is stuck in the barracks. I can't look at him with v, and he has a light blue background. His task is displayed as "soldier" in the units menu. My theory is that someone threw him to the air while sparring, and he somehow forgot to land.

Running v0.28.181.40d, unmodded save for graphics, on Ubuntu Linux with Wine.

I think elves should mostly fight with bows and sneakiness. Give them a preference for ranged weapons and a guerilla fighting bonus in a forest, and they're suddenly a lot less wimpy. Elves attacking a human town would still have a disadvantage, but any armies sent to the forest to exterminate the elves would be likely to disappear without a trace. And since the elves seem to have no permanent buildings, running away and starting a new tree city elsewhere should be relatively easy. So any war against the elves would be a long and hopeless affair, where you aren't losing, but can't win either, at least without burning the whole forest down.

Also, I'd like to see elves (and kobolds) use metal weapons if they've managed to steal or buy any from the metalworking civs.

Also, I want to be able to send troops to burn the whole forest down if engaged in a war with elves in Fortress Mode.

World shape sounds like one of those things Toady might add eventually just because he can, but won't add any time soon because it doesn't really matter. And if he ever does, it will undoubtedly have a dozen world gen parameters to set general shape, size, curvature, coordinate system, direction and strength of gravity, properties of space and the value of π. If we have isometric graphics by then, maybe we can do fucked up Escher landscapes.

Oh, and SirHoneyBadger, at least one infinite flat fantasy world exists. The DnD Planescape campaign setting had the Outlands (I think it was called that), which supposedly stretched infinitely in every direction. And had an infinitely tall spire right in the middle. In Planescape, a lot of things are infinite.

Yeah, that thread looks awesome. Those would look so much better in a booshelf than the real boxes.

I think Tolkien mentioned them somewhere. Or, he mentioned some kind of fungi that dwarves eat, and I just made the obvious connection. I think he described it as tasting like some kind of bread maybe.

I don't think the player should have any direct control over cannibalism. Dwarves don't do that in normal conditions. Of course, having cannibalism in the game would immensely further the cause of unnecessarily gruesome realism, bot you shouldn't be able to simply order someone eaten, unless the race you are playing has no ethical problems with cannibalism.

At the moment, starving dwarves catch and eat vermin. It would be nice if this was extended to unprepared fish, unbutchered animal carcasses, rotten food, old boots and, possibly depending on personality traits, people. Cannibalism could also be tied to going berserk. Berserkers have already stopped caring about ethics or society or other silly things like that, and might as well eat the things they murder if they happen to be hungry.

In short, cannibalism should be like murder; something the dwarves just do occasionally with no direct player input.

You couldn't designate dwarves for buthcering, but you could still get some dwarves eaten, much like you can have dwarves murdered if you try. Just drop a bunch in a hole wihtout food and hope one of them has the required personality to kill and eat the others.

Oh, and related to this, if your race had no ethical qualms with cannibalism (or murder or whatever), you should be able to designate people for eating (or killing or whatever). It might still cause unhappiness, if the deceased was friends with anyone, but you should be able to do it.
