DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Opportunity Strikes!

Thanks. After equipping all that shiney armor, I got chased by a bunch of goblins into a river, which froze two turns after I got in. How unlucky.

So, this is my second game of Adventurer, and I'm doing... okay. Things took a turn for the better when I entered a town filled with dozens of Hoary Marmots. I have no idea what they are, but they seemed to not like me being there. They threw some things at me, but missed. I noticed I couldn't find any humans in this human town, and that the shops were empty... So I stole all the armor from the nearest shop and booked it in fear of retaliation. I got out of the town and traveled to the next without incident.

Now that I've stolen from that town, I assume I can't go there anymore. But why weren't there any NPC's there? Were those Marmots attacking them? If time passes, and the humans in that town die, can I go loot it? Will other human towns attack me for stealing from another town?

Edit:Removed another question I was gonna ask, figured it out.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Gobbos at my doorstep!

I set one Siege mechanic to build and fire the bolts. First one missed by about 2-3 squares, second one killed 4 out of the 3 goblins. Hot Damn. I got busy at that point with something else, and when I checked back a few minutes later, they were all gone. Ballista FTW!

I like the idea of digging a ramp from a room full of traps. Just didn't want to lose any dwarves.

Quite amusing, I think I'll try that. Thanks for the help, I'll let you know how it goes. :P

What's the range on ballistas? I was thinking about building one out of the xbow gobbo's range, and just taking my sweet time throwing sharpened logs at them.

It's somewhere on my map. Have yet to find it. I kinda forgot (whoops) where it was exactly from the embark screen (using regional prospector), so I'd have to go look for it. Even if I find it, it's gonna be around 4-10 levels below the gobbos, and I've never used pumps yet, so I'm not sure how I'd go about getting it up there. I'm digging mostly in obsidian, granite, and silty clay. I've got some copper and a small bit of aluminum. The caravan is due soon.

DF Gameplay Questions / Gobbos at my doorstep!
« on: June 08, 2008, 11:02:00 pm »
Well, not exactly. With forethought, I built a channel in front of a few areas I believed my first siege would come from. Luckily, I was correct in my thinking, and now there is 1 goblin crossbowmen and 6 goblin spearmen stuck on a small ledge, surrounded by the level edge, a wall, a cliff, and a channel. This is the first time I've had my fort survive to my liking to this point, so I've never done combat before. I had one of my new immigrants with novice marksmen skill draft up, and sent him to fire across the channel. He hit the gobbo crossbowmen a few times, and then promptly died from return fire. They are just milling about over there, I think their AI is busted. None of my dwarves have any military training, I have yet to build a barracks, and I have no idea how I should go about killing these guys.

I have 2 crossbows, a steel battleaxe, and around 55 bolts. I could go into melee with them by digging through to the wall they are trapped by, or I could do something with the xbows. Any help?

Edit: It's not a siege, sorry, it's an ambush. Only have about 30 dwarves.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: First Possesion. :(

I quit that fortress yesterday. I've only been playing for about 4 days, and I keep starting over due to doing something wrong, or I just don't like how the fort's going. I'm really picky. I'm on Fort #12 now, so far so good.

Sorry about not telling you guys what happened. I lock him in there for about 2 sleep cycles... and then he finished it. I have no idea exactly what happened. He didn't have access to anything but wood and rock, so who knows.

I guess so, seeing as how it's going to be a mechanism. Thanks for the help, and wish me luck ><.

I'd be more than happy to let the little guy grind a pokemon into a mechanism. Sounds painful. But seriously, I get the feeling that that is the name of the legendary item, but it isn't telling me what he needs. Any help would eb appreciated.

One of my newly-joined immigrants has claimed my mechanic's workshop. He is possessed, and "keeps muttering zegagsal...". He hasn't left the workshop to get any materials yet. What the hell is a Zegagsal? Is that dwarven for something? It's not a name of any creature on my map. Could it be the name of the legendary item? If it is, how do I expand what he's saying to see what he needs?

Thanks. Another quick question, when I'm lookg at my stocks, and an item is listed as having ##?, does that mean I don't know quite how many I have?

Many thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

Okay, so this is my first real game. I've been reading the wiki all week, and I think I'm finally ready to start playing... but the wiki's down. Panic sets in. Hopefully I can get a few answers for these before I hit the sack:

I'm just starting to mine out a storage room, and I need the rocks removed from here to make space. How can I designate to remove "these" certain rocks from this room only and move them to a stockpile, and not just move every freakin' rock from miles around to a stockpile?

With the wiki down, I'm lost as to what I do first, really. Which workshops should I set up first? Should I start building beds for all the dwarves, or doors, or what? About how long IRL does it take for the seasons to change? About when should I expect the first wave of immigrants to arrive?

If I could just get like the first 10 things I should do to get my bases grounded, I'll be your BFF. Thanks.

edit: Can wood rot outside?
