Okay, I obviously missed out on quite a bit of talking.  What's this about points?  And mods and patches or something?  Someone bring me up to speed here, I don't see a post where a particular mod was decided on and linked to.

I never cease to be amazed that for all the early-to-mid 90s games out there that absolutely refuse to run in modern Windows, especially 64x and 86x Windows, fucking Emperor of the Fading Suns works perfectly fine, sound included, with nothing but Compatibility Mode switched on.

Holy crap, lost some time there.

I vote for map #3.  All the House planets are roughly equidistant with room to expand, Leagueheim is somewhat centrally located for maximum resupply chances (as opposed to #5 where its stuck off in a corner), and most parts of the galaxy are relatively accessible from anywhere without any big separate arms.

Y'know, in all the times I've played the game, I don't think I've ever seen the Symbiotes actually do anything, except gobble up a bunch of towns for the first dozen turns.

I don't think a country ever leaves the council before the meeting.

This is something me and Janet experimented with a little, to make sure we got the mechanics down. The only thing so far that seems to make a country leave the council besides max panic at the end of the month is ignoring a terror mission. And you pretty much need to try to do that.

Yes, it is entirely possible to have a country leave mid-month, by getting it's Panic rating through the roof.  Bear in mind that failing a Terror Mission counts the same as ignoring it.  That's what happened to me, when Argentina refused to leave for like four months, but then had a total wipeout.

Glad to see I'm spoken for.  Totally in, totally as House Hawkwood again.  Hawkwood 4 lyfe yo.  Or maybe not, I'm flexible.  And since I learned quite a few things about how the game actually works last time around, I shouldn't do as much stupid shit this time.

I'm cool for going with a mod, although I know nothing about either one.  I'll read up on them.  Ambivalent on the randomized map, since the random map tends to have some schizophrenic warp-gate layouts, but I can deal with that if everyone else wants it.

I forget how Rebellion and the Plague work, but I say we leave them on because that sounds awesome.  Let's make this a proper Machiavelli-inspired strategy game.  And Universal Warehouse off is fine by me.

I actually thought I had finally turned the tables on the Thin Men.  Then they killed two squaddies in two turns, and the last remaining squaddie panicked and shot the VIP for some unfathomable reason.  Welp.

Considering this was our third mission on the ground, I'm just going to write this universe off.

It makes me wonder why the people of the world would cut funding for Humanity's last hope.

The ending cinematic makes it very clear why.

Spoiler: Speaking of which. (click to show/hide)

Lessons Learned:

Build workshops immediately.
Don't build more equipment than you actually need.
Be fucking cautious at all times.
Keep a satellite or two in reserve.

This really was an exploratory first run, and most of my confusion came from expecting the game to work more like the original.  I'll be hitting the ground running next time.

You're left with a Brit, A South African and an Australian? My god, it could be a sitcom! Quickly someone check if we can get the rights to it.

You could build entire episodes from them arguing about accents.

I actually had four more soldiers in the pipe when I took that screenshot, and launched a third satellite over America.  I still have six nations threatening to leave and a council meeting in four days.

And now, a Terror Mission in Cordoba.  One sniper and four rookies, heavy armor, basic weapons.  Rally men of Earth, to death and glory.

Oh God, it's even at a military base.  The aliens are taunting me now, they just blew up some generalissimo's stronghold and are waiting for me to walk in.

That last one was just absolutely pathetic.  Two different assaulters missing a Muton with shotguns at point-blank range.  Everybody panicking everywhere.  Guys in heavy armor dropping like flies to one hit a piece.

It's happened to me in other games.  I deal easily with the "real" threats like Mutons and Chryssalids, and then the "joke" enemy mops the floor with me due to, I guess, bad luck.  The poison is meaningless, it's the way they just never fucking miss, and never get hit.  This mission, I saw four people unload reaction fire on one Thin Man who jumped through a window.  All four of them missed, and proceeded to kill squaddie with extra armor in half cover from across a room.

But now... Now I know the game is cheating.  I finally finished a mission... And I get an Abduction notice when the Skyranger is three seconds away from landing.  Meaning I must ignore it.  Great, that's just great.

I refuse to accept this.  First these damn Thin Men selective choose what they want to use Overwatch fire on.  Then they free nail targets in full cover from all the way across the map.  That didn't actually kill anybody, it just set off a panic of chain reaction that saw two squaddies kill each other.
Thin Men don't even bother me anymore, other than their poison spit clouds. It's hard to take them seriously when one jumps into the map from above...right into the sight lines of five elite soldiers on Overwatch. I don't think the poor bastard even had time to realize the mistake he made :P

I really don't get this.  Everyone else acts like Thin Men are some big joke who dance around and get popped like skeets.  Every single mission I've faced them in saw at least half the squad die, if it didn't turn into a total wipeout.  I've lost more soldiers to Thin Men than every other threat combined.  This can't just be bad luck.
They're a threat at first, for sure. Much bigger than the Sectoids. Thing is, after a while you get to the point where your skills and equipment are more than a match for them, and they cease to become anything more than an annoyance.

I'm never going to get to that point, because fucking skinny bastards keep killing all my good soldiers and botching my critical missions.

It's a hell of a Catch 22 that all spirals around balding men with ugly glasses.

So, the Vice Presidential debate is on...is anyone actually watching it?  I'm going to skip it, myself.

I would hope so.  I love that the Republican "math guy" hasn't said a damn thing about math this whole time except trying to psychically channel how big a pussy every nameless badguy in the world must think Obama is.

So, John just married Tavros.  Oh boy.

Look at that art.  I can't believe people (me) gave this guy two and half million dollars.
