I generally have 3 5x5 farms.
Farm 1 Plump Helmet's
Farm 2 Cave Wheat
Farm 3 Dimple Cup/Pigtails

Plus I generally slaughter any extra livestock I've got and will regularly cook anything that doesn't have a shell.  I've made a couple attempts to make goblins Edible, but so far no luck.

As far as the "Archimedes death-ray" goes (just to play 'Devil's Advocate' for a moment): Were they testing to set the hulls of the boats on fire? Or just the sails/rigging/etc.? It seems to me that certain sails (made from dry reeds? cloth?) might be easier to set on fire than heavy, damp wooden hulls.

And a much easier target, for that matter.

Please bring on the satonic advocation!

Hull, but they had it nice and tarred up in period fashion... plus Sails do get we and I do not have any data on ignition tempetures of humans and goblins[edit... that might be in the raw's I'll have to check]

At the current stage DF architecture isn't precise enough to build a true parabolic curve even at a largesize... even then It would be more fun to explode invading goblins than cook a fine roast Didn't mythbusters bust the archimedes deathray? I vaguely remember seeing them getting something to work, but the scale wasn't reasonable or something....

Purusing my Legends I found 4-5 Cyclops, each with atleast 80 kills, and still wondering arround... I'm lucky if I find one dragon with more than 10 kills ???

I hate to be the one to Say IT: but this borders on the GNOMELY, not the Dwarvenly  :o.
That being said, some one needs to mod in Gnomes as the "Other Dwarven Race" haha. Err...oh and while you are at it, mod in Gully Dwarves  ;)

Gotta love Gully Dwarf Book Keepers... You'll have 2 of everything, unless their legendary in which case you might have as much as 5.

Keeps accidently browsing the stone section of the stock screen priceless.

This is almost inspiring me to build a tower jutting out from a sheer cliff... Parrallel to the ground instead of perpendicular to it.

Reccomendations:

1. In addition to setting [BLACK_SPACE:] to no.
Graphic Tilesets are designed arround 16x16 sprites, and I believe the standard tileset is 12x12... so for maximum "prettiness" use the native sprite size. So to deturmine your grid size, divide your window size by your tilesize and round down. For example using a 16x16 tilesize: and a 1280x 1024 window, you should use 80x64 grid.  Caveat I found some graphic glictches that were resolved by dropping my height  down to 60.

2.  I found that a width of 64 worked just fine on my laptop(max resolution 1024x768), despite the init files claims of 80 being the minimum..

You should check out the Site with everything thread, I've found the GCS and troglodytes to be taking down my champions +5 on a regular basis(to be fair I haven't started making metal armor yet)

I'm finding the concept of craters really interesting for world gen purposes...

a roundish depression, (2-3 z-levels deep, maybe rising a 1-2 z-levels from the surrounding area.)

and if you mine the area out, you can find some iron or maybe something more *special*?

I'ld rather set up a dance hall, then when musicians play idle dwarves will come and dance! dance! dance!

Dancing can be skill, and will boost agility and strength.

Legendary Dancers could cross train to the military.

Also Legendary musicians could interupt battles and compel every one to dance! 

Bronze collossus cancels ripping recruit to scraps.  Bronze collossus does the mashed plump helmet
