DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: FPS death
« on: June 05, 2015, 03:34:39 am »
However, a common myth is that more items=lower FPS, but this just isn't so.

It is so.

Could it be both? 3 to 4k of logs sitting out in the open, getting updated every time it rains, a few hundred open stock pile slots looking at eack of the 20k items at a few hundred calculations per second involving pathfinding,  temperature, coatings, ect.  It seems like lots of items will eat your fps. It just takes above 7k or so to start being an issue, depending on location, type, ect.

For me below 20 tends to be unplayable. things just take so bloody long.

Apparently Tennessee is reintroducing cursive writing to its grade school cirriculum, and not to the history cirriculum either. I can't imagine any situation in which a person would need to know this; granted there are still a lot of situations in which people are expected to sign their names in cursive, but if we keep humoring them this outmoded practice will never be phased out (cursive signitures that is, cursive itself has already been phased out most other places). The only time somebody should be learning cursive in school is if they're a college student majoring in history who will need to be reading a lot of old documents.

why do people think fiction is real

like

they use terminator as an argument against AI

they use jurassic park as an argument against genetics

they're just movies goddamn

Yeah, especially since Jurassic Park wasn't even really about genetics anyway (though it may have been intended to be), it was more about badly designed zoos. It's fundamentally no different from when those people in San Francisco got mauled by tigers that got out of their enclosures
I
You mean like the constitution, the bill of rights and other historical documents?

Magma sea below, water-filled cavern above.
This is the mother of all cancelation spam.
(found a way to disable it on the wiki)

WEll, at least obsidian casting is easy.  Though, you CAN edit the pause function, and even the fact that it will send you a message. Look in "announcements" file under the init folder, and find this:
[CAVE_COLLAPSE:A_D:D_D:P:R]
P caused the game to pause, and "R" causes it to recenter.

Change it to this: [CAVE_COLLAPSE:A_D:D_D]

A_D and D_D determine whether or not an announcement is given at the bottom of the screen at all.  A_D is for adventure mode, and D_D is for Dwarf mode.

Apparently Indiana University's rugby coach is named "Sopa Enari". That's a rather unfortunate name. That's like if somebody was named "Fugitiveslaveact Jones" or "Indianremovalact Smith".
Seriously, SOPA was a horrible bill and deserved to die but isn't this comparison a bit like the "nerd blackface" thing people on le Reddit trot out about Big Bang Theory?

It's also just generally a simple combination of syllables that occurs in a lot of languages meaning things like "soup", "sweep", and "it hurts".

Speaking of which... Can someone explain to me why blackface is considered so much worse than any other case in which a person of one race plays a member of a different race, including other cases where the race being portrayed is one that has been historically discriminated against.

Why is it that if I dressed up in blackface people would be extremely offended, but if I dressed up like an asian or a latino then people would be only mildly offended, if at all.
because there are politically powerful groups who habe profited from African American history. Moreso than anyother group.

Yeah, it's probably best if you just pass on it.  You'll just become hopelessly addicted like the rest of us and all other games will suddenly seem shallow and unfulfilling.  You'll spend several nights building a perfect fortress from some of the great youtube guides only to lose it to a failed engineering experiment.  You'll become frustrated and obsessed with next one... and the next one... and the next one...

Just because a lot of us are working on an 120z level golden cock and balls doesnt make us addicts.

What if you remove hauling jobs for all but the queen and let her sell tose armor stands?
You know, I've never thought of that, but that could actually work. I mean, she would probably violate her own mandate, but as a queen she can't get convicted. And the platinum statues would deal with the bad thought in no time.
It would be a little bit fiddly with disabling jobs on about 150 non-military dwarves, but what do I have Dwarf Therapist for.
Some of the armor stands are made of platinum though, so I probably can't sell them all in one go.
Oh, and I agree, the battle axes aren't that bad.

You could use DF hack to autodump them into a square next to the dept, THEN sell them.

Again, I could write an essay on this, with separate chapters titled "Plot", "Fetishes", "Encounters", "Rules", and probably more.
Do go on, my good sir. A greentext format might be, hmmm, most preferrable, wouldn't you say, old chap?

I don't quite know how I'd be able to sum it up in greentext form, but I could try. I can't imagine it would be all that great though.

ON the first row of icons, on the far right, is a "change color" Drop box. Either change it then type, or highlight yoru text, then select it.

Heh, shamans. The majority of one of my local newspaper's classifieds are for shamans. Seriously, two-to-three pages for mystics, and only one page for everything else. They all use the same symbols, and sometimes even the same portrait of their "shaman". Either that or one dude has a lot of jobs in the mystic industry.

Or just don't actually lock or delete anything and just threaten that "if you don't pay us money then you'll be cursed forever by professional Siberian shamans and you'll never get laid again".

I wonder how many people would actually pay money in that case...

As a practicing witch who knows 6 other practicing witches that could ALL run circles around him? I wouldn't.

I had a 13z level cliff, but for some reason the drinsk ran out. I couldn't figure out why people were thirsty. It turns our the river was on top of the cliff, and i failed to realize it.  80/100 dead dwarves later, the survivors rush to the river to drink.

Exactly same argument can be made about bugs. You do not want to leave bugs as is, because later they will be interwined with code, masked and generally being pain in ass. I mean, even more than they usually are.

Very simplified example: you have some bug in function a() that always returns incorect number - lower by one. Instead of fixing that function (WHY ARMOK WHY you would do that??) you just add one to result of a() in fuction that call it.

Now later you finally fix that buggy a(). BAM, every place that calls a() is now bugged, as it will have number too big by one. YAY!

Yes, it is simplified and this particular example never would happen in real life, but it shows pretty well why it is terrible idea.

YOu mean, you want a perfect system that will eventually be tossed out anyway? You see, that is what we're saying.  Those bugs are livable.  WE'd rather him put his time into building a game that will support a NEW system that won't have those bugs.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Getting more elven pets?
« on: May 24, 2015, 03:50:01 am »
Thanks for the replies, guys!
So I get that variety is fixed at embark, but to get more of whatever animals are already available, should I buy something and give them a huge profit or just outright "offer" them free stuff. The wiki is vague/uncertain about what "offer" does with other civilizations.

I'd say you're better off giving them a huge profit margin. The thing is we're not sure what offer does to other civilizations anyway.

I looked at my nobles in my town. Something li ke 99% of them are goblins, but when i looked at the civ history, all i get is "Goblin has become a noble in xxxx" There is no mention of a site getting conquered.

Use Legends Viewer or World Viewer.  That tends to make things simpler.

Odds are good that what happened was that your dwarven civ conquered a goblin site, and dwarvenized the goblins.  Then, because goblins, if they are ever accepted into dwarf or human lands, never starve or die of old age, they tend to take over and build up insane skill levels while they're at it.  Enjoy your legendary lyemaker goblin king of dwarves.

ah, that makes sense. I was wondering just because I did check legends viewer, and there was nothing about a civ being conquered in either direction. It was just "So and so goblin whatever has joined "the warm spears."
