DF Gameplay Questions / Cut clear glass?
« on: March 29, 2009, 07:28:41 am »
I've never bothered with clear glass before because it seemed like such a hassle to make.

However, since a caravan showed up with pearlash, I thought I'd make some.

I'm wondering what I can do with raw clear glass, as it does not show up to cut in the jeweler's workshop like raw green glass does.

The raw clear glass is not forbidden and is currently in a bin in the gem stockpile along with raw green glass (which I can cut), and all the other rough gems.

DF Bug Reports / Re: Can't plant Blade Weeds
« on: March 28, 2009, 10:13:04 am »

You have to buy some quarry bush leaves from the caravan and mill them as well; buying the seeds is not enough.

I would assume it's because the seeds are of a plant the farmers are not familiar with; once you have had the plant they grow into and have procured seeds from it, they have a better idea of what the seeds are for and how to care for the plants.

I'll try that; however, I was able to grow sweet pods from seeds bought from the same caravan, even though I only bought the seeds and not the actual plant.

I assume I am experiencing the same bug, as i cannot grow quarry bushes even though I have the seeds (rock nuts), they are not forbidden and I have an underground farm that can grow all other underground crops.

I am playing a mod so I did not have the option of taking underground crops on embark, and bought them from a caravan.

DF Gameplay Questions / Effects of a missing eye
« on: March 26, 2009, 08:05:16 am »
One of my soldiers lost an eye in a battle; I am wondering what effect this will have on his combat abilities. (assuming he recovers).

He is a melee fighter (sword I think,) but was already unable to spar due to a spine injury.

As far as  I know, giving them [BABYSNATCHER]  will make them behave like goblins do in vanilla DF, ie steal children, ambush and later siege, while removing [INTELLIGENT] and adding [CAN_CIV] and [CAN_LEARN] will make them hostile to everyone, and start sieging straight away.

Except everybody knows that dwarfs cook beer at 3600 for 3 minutes

New suggestion: magma kitchens! :o

DF Suggestions / More autosave options
« on: March 22, 2009, 08:46:24 am »
Ok, well I don't know if everyone has a similar experience to me, but I find the game crashes fairly frequently, seemingly at random, and the option of more frequent autosaves would be nice.

Obviously I can get around this with frequent manual saves, but this is easy to forget, especially when you are in the middle of a complex digging designation at the same time as fighting a siege, managing nobles' mandates and trying to get the right stuff for a moody dwarf.

At present, the most frequent autosave option is seasonal, but I don't think it could be very hard to change this to monthly.

What would be even better would be a real-time based option, eg autosave every 30 minutes etc, so that if you spend a long time deciding/designating stuff  but not much game time passes, the autosave has a chance to catch it.

It might be because they are tasked for hauling to a stockpile, so they won't be available for other things that use them until they have been hauled.

If you turn all the rocks into blocks first, it will build up the skill of your mason.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: I hate glaciers.
« on: March 21, 2009, 12:16:42 pm »
I'm just gonna add that with the zombie mod, starting as humans means no farming of any kind :o

I guess this would be because there's no soil on a glacier.

If you brought enough food to survive til a military caravan arrives, and then  can get past all the zombies, you should be able to get some seeds for underground farming.

on embark I had a meat called < meat> that was worth 0 points, and that when I embarked with it, it instantly blew up.

Sounds like the kind of meat dwarves would love.

I like the name 'Mirthfulspirals'.

Maybe in a future version of DF a mirthful spiral could be like the opposite of a tantrum spiral, except all your dwarves eventually die laughing.

DF Gameplay Questions / War dog not being buried
« on: March 20, 2009, 03:07:55 am »
After a recent attack, both a war dog and a normal (untrained dog) were killed.

While the untrained dog was buried in a coffin, the corpse of the war dog was left on a refuse stockpile, eventually rotting and causing its owner another unhappy thought (forced to endure the decay of a pet.)

There were coffins available, set to 'allow pet burial', dwarves were allowed to gather all types of refuse from outdoors, had access to the refuse stockpile and the coffins, and plenty of idle dwarves set to hauling.

Even when I un-designated the refuse stockpile where it was lying, a dwarf just came and hauled the corpse to another refuse stockpile and did not put it in a coffin.

Is this known behaviour in 40d (war dogs not getting buried?) as I'm sure in earlier versions they were buried like other pets.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Burning artifacts?
« on: March 19, 2009, 09:03:00 am »
Maybe they will burn, but the temperature of a normal fire with wood and cloth burning is not hot enough to ignite them.

Maybe try putting them in a steel bin, then dropping that into magma; there's a thread about doing that with coal, so maybe try with artifacts...

Actually, in my current fort I have an artifact made of bituminous coal, but no magma, so I can't experiment with that.
