Oh that makes sense. The graphics aren't all caught up with Toady's new editions in the last update. Do we want to wait for the graphics to update? Or just continue on?

I'm zooming right ahead. How many caverns are there, by the way? I embarked on a volcano, and the first one revealed the magma sea.

Edit: Wait, there's 2. I see that now.

I like doing metals rare as a game mechanic - it makes "rare" metals actually rare.  A full golden temple would have to either embark on a place where there's a vein of the stuff, or be really successful trading for gold items.  However, with the economy broken, that might be too much of a challenge.

I'll be looking more at a temple's "flow" and specific architectural aesthetics than I will for quantity of ornamentation or valuable materials anyway.  Bonus points to appropriate special nicknames and titles of the clergy and attention to structural detail (supported walls/floors, pillars, arches, ect...).

So, what about those of us who have to do smaller embarks?

Or even caverns, since a lot of us are going to have FPS issues.

A smaller world is better, because some of us are going to be facing FPS as the major challenge.

THat is true. I'm going to have to on a 2x2, no matter what. Though, What do you think about metals? high?

Are we going for multi level structures here? Or just single level ones, and so the all have to be designated as a temple?

Before I made the world where I bought my shiny new whatever this instrument is from the elves, I was hunting for a nice site to embark on. Found what I thought would be perfect -- until I went to do the whole 'prepare carefully' thing, and took a look at the missing items list.

There was no anvil available. What?

Apparently it was an area utterly devoid of iron, which meant no anvils, and no steel. I did not know that was possible.

I panicked, aborted, and made a new world, but I kinda regret not saving it to give out as a challenge kinda thing.

That is you civ that had no iron. The world likely has it.

I'm making a fort in a very young world and trying to see a newborn dorf live long enough to die of old age.

I'm taking bets on how long they'll last.
Where are you embarking? How do you plan to defend yourselves against various threats? What are your industries planned to be like? Are you plotting megaprojects of any sort? How many forgotten beasts, titans, megabeasts and semimegabeasts are alive in this world? Details like that are kind of important.

4x4 tropical swamp with a volcano, savage. Titans at 75, megabeasts at 150, semimegabeasts at 300. Jack of all trades when it comes to industry. Not sure about megaprojects just yet. One month of training per yer for non-military dorfs (rotated so it doesn't grind industry to a halt), plus roughly 15% of the population as dedicated soldiers. No weapon traps. Concentric circles underground channeled out and protected by bridges. fortifications.

I'm planning on following 5 different dorfs of about the same age (any under 12 as soon as I have 5). One miner, one scholar, one soldier, one farmer, and one hunter.
I give him 50. 75, tops.

In any event, to my pleasant surprise it only took a season to fill up the magma casting chamber. Let's hope the cooling goes faster this time too! Also, the trees didn't burn to cinders when their bases were submerged in magma. WTF?

OH ARMOK, THEY'VE RUINED IT, THE TREES HAVE RUINED IT, I'M GOINGTO HAVE TO CHANNEL OUT THIS LAYER OF OBSIDIAN WHEN IT'S DONE, CUT DOWN THE TREES AND CAST IT AGAIN. FUCK. Well, I've worked at it this long, what's another few in-game years?

What did they do?

Phobia of water is also a common symptom as I understand it. This cat has been going on for "the past year" which is a long time for an animal that is constantly dehydrated because its drooling everywhere and afraid to drink anything. It is also apparently lovable as hell, which implies its not insane and trying to murder anything that looks at it.

My bet would be an infection in its gums/jaw resulting in the drooling. That's pretty common for cats, and what prompted us to have Petri put down recently.

Phobia of water is also a symptom in humans. That symptom may be why he is dehydrated. Insanity is only one set of symptoms. You cat seems to have the other set.

One of the family cats who has more-or-less self tamed in the past year has gotten calm enough to join people on their beds. Sadly, he also does not appear to understand the term "personal space" which is bad for two reasons.

First, he is rather grabby. As in, "you scratch me so I must preform industrial-scale acupuncture on you".
Second, he has some form of illness or something that causes him to drool a fair amount (noone seems to know what it is and we cant ask the local vet because they want to kill him off for some reason, and no reliable access to vehicles to ask other vets) And as my mother is A) a christian scientist and B) rather cheap, aswell as being the only person who will drive about who has time to drive about, oh, and quite possibly insane to a degree... well, vehicular access is unlikley to increase for a while...

That is because drooling and personality changes are two signs of rabies.
http://m.petmd.com/cat/conditions/neurological/c_ct_rabies

The drooling is caused by the paralytic form. He/she cant hold tbeir moth shut anymore, so they drool. Get it to a cet, and ask a doctor if scratches count as exposure. NOW.

Yep once we get around 10. Everyone has been added to their lists. Also, as of right now you can no longer sign up as a judge.

Edit: yeah, let's all stick with ASCII, it's just like you said, some tilesets make certain features look better than others, and we want to keep things as even as possible for each entry.

Can we SUBMIT in ascii? I hate playing with it, and use a tileset. I can just as well remove it well enough. I also have to set my pop cap kinda low, around 40 or 50 dwarves. Is this a problem?
