DF General Discussion / Re: Future of the Fortress 4
« on: July 11, 2008, 08:40:10 pm »
kidnappees escape.  Excellent.  I was genuinely worried about that whole problem of goblin towers with fifty elves and two goblins.

And oh boy, religious wars.  I wonder what kind of criteria starts them?  I suppose we'll have to generate a whole bunch of worlds and figure out which spheres are considered hostile to each other.  Unless it's in the raws somewhere.  Oh I hope it's in the raws.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dwarven Fashion Tendencies?

No, but it doubtless gives them a big happy thought from admirring their own fine duds lately.

When I first saw the thread title, I thought this would be about things like dwarves wearing one bronze low boot and a kitten leather sandal with a bloody giant cave spider silk sock.

This plan would no doubt fail.  They'll all reach legendary and sit around drawing pictures of each other drawing pictures.

You're coming into this with a traditional RPG mindset, yeah.  There are no 'drops' or 'lewt' in DF.  There are tradable items in goblin towers though, along with everything they're wearing.  Human towns, and especially abandoned forts, are the other great sources of stuff.  Bear in mind that adventurers can't get the Appraiser skill, so you'll never know what any stuff's worth.

There are no ruins anymore.  That was a 2D feature and it was funky to say the least.  You will occasionally find pregenerated towns and settlements where all the inhabitants died in worldgen, so they'll look perfectly normal, just lifeless.  Something like ruins are coming in the next version though (any day now), so don't worry.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The weight of years.
« on: July 11, 2008, 06:55:42 pm »
Something I've wondered about for a while when poking though the raw files.

I have no idea if there's any way to check a dwarf's age, and I assume it's randomly generated within a certain limit when they enter the map (probably between childhood and the begining of the age-death check, 100 for dwarves).

So, has anybody ever seen a dwarf die of old age?

General Discussion / Re: A quote is a quote is a quote

51061 characters, 8867 words, at six inches wide it's 1386 lines.  No idea what the total number of quotes is.  I've been collecting them for the better part of ten years, accross three computers and multiple reformats, since the first time I played Scorched Earth and started typing down the little war-related quotes it ended with.  Specifically these-

Not with dreams but with blood and iron, shall a nation be molded at last.
-Swinburne

The grim fact is that we prepare for war like precocious giants and for peace like retarded pygmies.
-Lester Pearson

The essence of war is violence. Moderation in war is imbecility.
-Fisher

Providence is always on the side of the big battalions.
-Sevigne

Give me the money that has been spent in war, and ... I will clothe every man, woman and child in attire of which kings and queens would be proud.
-Henry Richard

War is a matter of vital importance to the State; the province of life or death; the road to survival or ruin. It is mandatory that it be throughly studied.

DF Modding / Re: Some silk-related modding
« on: July 11, 2008, 06:30:02 pm »
Hmm...  If you cave cats [WEBBER], would they snare vermin in silk?  That might work.

Actually, vermin hunting is a hard-coded activity.  Cats aren't really fighting vermin, since vermin aren't really creatures.  That said, they would squirt webs at kobolds and such.  If you stick WEBBER on hoary marmots or groundhogs or something and hunt them, that'd get you some webs.  And sticky hunters.

Oh boy, quotes.  Let's start where a discussion of quotes always should.

The most original authors are not so because they advance what is new, but because they put what they have to say as if it had never been said before.
-Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Since so many quotes seem to revolve around conflict and strife...

I've got better things to do with my time than to kill someone I don't know over things I don't care about.
-Steven Wright

People who have shit to lose shouldn't hang out with people who don't have shit to lose, 'cause people who don't have shit to lose will lose your shit for you.
-D.L. Hughley

The only difference between depression and disapointment is your level of commitment.
-Marc Maron

Any commander who fails to exceed his authority is not of much use to his subordinates.
-Arleigh Burke

Hope has two beautiful daughters. Their names are anger and courage; anger at the way things are, and courage to see that they do not remain the way they are.
-St. Augustine of Hippo

An authoritarian leader is perched upon a painstakingly constructed authoritarian structure and only because we have an exaggerated sense of personal power in our personality-obsessed culture do we imagine that tyranny resides within the tyrant.
-Tony Karon

Of course, this conjures up Winston Churchill's famous phrase when he said -- don't quote me on this, okay? I don't want to be quoted on this, so don't quote me.  He said, "sometimes the truth is so precious it must be accompanied by a bodyguard of lies."
- Donald Rumsfeld (Not to be political; I just think it's funny.)

And one that should be present in every discussion of important issues-

People seem to think that by posting in threads and agreeing with other people they are changing the world. They are not. They are posting in threads online. The universe will not be altered by forum threads, even those which are very wry. Being outraged online is a form of entertainment, and refreshing a thread to receive a hit of consensus packs the thrill of genuine activism without requiring any sweat.  I'm afraid this test may require more from the community than a sardonic jpeg.
-Jerry Holkins

I've got a freaking 105Kb txt file of these things.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Does ice melting work?
« on: July 11, 2008, 06:07:12 pm »
Yep, there's your problem.  Setting temperature off makes magma effectively harmless.  Really, if there's no temperature, how is the ice supposed to melt?

Be careful turning it back on though.  If the ice is right in contact with the magma, then you're gonna get a lot of steam when physics starts working again.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Music?
« on: July 11, 2008, 03:28:22 pm »
I just listen to whatever I have on hand and feel like listening to.  I've never found themed music to be of much importance to me when playing something.  I also idly watch TV while playing stuff.

Sometimes it'll be my rotating library of stand-up comedy.  Music will be what ever I'm not bored with.  On the playlist right now - Disturbed's Into the Fire, Pennywise's Bro Hymn, and Blue Oyster Cult's Godzilla.  On the subject of videogame music though I now have the urge to fire up Project Chaos again.  Thanks for that.

Pretty sure that one would go to Tentacle Demons.  Eh?  Eh?

Yay!  I get to be the first one to say it!  They look big penises lol!!11!

No seriously, those are some proper looking giant mushrooms.  I might have given them spots or something, but still great.  Ditto on the other three, especially the goblets, looks like a coat of arms.

EDIT: Damn.  Beat'd.

EDIT2: TWICE!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Did I Mess Up My DF Experience?
« on: July 10, 2008, 04:13:35 am »
Yeah, coming into DF by way of Boatmurdered is a little misleading.  It's famous because it crashed and burned, and kept burning, so spectacularly.  Not to mention the internals of the game have changed a bit since then.  To get a really impressive fortress detonation usually requires the player to do it himself, unless you accidently set up the right conditions.

That being said, since you're just in the second year, you haven't had a chance to run into many problems yet.  The goblins will come soon enough.  And nobles.  And then the Baron.  And eventually he'll mandate something you can't possibly provide, sentence some shmuck peasent who's spent too much time in the meeting hall making far too many friends to a couple hammerings, he'll get clobbered into paste, and then you'll get to see a proper tantrum spiral as everyone turns sullen and get's their IFF scrambled.

Then you'll start your next fort on a glacier looking for a challenge, and before long, you're tunneling strait to the HFS to see what happens.  Disaster is a serious addiction.

DF Bug Reports / Re: Booze Bomb crash
« on: July 10, 2008, 03:59:19 am »
My only guess would be you literally blew up the program.  It's probably choking on all the calculations of temperature changes, force pushes, flying bits, damage checks, and mood alterations of the dwarves.

I hate to say this, but have you considered trying a smaller bomb?  Savescum and work your way up in size until you hit the breakpoint.  You may have found some sort of memory limitation or buffer overflow.
