The Disgaea port is up for $15, worth getting?
  • Apparently some people are still having controller issues? They're working on a fix for that right now, though
I had problems with the controller only going in four directions during battles. It works fine with the beta in my case, they might have fixed it now as well. Not sure.

Emmm... am I imagining things or is the air warfare just crazy slaughter? It seems after the initial DoW, hundreds of planes get shot down in a matter of hours. While historically, there could be days without major aerial contact between opponents since finding the enemy in the air was pretty difficult. (Ignoring Battle of Britain and other major air campaigns.)
Haven't played the game yet but considering the initial hostilities between Germany and the Soviets it doesn't seem that far away. Not saying it should be the norm though and if it keeps going on that rate...

Distant worlds is a decently complex real time 4x and might fit as well. Has state (player controlled) and private (uncontrollable) economies for each empire and pirate group. As well as many resources and sometimes tourists or slaves that need to be hauled around by ships etc. Has a very simulation-y feel to the economy.

Very much looking forward to being able to select materials as well, might cut down some of stockpile management. I haven't been bothered much by not being able to select the other stuff but I certainly won't complain about it. Will be fun ordering weird statues and engravings, only negative part being I can't blame the dorfs anymore I guess.

here's the dev quote about counters.

Quote
"we'll have counters. Not because we need them for this time the sprite interface is going to contain just as much information but because some players will want to keep the boardgame feel. I personally used counters in hoi3 but I wont in hoi4 I think. Adding traditional counters is going to be one of the last things we do during beta so dont expect to see them for a long time."
Many thanks, I wasn't able to find the quote.

The main thing about the OOB system from HOI3 is, most people who played hoi1 and 2 hated it, because it made managing large scale armies like the Reds nearly impossible on any meaningful amount. This new system seems like it will allow for higher level planning without having to hope the AI does the lower level stuff correctly, and also doesn't mean you have to micro 600+ units across the entire Barbarossa front.
I did enjoy the first two games in the series as well, probably spent a fair bit more time playing and modding them than I should have. But something that the OOB and cooperating generals managed to do was make it feel like you created an army, rather than a pile of divisions.
I totally agree that the OOB system had its issues. But I think scrapping it was unnecessary when it could be improved in many ways and have a more interesting and impactful role, becoming more of a target for the enemy. Which I think is the problem with the previous solution, it offered mostly just a malus if you didn't do it. It should be something more interesting. It does take a few minutes to set up the OOB, but I hardly consider that much of a problem as it saves a bit of time later on in finding things (which could be due to not using the ai for controlling units).
I don't really see the problem with the AI messing things up as I generally don't use it for anything anyway. And really, I find if you have the ai controlling the army there's sadly not that much left to do in the game. If anything I think the new system will cause some really awkward moments where the ai of your units will screw you over (I haven't read up on this recently but basically the ai is supposed to complete simple objectives you give it if I understand correctly, correct me if I'm wrong).
They have actually said they have counters. It's on the wiki and linkeds to a thread where the devs confirmed thy will be an optional feature. From what I have seen from the diarys and especially the video is definitely not dumbed down.
I wasn't aware of this. Unless it was the one from some time ago where the little icons along the soldier model were the counters rather than the replacement for the model which people asking for them are generally looking for.
I Looked on the wiki and found some nato counter icons so I guess they might be in there one way or another. Although my guess is that they would just replace the other icons which wouldn't help that much. The problem here being if anyone wonders that the soldier model works for Europa universalis and Crusader kings where there's not 600+ units to micro + enemies + allies present to try to keep track of. (The video linked in the opening post has units firing in the wrong direction etc. which doesn't help quickly making out what is going on). Who would have thought camouflaged men don't stick out very well in a similarly coloured background?

Here is a few screens of a random save I had lying around showing the problems the 3d models had in HoI3, I think the little counter accompaniying the model in HoI4 is going to help with knowing the size but things like movement might be difficult. It looks a bit different compared to HoI4, but I hope my fears will come across somewhat. Models also don't show units out of supply in HoI3 as seen here.
Spoiler: "model - terrain" (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: "model - political" (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: "counter- political" (click to show/hide)

Due to the game being modded (black ice being the mod here) there's custom counters for many of the German and Russian divisions so the Romanian ones might be the more interesting to identify. That said using models instead of counters could also cause some trouble introducing new units or custom divisions like in this case to HoI4 and be able to tell them apart.

I'm very split over what to think of this game. On the one hand I really enjoyed (and still play) HoI3. And some things which I liked about the game such as command structures and the large number of generals seems to be going out the door. I also really don't like the general look of the game so far, it seems really cluttered or something. Much preferred the flat political map with terrain in HoI3 for instance and the UI looks meh. I'm not particularly fond of the counters being thrown out in favor of the little models of soldiers (Selling those DLC's were probably hard when few used them) that gets kind of irritating to keep track of (based on how they were in HoI3). The research trees look a bit dull and arbitrary so far as well, although I guess it was true in the previous game as well until mods got around to improve them.

That said there's a few changes I really like such as various sizes for rivers or some kind of saner peace negotiations. Not to mention any kind of change to naval combat is likely to be a step forward. An updated engine will most likely be a big help to modders.

It will also be interesting to see how the new industry, equipment, manpower and resource systems will work.

I'm looking forward to the game in general but currently not planning to buy it until it has been out for some time. While I'm not expecting it to be as much of a trainwreck as HoI3 on release I have been kind of disappointed in all their more recent releases I've bought early.

Maybe a scroll of flying would be enough to reduce the weight (10-20% or something). But if I recall correctly they also reduce the items damage, defense etc. a bit when used on equipment.

No need for the other guild 2's if you get renaissance in my opinion as well, there are some things in the previous ones that are missing but they've added more and it's slightly less buggy.

DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress w/ Voice Attack?

It seems like a lot of work for very little, if not negative improvement to be honest in the case of dwarf fortress. That said it's an interesting idea.

Contributed, i find it strange that there were no mention of tilesets or external tools like dwarf therapist although they may not be strictly related to playstyle.

Planetary Annihilation is 80% off on Steam.  Lots of hype and enthusiasm over the beta, tanked in actual reviews.  Maybe they're patching it and updating it?
It was also on bundlestars along with a bunch of other things for about the same price. I think it should still be.

Trine maybe? Has possibility of co-op on one machine too. Although that would mean one person needs a controller or such and mouse is useful.

Are human dwarf races playable without bugs ?
Dwarf runs great as far as I could tell. Only problems I had was unrelated crashes from vanilla df when building over trees.

If you know in advance (before worldgen) what you want to play you can also set playable races in the GUI civilization page (it's the "fort" column).
