DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Hostage Situation
« on: November 29, 2008, 09:03:46 am »
Alright, I've got a fey mooder here and the items she needs is wood and blocks. I've got a few of both but they aren't the right ones. Usually I wouldn't mind locker her in the room and letting her starve to death s a result of her insanity, but she's got a kid with her.

Is there any way this can be resolved "peacefully" (AKA let the mom starve in crazyness and tell the kid major lies his whole life). Or is the kid essentially gonna become another casualty of DF?

Now there's a bit of an Idea: Set up little storage areas for each of the species you capture, and when you get attackers, make it so you can send their respective enemy species out at them, pokemon style.

Maybe a trap door style would work, like keeping them 1 Z level underground with a closed off ramp pointing at the enemy. It's kinda WWII ambush tech-savvy to boot.

You'd need a way to deposit them though, that might get tricky.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What screen set-up do you use?
« on: November 27, 2008, 12:50:09 pm »
I use all three: Still very much a newb and once I learn a control scheme, no matter how bad it is, I stick to it.

Case in point: Smash TV for the SNES. I thought that only Y shot rounds and for some reason I couldn't figure out how to shoot to the left, right, or bottom of the screen. Once I figured out what A, B, and X did, my gameplay GOT WORSE.

This probably won't work in your map but in my mostly desert one I built a lava moat around a large chunk of the surface area. And now that I've managed to build an artificial lake inside the moat the only guys who have to leave the gate are fisherdwarves and woodchoppers. The lava moat may take some time to fill up though (I think it took close to a year and change for mine to get up to 4/7 lava)

Now I've gone and got an idea.

Basically it's a massive tower with blocks on top and means to launch the blocks a good 20-40z levels. I wonder if the limited yet creative physics would allow for something like this* (check at about 1:40 in the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCqO9tTOCQY )

*For the uninitiated: All that weapon is is a long tungsten rod with an engine shot into the ground to create super-earthquake effects.

The concept of a glass city is rather enticing, kinda got the image from the wizard of oz going through my head about that.

Edit: Anybody got a link for the process on how to make glass infrastructure?

Well that solves a lot of my original questions, now 've got two more:

Can somone post a link on artificial construct building tutorials(I've got a sliver of space in some areas of my moat with which to build the wall and at least once I'll need a walkway overhangiing my magma workshops).

And in addition: I've come to the conclusion that I am starting to get sick and tired of looking at sand. So if I decide to build a glass conglomerate will I evetually start to see the end of the sand? or does it just spawn ad infinitium?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What's in store?

Alright, after a bit of a haitus (Fallout 3, EndWar, to name a few), I've come back to DF.

I'm back on my old fort, which I had just completed the lava moat on a desert map (I had the third resident evil film in my head when I thuoght of the initial design, but that's gone to the won now). Now Right before I left to go play my other games I experienced my first siege of goblins. Now it was a smalL group and they got obliterated and routed by a leaving caravan (which then got nailed by the fire imp that had about 10 kills under it's belt by the time the two groups met, I gotta check to see if the goods are still on the map.)

ANYWAY.....

What I'm looking for is some intel on what I'll be facing in the future. Are there airborne assaults? Do they eventually get crossbowmen of their own (provoking a wall around the lava moat with arrow slits, they have those in the game, right?*)

I checked the past logs, but you try typing "siege" in the search bow and see what you find, quite a bit I assure you)

Well, I'm off to play my desert home, any info will be appreciated.

*That's a bonus question if you can give me the correct name if it oes exist, or what the alternative is)

I wa thinking of trying the pump method: if I have the bottom of the lake (where my hle is at) filled then try using a pump fro earlier in the...water pipe, for lack of a better term, I might be ableto trick it was ht I was thinking.

I'm gonna start checking the wiki on pump mechanics (I never really used them so this is a new thing) ut if anyone knows a good thread for this topic that'll help, feel free to drop it in.

Noted, but right now it's a natural 1 z level deep lake with a staircase at the bottom of it. So if I build a 2 z level deep artificial lake it would ...

hold on...if I dug it out so it was 2 z levels deep would the water fill up the lower level (1 level below the water source) then be tricked into filling up the second level (AKA ground level)?

Well that poses a whole new quandry. I can build a well within my city limits but the dried up lake will not be able to fill up due to it being on the same level as my water source (river).

now here's where I ask for people's opinions/knowledge.

Outside of waiting for it to rain in the desert (it's done so once in a year and a half) and hoping that while backed up with a water source beneath it it'll fill/maintain, what other alternatives do I have for (quasi) useful construction?

now mind you: using stairs I've already dug a tunnel down to 2 z levels below the dry lake (3 z levels below the water source and actual lake opening) and have dug a tunnel to directly underneath the river, but have not ascended any z levels to it (2 ramps/stairs up should break into the river, causing everything to flood)

So does anyone have suggestions?

oh, and one more thing: The moat and most of my stuff is located fairly far from the orignal magma vent. Are lava imps/men still likely to head up near my living area (which is near northern tip of my lava moat and farther than lava men/imps normally go without any sort of interruption.

Well that's a pretty straightforward answer. I do however got 1 more question for you and this regards physics.

I'm thinking about putting a well inside my lava moat. The plan is to channel roughly 3 z spaces under the lava moat and then building a channel upward. And in addition, there's a dried up lake within my fortress. If I channel 3 down and then move over to the lake from underneath and then channel up to the lake which is on the same z level as the original river, will the water flow up into it or will it stop at z lvl -3?

DF Gameplay Questions / Does lava evaporate?
« on: October 18, 2008, 03:58:09 pm »
I'm building a lava moat around my desert/mini mountain/start of a river* fortress. The fort itself is gonna be located in the desert portion with a significant lava moat as it's scheme (think RE: Extinction but instead of chainlink fence, lava and drawbridge). Now I've channeled out the entire area to be cordoned off and have a channel digging right into the lava, but after a healthy burst followed by a gradual slowdown as expected while lava regenerates, it's hardly moving at all.

I'm just trying to figure out if lava can evaporate if spread out thin enough. This would explain why I have the occasional sand spot with 1/7 lava spots around it. that get covered up from time to time.

*yes. I have a river in the area, the lava moat and the river end up only 8 tiles away at one point. It would be easy to make a water moat in a desert environment.

Why don't I?

I'll type it again:

((*awsome*LAVA*awsome*)) moat

Well I don't have a goblin civilization but I do have a koblod one with an interesting name: Gobleekus. I don't know what it means but it sounds like goblin and I wanted to point that out.

Now I have already seen a kobold thief in the area, but what about kobold raids? With only a kobold civilization will that be enough to send sieges?
