DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Barrels?

Copper, lead, and zinc, make great barrels too, I regularly make barrels out of gold, I just make sure to leave enought for the occational demand or mood.

I haven't been able to embark with turtles in an 2010 fort yet... I'll just mod Shells into my cave lobsters.  They should have them anyway.  Granted Turtle and mussel shells are stronger IRL.

The trick is to have atleast 2+ food stock piles. One for stuff that needs barrels, one for stuff that doesn't.

I usually use the following stockpiles

1 Just booze(and the occational extract) normal/Max barrel settings
1 Prepared food stock piles Max Barrel usage set to 0
1 Milling stock pile 0 Max barrels and the closest stockpile to your quern/mill(s) I don't like to mill flour so this lets me put all my dye producing plants, etc near the implements of grinding.
1 "raw Foods" stock pile for everything else. I don't bother with barrels here but you may want to as this stockpile will be the most susceptable to rot. I've never seen any rot issues.

I wasn't thinking of queues for specific dwarfs so much as a queue of jobs that dwarf is functionally able to perform(based on labout preferences and location) And then from there be able to prioritize based on several sorting methods... Distance to job site, skill in job, or some sort of customized job ranking.

DF Suggestions / Customizable Construction Alerts!
« on: June 08, 2010, 07:00:14 am »
I did a quick search, so I think this is new...

It would be awesome if every construction had an alerts setting (accessable when viewing the construction with the W key).

Every Construction would have a list of available alerts that could be turned on.

A Wall may just be something simple like "... is destroyed" while workshops could include item quality messages "... Masterpiece created", and Traps, "... Captured xxx" Each alert could be set to silent, log, or pause.

More creative alerts :
... used last material(or about to)
... created large gem
... Out of Ammo (think traps)
... Hostile near by
... Taken over
... Party commencing
... has become master Wrestler

etc

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: My first reclaim in 2010

I would have to play with it, but I think getting "exposed" to the surface changes some hidden flag that results in it being considered an open cave or something.  I've since found other cave sections @ the site including the thing that raised my archecture value.  No mud there either.  Although I'm not sure if the cave systems are connected or indipendent.

I got my earliest ambush ever in 2010... 20 Hammer and pike goblins partway into year 2.  My entire population of dwarves was 13. 1 servicable soldier. no armor, no defenses.  It was awesom.

1. VM's actually have very little overhead.  IF you do it right. remember a VM doesn't neccessarily virtualize a full OS environment.

2. Virtulization is no gimmick.  In my office we've cut the number of physical servers in half, which has dramatically reduced power consumption costs.  It also gives us incredible amounts of flexability when it comes to server management.  If one of our applications is under powered we can dedicate more processors/ram to it. Need  a server for testing? You can have virtual server online in minutes, without buying hardware.  Have a server go down? The others can pick up the slack with no interruption in service. Also Application Virtualization is pretty awesome too. You can make almost anyapplication available to any user you want. Throw it on a file server give the user's rights and a link done.  This is great when you version limitations, and need version X of an application for a specific use but want other versions for other tasks.

If you can run it in it's own virtual machine you can get a slight performance boost.

This may sound counter productive but some VM software can bounce threads to free processors more effeciently than your OS.
