I meant tick-skip. Literally, do algorithms less often.

It's why there were quotation marks around it. A bit hard to understand, I know. It's why I prefer face-to-face communication over forums, but there you go.

Carbon burns. Carbon is the only thing in organic chemistry that burns. Simple as that. Trees, coal, people, vodka... it's all carbon.

No carbon = no burning.

This is a piece of magnesium being ignited. Are you going to tell me that that's not a fire, because it's not carbon?

I knew someone would say this...

in organic chemistry

Bleah, I must have missed a large part of the discussion... I didn't realise we were igniting steel...

I'm going to slink away quietly.  ;D

Wait, I thought more experience = less deaths, or does this only apply to sparring?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Maybe this is a dumb question but

Or you could manually forbid all items of that type except for the sone you specifically want encrusted.

Or, make a dump zone right next to the workshop, dump the item in question, 'd'esignate=>re'c'laim it, then put the job up.

There's billions of ways you can do it, it's all up to how much you want to micromanage.

While I think it's still not a good idea, some of you seem to have misinterpreted the OP...

(Or not, but this is how I interpreted the idea)

It's not a case of making tasks take fewer ticks, but more a case of introducing 'frame-skip'.

This would be simple at a limit of 100 FPS, because with frame-skip, if you're running at 50 FPS, the game would 'skip' every second frame, allowing the game to look like it's running at normal speed, if in a somewhat jerky manner. If you were running at 1 FPS, the game would display 1 frame, skip the other 99, then display another frame. True, this would result in 'teleporting' dwarves, but hey, you save a bit of time.

After a while it would get annoying, as all frame-skip does, but maybe if you consistently get 60 FPS or so, it would be useful as an optional feature.

Carbon burns. Carbon is the only thing in organic chemistry that burns. Simple as that. Trees, coal, people, vodka... it's all carbon.

No carbon = no burning.

Oxygen does not 'burn', it is merely used to sustain the burning. Hydrogen does not 'burn', it merely facilitates the burning of the carbon in the organic compound (which always contains hydrogen). Carbon burns.

2H2 + O2 = H2O

... The hell?! That's not combustion, nor is it burning. All that does is make sound due to the energy being produced by the reaction. Combustion needs an ignition source, and carbon, otherwise you don't get fire.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Funniest Names

That is a great story. I love DF, if only because of stories like this.

The goblin probably threw the bolt at you. As for the pike... I wouldn't have a clue.

I once had a really funny desert name, but I can't for the life of me think what it was...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Would you consider this cheating?
« on: June 30, 2008, 05:58:50 am »
Definitely not cheating. There are many other things out there that are far more cheatalicious.

Teleporting him into some magma, for example.

Hooray for easy rectangles!!!  ;D ;D ;D

My longest-running fortress is currently in 1060. I also have 5 other fortresses that are in varying years. Most of them are for cheating/modding purposes, but now that I have a setup I'm content with, I'm considering cleaning them all up and having just the one world from now on.

I tend to spend either 2 hours (if I'm doing other things) or 8 hours (solid session) on DF. That's on weekends, at least.

I usually solve this problem by pressing 'p' and then pressing '*' a few times.

Reserve barrels is an extremely useful feature.

It's not necessarily on the bottom level. In fact, you should only look one or two z-levels below the surface.

Also, if you want to reveal an entire level, you can just designate the whole thing for digging. Much faster. However, this is not recommended as it can prevent the trigger which allows you to build magma forges/furnaces, as well as the hidden fun stuff that comes with adamantine.

Tilde! IT'S CALLED FRIKKIN' TILDE!!!~~~

Ahem...

@Brian: You might need to look down a z-level or two... from memory, magma that reaches the surface gets instantly revealed on embark, but if there's nothing on the surface you may need to do some exploratory mining. Once you hit the wall, though, you'll know.

If all else fails, there's always reveal.

Lol you people are the first people I have heard that listen to metal and use computers

You should come to my TAFE (like college, but even easier) class sometime. Basically, we have a cross-section of teenage society.

We have an emo; many, many metal freaks; a sprinkling of 'cultured' people; nerds; jocks; we even had a cheerleader-type, but she had too many other commitments and was rarely there.

Computers aren't limited to people like me anymore.  ;D

Fish have clavicles?!

Stupid fish, they should know waterfalls are dangerous! I mean, they didn't have barrels or anything. How did they expect to survive?
