I was digging a big tunnel from the forested area where I had my initial outpost and farming center to the higher, mountainous section where I plan to build my primary fortress, and my miners smashed right into the upper level of an underground river. It was above the water line, so no damp stone warning. A mob of lizardmen and snakemen instantly poured out and slaughtered two experienced miners, leaving me with five citizens to produce enough wealth to attract some immigrants. Not to mention a tunnel full of murderous reptiles.
It was a tiny river, too. It appeared out of nowhere, and poured almost immediately into a bottomless pit. Any significant distance to either side, and I'd have missed it completely.
