DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What's with the uber fertility?
« on: April 18, 2012, 08:52:45 pm »
And I don't mean idle dwarves hooking up.

My last migration consisted of 19 children and 10 adults.

considering my population is now 44, things do not look positive.  Unless I get a ton of successful snatchers.

If you decide to use a linked door you can skip the floodgate.

DF Suggestions / Re: Llama and Alpaca?
« on: November 06, 2011, 10:24:15 pm »
I think of lamas a.d alpacas as very different animals.  The difference is like the difference between horses and amules donkey. Also Alpaca wool is far superior.

DF Suggestions / Encased units
« on: October 24, 2011, 07:41:08 am »
I was reading the dwarf checkerboard thread, and long story short the author created a large number of HFS encased in obsidian.

Anyways, It inspirired me to suggest that it could be awesome if blocks of encased units be treated as special.  You can put them on display, or carve a memorial into them.

Other cool stuff could be done in the workshops, crafts, tools, statues etc made from encased blocks could have special properties, especially if the encased are increadibly powerful.  Maybe a statue from encased HFS could "wake" up in the future and walk arround as some freaky HFS Ghost/Golem made out of obsidian, or ice. Cursed stone swords could also be made

Do Goblins run from Magma?

If so you could line a hallway with traps, then release them at one end, with a slow surge of magma behind them. The goblins might run for their hides from the magma through trap after trap, maybe make them wooden training weapon traps to limit damage.  Also you could line up crossbow dwarves a z level or two to add to the gauntlet

DF Gameplay Questions / Need help preventing freezing
« on: January 14, 2011, 01:09:44 am »
I'm in a freezing biome, with an aquifer and cliff. I'ld like to provide drainage for the aquifer off the cliff, but the wate keeps freezing in the pipe.  I've built a couple layers of floors above it, but that hasn't helped :(

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Should pets need to sleep?
« on: January 13, 2011, 06:51:23 pm »
Ummm... last time I looked they do sleep, and eat...

I've had a couple pets die, when they chose to sleep on a rock trap. This was pre DF2010, so this behavure may have changed.

I've also had incidents when I've had pets starve because I ran out of food.

DF General Discussion / Re: Raw Files
« on: September 26, 2010, 09:09:03 am »
I see a couple advantages...

Minor point: There are a freely available parsers for XML that might provide more efficient parsing, and could simplify his code. Granted, Raw file parsing peformance wouldn't likely be noticable. And I doubt Toady's had to touch his parsing code in years.

3. The real benefit would be that an XML version of the raws would be much more readable. Not only in structure, but also most text editors built for writing XML provide text formatting, that make it easy to identify tags, and values.

I would imagine it's based on .txt files so that players can edit things as they like.
Why not XML for the hardcoded stuff, then?

XML is plain text ;)

For some reason when I run .49 I'm getting an error about missing Llamas... I converted my save... I'll try a new fort to be safe though.

Hey probably stupid question but... why isn't Toady using XML for the RAWs?
