Damn that's cool.  However, repeat firing at high elevation causes disastrous misloads.

I wish I had some kind of skill with these things.  I'm an organizer, not an engineer.

This was almost invariably a fake papyrus beard, even for men.  Egyptians of the day were not hairy sorts.  Interestingly, this tradition started after they met the Greeks, who sported tremendous beards to man, and I guess the Pharaoh just felt inadequate.

Say, now that's an idea.  Human diplomats wearing fake beards, so the dwarves don't think they're wimps.

Life Advice / Re: Cramming for exams
« on: November 15, 2008, 03:37:59 pm »
I'm the last person in the world to ask for advice on studying.  I don't.  Like, at all.  I take extensive and meticulous notes during lectures, which my photographic memory then gives me material to work with.  But if outside reading is required I'm doomed.  Usually I speed-read as much material as I can the day or so before the exam.

Essays work the same way for me.  I've turned in exactly one assignment on time this semester.  I don't expect to pass anything with better than a C, and I may have already failed one class.  I've got a paper to write by tomorrow afternoon (got to leave it at the office during the weekend or it'll be too late to accept), do some homework and study for a Spanish test by Monday, and find and read a couple books by Wednesday, ready to talk about my research for ten minutes.  Oh and I've got a forum game to polish off and bail out of.

I'm almost afraid to ask, but does that word mean "plan"?

No, it means 'Griflibrisfriblim'.  It's an incomprehensible language you know.

Kobolds don't use maces or hammers, so no graphic tile is needed for macemen or hammermen. In addition, all non-kobold jobbed immigrants have skull icons too.

As long as the military equipping menu works the same way, they certainly can use maces and hammers.  In fact, I added stone clubs to my copy of the mod.

Actually, I can probably draw them in myself.

EDIT: Macekobolds and Hammerkobolds.

I just realized that the macekobold looks like a cubone.

Ironmen do show up in caves sometimes, though I haven't seen one since the 33* versions.  Maybe they're just rarer now.  I don't think wizards were ever meant to show up except in the abortive protoversions when Toady has some sort of placeholder magic in the game.

I think some creatures just have too picky biome requirements to show up.  I've never seen a strangler or foul blendec.  So I modded them to show up more often.

I just noticed that your graphic sheet has no pictures for kobold hammermen or macemen.  They can't embark with them, but they can certainly get them.

Man, the mod reminded me just why carp are so hated.  With no steady booze supply I'm losing another fool every month.  Guess I'll have make them go back to the temple pool.

Speaking of which, I'm noticing that the finite water source my kobolds are drinking from isn't getting any smaller.  Is that normal?

Has no one noted the Three Toe Stories yet? These are the ultimate cannon for the Armokverse, and in these it is shown that dwarves- all dwarves- have incredible facial-hair growing prowess.

Where does it say anything about all dwarves?  Everyone in the story is male.

Those are some awesome graphics man.  Ninjas, Luchadors, Thieves, Nobles, just so great.  I especially love the kobold highwayman with the poncy hat.  If I can think of a way, I want to use that as an avatar.

Well, with this turn, I'll have completed all of four rounds in two months.  I wouldn't worry about scheduling conflicts that far out.

Beards and hair lost in combat should have some indication of looking bad. If the only indication was length, you'd end up with dwarves going into combat and coming back with a clean shave.
"Hey, Urist, why did you shave your beard?"
"I didn't, I got ambushed by goblins and that was the best they could do."
"They did a better job than any human I've ever seen."

This is an excellent suggestion.  If hair can and is meant to be cut, the method and quality should be reflected in some way.  Goblin scalpers causing tantrum spirals will be a truly great threat.

As for long drapes of arm hair, any hair coded into the game should probably have a length limit. You don't see people with drapes of arm hair for a reason.

I've been awake for two days, my imagination is getting away with me.

I do however have a grandmother who lost her eyebrows, and had them replaced with hairplugs.  Hairplugs from her scalp, so she has to trim her eyebrows or they grow like bangs.  That vignette wasn't related to anything.

I was just joking, Aqizzar.

S'cool.

I just had a disturbing thought.  Just how much hair is Toady planning to implement?

I was specifically thinking of something like long drapes of arm-hair.

Well, whichever way Toady goes, the female dwarves in my games won't have them. The idea of women with beards just bugs me too much. *shrug*
Have some respect for foreign cultures, dude.  Just because woman don't have beards where you live doesn't mean other cultures don't like it.  Do you want an entire civilization to behave according to your personal likes and dislikes?

Political correctness can go too far.  Considering he's talking about a civilization of his own imagining, yes he can forbid bearded women if he wants.

Personally I don't care.  Bearded dwarven women makes since to me as a fantasy differentiation.  And with all the new modding potential I probably won't be playing with 'dwarves' much anyway.

I like that dapper fellow on the left.  I hope that's what nobles really look like.  The goblins are also great, very vicious.

I knew the iDwarf was only a matter of time.

I would recommend Kobold Camp (thought of starting a community fort myself) but it's hard to grapple.  I'm a pretty experienced player and I've yet to have a camp survive one season.  Mostly because I insist on embarking on caves or major rivers, but otherwise it'd just be boring.

I've found a fun and completely in-character starting location.  Human town ruins.  All the wood you need with the entertaining benefit of random collapses.

Who would've though that semi-sentient komodo dragon thieves would be so thin skinned?  These kobolds turn unhappy at the drop of a log.
