General Discussion / Re: Railgun and Spirituality Discussion

Religious faith can have different meanings depending on the context and perspective e.g. for some it is just a way of life or a support system e.g. people who experienced trauma and grief may seek comfort, support from a community, and way to come with terms with what happen and find new purpose possibly like the Ukrainians you mentioned above.

Otherwise how about faith in yourself/spouse/kids? Optimism? Hope?

Your concept of trust and faith seem different on paper (one is confidence in something based on evidence or past experience the other is belief without requiring evidence or proof) but in practice I think they have a lot in common. We know that its not information and understanding that drives the average joe political\ethical belief system, so isn't it fair to say that the vast majority of people political views are faith like blind trust and fallback to familiar dogmatism they were raised on?

I believe that what you really have an issue with is religion resistance to change.

It's more interesting when you realize Science predates the Scientific Method.
More so when people realize our epistemic limitations and how often people claiming facts are widely over-reaching with enthusiastic interpretation. Especially in social science which deals with human emotions and behaviors and involve numerous variables that are often unpredictable or beyond our control.

Many social issues are wicked problems characterized by complexity, uncertainty and lack of clear cut solutions, these include things like poverty or climate change, we all know they exist but we don't know what the best way to solve the, only faith-based approaches that involve subjective perceptions of situation, values, needs and wants.

A Computer Generated Swatting Service Is Causing Havoc Across America
https://www.vice.com/en/article/k7z8be/torswats-computer-generated-ai-voice-swatting

Quote
Swatting is when someone calls in a bogus threat in an attempt to direct law enforcement resources to a particular home, school, or other location. Often, swatting calls result in heavily armed police raiding an innocent victim’s home. At least one case has resulted in police killing the unsuspecting occupant.

Torswats carries out these threatening calls as part of a paid service they offer. For $75, Torswats says they will close down a school. For $50, Torswats says customers can buy “extreme swattings,” in which authorities will handcuff the victim and search the house. Torswats says they offer discounts to returning customers, and can negotiate prices for “famous people and targets such as Twitch streamers.” Torswats says on their Telegram channel that they take payment in cryptocurrency.
[..]
Motherboard’s reporting on Torswats comes as something of a nationwide swatting trend spreads across the United States. In October, NPR reported that 182 schools in 28 states received fake threat calls. Torswats’ use of a computer generated voice also comes as the rise of artificial intelligence poses even greater risks to those who may face harassment online. In February, Motherboard reported that someone had doxed and harassed a series of voice actors by having an artificial intelligence program read out their home addresses. Motherboard has also long reported on the threat posed by deepfakes, which are artificially generated videos of people, often without their consent. Deepfakes started as a tool to create non-consensual pornography of specific people.

@Starver, do ASI or even AGI exist? Otherwise as previously noted, on scale of 0 to AI overlord there are many dangers that needs to be highlighted and thought over. Also I assume that people here read beyond the headlines.

Last I checked cargo ships aren't very maneuverable, and as noted China have many more ships that are more suited for this.

Otherwise, you haven't answered the main question, and if there will be an escalation leading to ww3 no one will care about finger pointing.

its a 21 IT guy. I am not surprised, we can often be invisible, although in the intelligence departments usually there are escorts for outsiders.

It also helps to realize what a Blockade actually is.
I'd suggest looking it up on Wikipedia
True, China view Taiwan as its sovereign territory and does not accept that any other nation has the right to interfere with its attempts to regulate its trade or customs arrangements. Thus the term 'quarantine' which imply that no state of war exists between belligerent nations would be more appropriate (coined by USA with Cuban missile crisis)

In their view this is no different than USA getting in the midst of Spain spat with Catalan. And many would agree particularly since China is the top trading partner of everyone around and more than 120 countries worldwide, which is why I think that unlike the invasion scenario this will get much less international support for USA efforts.

jipehog, physically enforcing the blockade means firing on ships that try to go through. Or boarding them. It will be China who will need to make a decision to escalate and open fire on American vessels, which I doubt because if they are willing to do that, than they may as well start an invasion.

I doubt that China would have any problem in controlling maritime access of cargo ships to Taiwan. While USA could actively try to challenge the quarantine using its shipping but what happens when China simply park several ships in their path what will USA escorts do then?

Better question is would USA dare escalation over Taiwan in the first place if China declares that as redline and such action would lead to escalate into space and nuclear domain?

China have a bigger navy what if they put in the way and warn USA off and otherwise ignore it.

How would USA 'contest' and attempt to 'lift' the blockade? Try ram Chinese ships or start a shooting war?

No, China doesn't have a larger navy. They have more hulls but a lot of those are corvettes and frigates, total tonnage (or the number of missiles+aircrafts on active ships) tell a different story.  What is more important, American Navy has centuries of experience refining its doctrines which the young Chinese navy lacks. Also, I was comparing to the USSR which had very modest navy in 1968, not to China

You want me to predict hypothetical events. I am saying that USA has steps to take which are far less drastic than declaring war. And sending its ships to Taiwan with "we dare you to try anything" message is a logical step.

non of that matter unless these step involve starting a shooting war, and yes many corvettes and frigates seem more useful to physically enforce a blockade than fancy aircraft carriers.

I suspect that USA would avoid any escalation over Taiwan (with which it have no longer a defense treaty) for the same reason you don't see NATO planes flying over Ukraine. Because if a shooting war does start, all it would take is one hypersonic anti-ship missile to sink an aircraft carrier for full blown war with nuclear power.  Also keep in mind that China would be operating near its mainland with its air and missile force in range.

EDIT: This is a very different scenario from China invading, and USA engage in proxy war by providing Taiwan arms.

If China peruse a blockade until USA influence is removed. Relevant unilateral measure by USA:
 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuban_Missile_Crisis#Blockade

Such a move would generate FAR less international support than an invasion. And I doubt that USA would declare war on a nuclear power as evident by events in Ukraine, likely it would seek to build international diplomatic pressure but avoid any escalatory measures (the freedom of navigation around Crimea stopped after the UK destroyer was fired upon).

By my reckoning, faith ought to be rational - even when making unsubstantiated claims, there should be internal consistency. An all-loving God should not act out of hatred or pettiness, and so on.
What do you mean by faith?

European space agency is about to lunch a mission to Jupiter's icy moons including Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. Apparently they have one second launch window

You are on to something, Mondays.. are like black holes sucking away all the energy, could be that they are the source of dark energy?

Never heard of it tbh, I thought it was a wolf like the one on the plane (should have payed attention to the blue on the flag). Make sense now that I seen the headlines about the Taiwanese air force badge in the wake of Chinese military exercise.

Btw what will happen if China instead of invading Taiwan blockade it. How would USA respond?

Hmmm.. I can't figure out is that snub to XI? or a snub to image of winnie the pooh used for presenting the Wolf Warrior instead?

Correct me if I am wrong but aren't wolf warriors are regarded as very nationalistic sort of Fox crowd?

Its a tv-show which takes place in the midst of struggle between Atheist and Theist society. Where the main protagonist is a guardian angel, an android that can fly, have sonar mapping, shoot lighting from the eyeballs and other cool stuff. Dreams too iirc. Jumped to my head when reading Roland comment in this thread.
