DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What shouldn't be eaten?

Lol, guys, I was being sarcastic. There, I changed my signature to the one I use on every forum. A bit harsh, but almost necessary seeing how my fingers tend to accidentally ignite forum threads

Eh, there's ways to make a post look sarcastic by changing the wording, but in your example, it didn't leave much room to be interpreted as sarcasm. In fact, I'm not entirely sure it was; but I'm willing to take your word for it.

Anyway, I've never seen a carrot flinch. And I've cut a lot of them. Also, I've never seen grass try to get out from under my foot. Some people need to stop taking teh 8cid.

Godwin.

'Twas a bad analogy, but we'll let it slide. Try not to do it again.

Just to make this post relevant:

Ethics kinda go out the window when you play a video game. It's part of the fun, really. It's sort of a given that, were you confronted with a similar situation in real life, you would act differently.

Putting it in perspective (and to quote G-Flex himself): killing kittens in Dwarf Fortress isn't really unethical as long as you realize that you shouldn't actually DO that in real life.

Huh... I love it so far and I'm still on the title screen.

Seriously, this has been really well thought-out and designed. And the Final Fantasy-esque music makes me think it can only get better from here. I don't think I've ever seen a better title screen, not even back in the glory days of Final Fantasy itself. And having played most of those, it's a pretty high praise coming from me.

Also, most Roguelikes are ridiculously unfair. Comes with the territory, for some reason. They also all have a learning curve comparable to Mount Everest.

Also, the people who read failblog are complete and utter fucktards, judging from the average intelligence level of the comments just on that page alone.

Yes, they're so bad that it merits the use of the word fucktard. In fact, it merits the use of that word twice.

Meanwhile, I'ma go eat mah kittehz in gravy.

DF General Discussion / Re: You know you've been playing too much DF when...
« on: September 10, 2008, 10:25:19 pm »
You know you've played too much Dwarf Fortress when:

- You can't figure out why you're not flashing, even though you've been doing nothing but making rock instruments for the last 3 years.

- You consider it normal for a short, bearded man to wear 5 dresses.

- You skin your cat and wonder why you can't make a tunic out of it.

- You post more than 3 ideas in this thread

- You consider soap useless for anything other than a construction material.

- You find yourself walking over the same patch of grass to try and find out if there's useful stone underneath.

- You go into a crystal shop and find yourself more knowledgeable than the staff there.

- You see hematite in aforementioned crystal shop and wonder how many +Steel short swords+ you could make from it.

- You see elves in a fantasy story and think, "No! Don't trust them! THEY'RE GONNA EATCHU!"

- You look at a river and wish you had your +<*Copper Pick*>+ so you could divert it into a reservoir for a well, so that you can drink from it without fear of carp.

- You avoid toilets for fear that their U-bend may cause severe flooding.

- You get a small gash and drag yourself to bed, hoping that someone will bring you a bucket of water.

- You wish you could change your current job description, but it doesn't end in man.

- You sit at a workbench and scream "I must have rough gems! I must have metal bars! I must have leather!"

- You feel a strange urge every now and again to drag your best friend off to the Butcher's Shop and make a masterpiece out of his remains.

- You see road kill and immediately set to work turning it into clothing and bolts.

That's all I can think of for now.

Surprised nobody mentioned Iter Vehemens Ad Necem (IVAN, or "Violent road to death"). I know a few IVANers who have admitted to playing DF a lot.

Development is dead, but damn it's fun. You may need to compile it from source to run it on Mac, but apparently it works.

Download link:
http://ivan.sourceforge.net/download.html

Also, the community is here (the old forums succumbed to spambots):
http://www.attnam.com/

Also, the best unofficial fork so far would have to be LIVAN, however unfortunately it still doesn't have magic (a goal of the original developers, but they never got around to it). It's usually up the top of the IVAN Variants forum.

EDIT: Oh, wait... if rickvoid were here he might have mentioned it. Heh.

Other Games / Re: Spore
« on: September 10, 2008, 08:54:00 pm »
If something is disappointing, we must just be looking at it the wrong way?

Say you were promised a hundred dollars, but instead you got ten rupee.  What other way is there to look at it?

I wasn't saying that you were wrong because you hated Spore. There was, I thought, an implied Mileage May Vary. I was merely stating that perhaps, if you approached Spore from a different angle - for example, what the game actually is, rather than what you wanted it to be - then you might find it somewhat more enjoyable. You may not have noticed the trend, but many people posting in this thread who liked Spore have basically said that it's not as great as everyone made out, but it's got some entertainment value, if only for a few days.

Anyway, that's my opinion. In case this gets misinterpreted again, YMMV. Now I'm off to play Spore.

'Tis a shame you're not using C++. Only because you could then steal Toady's randomiser code (from Battle Champs)...

Err, not that I'm saying it's a good idea or anything...

You're looking at Spore from entirely the wrong viewpoint, methinks. It's not supposed to be a SimEverything, it's supposed to be something completely different from all his other Sim games. On this point, at least, it's a success.

I mean, it's definitely got those cute little moments that you remember from The Sims, and some of the twisted humour that always tends to get around in a Will Wright/Maxis game; but apart from that, it's trying to be something entirely different, and it is. In its own adorable, quirky little way, it's quite fun.

But then, I watched Tomb Raider and thought it was awesome.

I thought tool the first time I saw it, but there is an overwhelming argument that it is actually twat.

Also, prepare for unforseen consequences.

Yes, that's the LHC.

EDIT, it's unforseen. Stupid G-Man using strange words. There's no such thing as a forseen consequence.

Or, perhaps, rather than believing the bullshit and hype surrounding Spore for the past 3 years, Gamespot at least (8.8 is a bit excessive) have taken the time to look at Spore as like a secret project that only just got released with no notice or anything. Therefore, they have a more objective viewpoint, and rather than expecting something and being let down, they expect nothing and get Spore

I think you really need to step away from Spore to realise its merits. That said, I'd give it about a 7.5.

Also, this game seems to have divided gamers. This is a very bad thing. Please, for the sake of the Gaming Gods, let's find some common ground on this?

Excerpt from the journal of Makrond, c.1065

It's all over the fort; even bedridden as I am I cannot escape the news. Major Nil '----' Daycovering has left, [a small splotch of blood lies here] -imself against the dreaded Olsmo, the Master of Death.

Believe it or not, I once had an experience with Olsmo. But, perhaps this story is better left for another time... when I in less pain, perhaps.

OOC: you might not get it, but I sorta want to give the impression that Makrond, far from being stupid as such, thinks slowly and is rather over eager. It's a dangerous combination. Given time to think, he's quite deep. :P

DF General Discussion / Re: Why is the development so slow?
« on: September 07, 2008, 06:08:51 am »

Answer me this please: Why do you only want the people willing to devote hours and hours of time into reading instructions and learning all the ASCII symbols being able to play this game?

I'm sorry, I had to pick on this, because it's badly worded. It's because those are the only kind of people who can actually play this game. It's not some Dora the Explorer colouring book; if you want to play it, you need to invest time into learning how.

Now, to respond to your intent, rather than what you actually said. Dwarf Fortress, whether it had a nice interface or not, would still be a very complex and deep game. I've heard a lot of people saying the interface might turn off new players, yet they never seem to realise that it could well be the complexity of the game itself, rather than any cumbersomeness of the interface, that drives potential new players away.

The point is, DF isn't an easy game to learn. No amount of interface tweaking would change that; it would merely make tasks faster and simpler for those of us who already know how the game works. The simple fact is, unless you're the kind of person who will trawl through the entire Wiki to get a feel for the game, DF isn't an appealing game.

You know, I get the feeling a lot of people here haven't spent much time following other indie games. I find your complaints rather amusing because it's something I've learned to deal with by following the progress of other, similarly ambitious projects. Some of them actually succeed, by the way. DF is shaping up to be one of the successes; indeed, it already is, however it has so much more potential.
