General Discussion / Re: You can rent anything in Japan
« on: January 12, 2009, 04:58:53 pm »
EDIT:  No, not mass-consumerism.  I was referring to the absolutely absurd and almost entirely cheese-stuffed ideas coming from that general location.  I think we started them off on it some time after the war, and they just ran with it.  And they did so in a scary-fast fashion.

Ah yes, that part.  Japan learns very quickly from it's conquerors.  Ever since the 1970s the entire nation seems to have dedicated itself to staying on the cutting edge of absolute insanity.

Also, inflatable barbecue?  MUST.  ACQUIRE.  Hell, that's even better than the inflatable sheep sex doll.

So that you too can grill and eat cheeseburgers without ever leaving the pool.  I sometimes wonder about the Chinese slaves who assemble these things, if they know what it is they're building or where it's going.  Does the man who puts the decal on the box cry himself to sleep, images of fat, lazy, happy people burned into retinas?  Or does not comprehend it all, completely unaware that he lives on the same planet as people whose leading cause of death is getting too much fry oil clogged in their hearts?

That being a reference to anything having to do with killer whales anymore, compared to their brief surge of popularity in the public consciousness in the early '90s.

Ahh, Japan...  The only place with people who manage to be more American than the Americans.

What part of that is supposed to reference Americans?  That Japanese buy useless crap?  That's hardly an activity we invented, and Americans would never spend money to hang around a cat for an hour.

We buy inflatable barbecues thank you very much.

You would be surprised at how much machinery changes to survive in such harsh environments.

Rolling some dice at hand just for kicks, I'm deciding that you've mined into glaciers and permafrost before.  Mostly just to rule out the idiocy of sending a guy all the way to Mars who doesn't have any relevant experience to his job.

I'm still alive, just haven't had a chance to sit down with DF lately.  I am through Spring though.  Dadamh has already chewed me out.

Voting Vin Diesel.  The man has his favorite D&D character's name tattooed on his back.  That's awesome.

Gotta say Other, Bug Report as well, even though it wasn't a bug.  Something about dyed bags.

I had already been lurking for a month or so, and decided after I made an account that I may as well be active.  Of course, now I'm on a DF funk, and I haven't posted north of DF General Discussion in weeks.

I like the Penny Arcade articles as well. Tycho Brahe is quite well versed. Again, I hardly ever agree with his sentiments, but they deserve respect due to his ability at delivering a point. I would have preferred to have never seen his real photo though. The illusion of anonymity gives more power to the writer.

I'd like to agree with this sentiment with a couple of my favorites-

Quote from: Jerry Holkins
...when someone squeezes some Goddamn spider silk out of a goat's titty it's the kind of thing one expects to hear about... I'm making goofy jokes about it because I think that we are a young species that often fucks with things we don't know how to unfuck. It's a coping mechanism.

...

People seem to think that by posting in threads and agreeing with other people they are changing the world. They are not. They are posting in threads online. The universe will not be altered by forum threads, even those which are very wry. Being outraged online is a form of entertainment, and refreshing a thread to receive a hit of consensus packs the thrill of genuine activism without requiring any sweat. I'm afraid this test may require more from the community than a sardonic jpeg.

But I must agree about having seen the pictures of them being rather disappointing, both for anonymity, and the disturbing reality check they bring.  Mike Krahulik (Gabe) looks like the epitome of the pasty pencil-necked basement-dwelling gamer we all fear ourselves to be.  Jerry (Tycho) looks, by his own description, like something that crawled out of a vat.  That they're both married with children is both astounding and inspiring, until you remember that they are now also very, very rich.

Since Antlia hasn't been active since early December either, I propose a new rule.

If the next person in line has been inactive for more than a month, only wait 3 days for them.  Hopefully that'll get more people in.

Or maybe, if another person is skipped after Antlia, scrap the list and announce a restart, since most people signed up weeks or months ago.

As long as we're going to plug general webcomics to archive-binge, you must all read the entirety of Schlock Mercenary.  Not the Basic Training link, the First Page link.

It's a semi-hard, space-opera comedy about a talking pile crap, an author-insert mad scientist, and bone headed mercenaries in the year 3000.  It's also been updated every single day since August of 2000, with a contextual punchline in every strip, all written by a Mormon tech-support man.

Actual published authors consider it once of the finest works of modern fiction you can read.  And I met the author of that, also at A-Kon 18.  Incredibly cool and personable geek, who was stuck open-miking in front of 300 pissed off otaku, and knocked them dead with a barrage of nerd comedy.

Well, it took me a goddamn week and a lot of whining, but I got it done with an all-nighter.  Might be some speelin probblems.  I also fear I made some of the challenges too hard.  I hope the combination of little success and long wait didn't cost too many people.

... You're totally going to Boredom-Insanity me into walking around unprotected outside, aren't you? >_<

Not if you manage to kill yourself in there first.  Honestly, I didn't think about how many actual turns it might take for someone to find you.

Why unprotected though? Surely some of the more numerous food items would have been stored in large thick plastic bags for ease of transportation? Wrap one around yourself, use something to store a little bit of extra air, and you have a mini pressure suit good for several minutes...  that's, of course, when all other options run out.

On the other hand, something that ridiculous would be pretty awesome too.

I need to, like, make a spacesuit out of the food.

He who lives by the fridge, dies of boredom by the fridge.

Also, Asheron, if you're here, I don't have an action from you.  Madness ahoy if I'm done before you.
