General Discussion / 3D Star Wars
« on: August 05, 2008, 05:21:10 pm »
I don't know if anyone has seen the previews (or indeed the movie... Australia tends to be behind on these things) for LucasFilms' newest addition to the saga, Clone Wars. Apparently it's fully 3D. Anyway, I just wanted to vent a few problems with it, and here seemed like an interesting place to do it.

Firstly, it's been done before!!!!! I've watched Genndy Tartakovsky's version on Cartoon Network so many times I actually almost got tired of it.

Second, not only have I not seen a single mention of this fact anywhere in the paper, but George Lucas himself doesn't mention it in his interview.

Thirdly, not only has the premise been copied, but seemingly also the art style, because the characters look (even though they're 3D CGI) suspiciously similar to Tartakovsky's rather unique art style.

Phew, that feels better. Questions? Comments? Flames? I'll read them all  :D

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: who need sieges when this happens
« on: August 02, 2008, 11:25:01 pm »
Yeah, getting a second ambush while half your fort is failing to fend off the first is really, really... fun. Fortunately my military managed to get their butts into gear and dealt with the problem.

Buying out an entire caravan for the first time ever with a massive surplus of (narrow cave spider silk <item>) is quite satisfying.

Yes, you will get artifacts, just far less than you would in a proper underground fort.

Just make a ton of stuff to trade with people. Every 200 or so items, your artifact limit goes up by one.

Then you have a ~48% chance of getting an artifact over the next month. So you should get one every season until you reach the limit.

And I've heard the game overall is even worse than Oblivion.  :D

So it all kind of balances out in the end.

For example, I recently had an adventurer with a halberd. He was my most successful to date. In fact, he's still alive somewhere in my world; I'm waiting for him to siege my fort (well, he was a human and a member of a civ that hates mine). Don't think it's going to happen though.

Eh, I don't mind Oblivion.

I like Morrowind so much better, but (IMO) if it wasn't for the fact that Oblivion had such a hard act to follow, it probably would be considered a decent game. As it is, it still won Game of the Year. From where, nobody knows, but they still got it.

In fact, sometimes, when I get sick of Morrowind's archery/combat, i fire up a quick session of Oblivion and fulfil my action-oriented urges.

DF Suggestions / Re: Exploding Ballista bolts? Do want!
« on: August 02, 2008, 06:23:30 am »
Meh, explosions are less about 'burn' and more about 'violent expansion of gas'. The actual burning is more or less ancillary. Awesome, but not a vital part of 'boom'.

Liquid fire would still be fun to fire in a hollow-point ballista bolt.

Ooh, imagine paradoxically changing history by wiping out all Dwarven civilisations...

On a more serious note, even being a spectator in a massive historical war would be awesome.

Indeed, in fact firing downwards from battlements at a fairly close range is about your best chance of making a hole through plate armour, not counting deflection angles or anything like that.. Of course, it's still not guaranteed.

With chain mail, you have about a 60/40 chance of the arrow bouncing off harmlessly/breaking a link. Then there's a reasonable chance it will pierce flesh (without quilted/leather armour underneath).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Goblin caravan!?
« on: August 02, 2008, 03:48:03 am »
From what I've heard, yes, the [SNATCHER] tag makes races behave the way goblins used to (i.e. a siege comes every year) but I can't remember if it actually still makes snatchers.

That's like asking why they sterilise the needles before lethal injections.

Somebody, somewhere, knows the answer. But damned if anyone cares.

Because you're only editing existing races, no.

If you were adding new races, yes.

Dwarf Companion had an explanation with it somewhere, and also had a counter that showed when the next artifact *could* happen; it was then up to the game (or the InstaMood button) whether or not a mood happened.

I believe it's a factor of time, as well as manufactured goods and mined space. So if you don't mine anything out, you should still (eventually) get an artifact or two.

Also it's up to the Random Number God to decide, even once you are due for an artifact, whether you get one or not. So if you're not on good terms with Her (personally I think the RNG is female... my opinion only), now would be a good time to sacrifice those goats.

Hooray! I'm a hazard to myself and those around me!  ;D

Now, if I could be a hazard to people who aren't even anywhere near me, I'd be ecstatic.

Mind you, I'm surprised I wasn't sleeping or attending a party or something.

Also, Stravitch seems to be just an exaggerated typical male: food, alcohol and sex all neatly wrapped in a parcel of violence.
